Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings were deposited on to silicon, glass and metal substrates, using an rf-plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (rf-PECVD) process. The resultant film properties were evaluated in respect of material and interfacial property control, based on bias voltage variation and the introduction of inert (He and Ar) and reactive (N2) diluting gases in a CH4 plasma. The analysis techniques used to assess the material properties of the films included AFM, EELS, RBS/ERDA, spectroscopic, electrical, stress, microhardness, and adhesion. These were correlated to the tribological performance of the coatings using wear measurements. The most important observation is that He dilution (>90%) promotes enhanced adhesion with respect to all substrate material studies. Coatings typically exhibit a microhardness of the order of 10-20 GPa in films 0.1DLC) coatings were deposited on to silicon, glass and metal substrates, using an rf-plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (rf-PECVD) process. Coatings typically exhibit a microhardness of the order of 10-20 GPa in films 0.1 < d < 2 μm thick, with associated electrical resistivity in the range 108 < ρ < 1012 Ω·cm, coefficient of friction <0.1 and surface RMS roughness as low as 2 A. The results are discussed with respect to surface pre-treatment, ion surface bombardment, interfacial reactivity and changes in plasma gas breakdown processes.

A TiNi/diamond-like-carbon (DLC) microcage for biological application has been designed, fabricated and characterized. A compressively stressed DLC film with TiNi pattern on top lifts the fingers upwards once they are released from the substrate, and the microcage can be closed through shape memory effect of top TiNi film with temperature below 80°C. Further heating above 100°C, the gradual opening of the microcage can be obtained due to thermal bimorph effect. The biocompatibility of both the TiNi and DLC films has been proved using a cell-culture method.

A variety of hydrogenated and non-hydrogenated amorphous carbon thin films have been characterized by means of grazing-incidence X-ray reflectivity (XRR) to give information about their density, thickness, surface roughness and layering. We used XRR to validate the density of ta-C, ta-C:H and a-C:H films derived from the valence plasmon in electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements, up to 3.26 and 2.39 g/cm3 for ta-C and ta-C:H, respectively. By comparing XRR and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) data, we have been able for the first time to fit a common electron effective mass of m*/me = 0.87 for all amorphous carbons and diamond, validating the `quasi-free' electron approach to density from valence plasmon energy. While hydrogenated films are found to be substantially uniform in density across the film, ta-C films grown by the filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) show a multilayer structure. However, ta-C films grown with an S-bend filter show a high uniformity and only a slight dependence on the substrate bias of both sp3 and layering.

DLC films with different thicknesses (from 100 nm to 1.9 μm) were deposited using sputtering of graphite target in pure argon atmosphere without substrate heating. Film microstructures (sp2/sp3 ratio) and mechanical properties (modulus, hardness, stress) were characterized as a function of film thickness. A thin layer of aluminum about 60 nm was deposited on the DLC film surface. Laser micromachining of Al/DLC layer was performed to form microcantilever structures, which were released using a reactive ion etching system with SF6 plasma. Due to the intrinsic stress in DLC films and bimorph Al/DLC structure, the microcantilevers bent up with different curvatures. For DLC film of 100 nm thick, the cantilever even formed microtubes. The relationship between the bimorph beam bending and DLC film properties (such as stress, modulus, etc.) were discussed in details. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel normally closed microcage has been fabricated and characterized. This device was made from a highly compressively stressed diamond like carbon (DLC) and electroplated Ni bimorph structure. The large stress in the DLC causes the bimorph layer to curve once it is released from the substrate. The radius of curvature is in the range of 18 - 50μm, and can be controlled by varying the DLC and the Ni thicknesses. The devices can be operated in a pulsed mode current with low operation temperature, and can be opened by ∼60μm laterally with a power consumption of only ∼16mW. © 2004 IEEE.

Multi-finger, normally-closed microgrippers made from a bilayer of a metal and diamond-like carbon (DLC) or a trilayer of a polymer, metal and DLC have been analysed, simulated and fabricated. Temperatures of ∼700 K are necessary to open Ni/DLC bimorph structures. Microgrippers made from an SU8/DLC bilayer or SU8/Al/DLC trilayer have also been fabricated, and fully closed microcages with diameters of ∑40 μm have been obtained. Using SU8 reduces the opening temperature of these devices to only ∼400 K.

Thin films of diamond-like carbon (DLC) have been deposited using a novel photon-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (photo-CVD) method. This low energy method may be a way to produce better interfaces in electronic devices by reducing damage due to ion bombardment. Methane requires high energy photons for photolysis to take place and these are not transmitted in most photo-CVD methods owing to the presence of a window between the lamp and the deposition environment. In our photo-CVD system there is no window and all the high energy photons are transmitted into the reaction gas. Initial work has proved promising and this paper presents recent results. Films have been characterized by measuring electron energy loss spectra, by ellipsometry and by fabricating and testing diode structures. Results indicate that the films are of a largely amorphous nature and are semiconducting. Diode structures have on/off current ratios of up to 106.
