Simultaneous recording from multiple single neurones presents many technical difficulties. However, obtaining such data has many advantages, which make it highly worthwhile to overcome the technical problems. This report describes methods which we have developed to permit recordings in awake behaving monkeys using the 'Eckhorn' 16 electrode microdrive. Structural magnetic resonance images are collected to guide electrode placement. Head fixation is achieved using a specially designed headpiece, modified for the multiple electrode approach, and access to the cortex is provided via a novel recording chamber. Growth of scar tissue over the exposed dura mater is reduced using an anti-mitotic compound. Control of the microdrive is achieved by a computerised system which permits several experimenters to move different electrodes simultaneously, considerably reducing the load on an individual operator. Neurones are identified as pyramidal tract neurones by antidromic stimulation through chronically implanted electrodes; stimulus control is integrated into the computerised system. Finally, analysis of multiple single unit recordings requires accurate methods to correct for non-stationarity in unit firing. A novel technique for such correction is discussed.

The advent of nanotechnology has revolutionised our ability to engineer electrode interfaces. These are particularly attractive to measure biopotentials, and to study the nervous system. In this work, we demonstrate enhanced in vitro recording of neuronal activity using electrodes decorated with carbon nanosheets (CNSs). This material comprises of vertically aligned, free standing conductive sheets of only a few graphene layers with a high surfacearea- to-volume ratio, which makes them an interesting material for biomedical electrodes. Further, compared to carbon nanotubes, CNSs can be synthesised without the need for metallic catalysts like Ni, Co or Fe, thereby reducing potential cytotoxicity risks. Electrochemical measurements show a five times higher charge storage capacity, and an almost ten times higher double layer capacitance as compared to TiN. In vitro experiments were performed by culturing primary hippocampal neurons from mice on micropatterned electrodes. Neurophysiological recordings exhibited high signal-to-noise ratios of 6.4, which is a twofold improvement over standard TiN electrodes under the same conditions. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. We report here the patterning of primary rat neurons and astrocytes from the postnatal hippocampus on ultra-thin parylene-C deposited on a silicon dioxide substrate, following observations of neuronal, astrocytic and nuclear coverage on strips of different lengths, widths and thicknesses. Neuronal and glial growth was characterized 'on', 'adjacent to' and 'away from' the parylene strips. In addition, the article reports how the same material combination can be used to isolate single cells along thin tracks of parylene-C. This is demonstrated with a series of high magnification images of the experimental observations for varying parylene strip widths and thicknesses. Thus, the findings demonstrate the possibility to culture cells on ultra-thin layers of parylene-C and localize single cells on thin strips. Such work is of interest and significance to the Neuroengineering and Multi-Electrode Array (MEA) communities, as it provides an alternative insulating material in the fabrication of embedded micro-electrodes, which can be used to facilitate single cell stimulation and recording in capacitive coupling mode. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.

There is increasing adoption of computer-based tools to support the product development process. Tolls include computer-aided design, computer-aided manufacture, systems engineering and product data management systems. The fact that companies choose to invest in tools might be regarded as evidence that tools, in aggregate, are perceived to possess business value through their application to engineering activities. Yet the ways in which value accrues from tool technology are poorly understood.

This report records the proceedings of an international workshop during which some novel approaches to improving our understanding of this problem of tool valuation were presented and debated. The value of methods and processes were also discussed. The workshop brought together British, Dutch, German and Italian researchers. The presenters included speakers from industry and academia (the University of Cambridge, the University of Magdeburg and the Politechnico de Torino)

The work presented showed great variety. Research methods include case studies, questionnaires, statistical analysis, semi-structured interviews, deduction, inductive reasoning, the recording of anecdotes and analogies. The presentations drew on financial investment theory, the industrial experience of workshop participants, discussions with students developing tools, modern economic theories and speculation on the effects of company capabilities.

A computer can assist the process of design by analogy by recording past designs. The experience these represent could be much wider than that of designers using the system, who therefore need to identify potential cases of interest. If the computer assists with this lookup, the designers can concentrate on the more interesting aspect of extracting and using the ideas which are found. However, as the knowledge base grows it becomes ever harder to find relevant cases using a keyword indexing scheme without knowing precisely what to look for. Therefore a more flexible searching system is needed.

If a similarity measure can be defined for the features of the designs, then it is possible to match and cluster them. Using a simple measure like co-occurrence of features within a particular case would allow this to happen without human intervention, which is tedious and time- consuming. Any knowledge that is acquired about how features are related to each other will be very shallow: it is not intended as a cognitive model for how humans understand, learn, or retrieve information, but more an attempt to make effective, efficient use of the information available. The question remains of whether such shallow knowledge is sufficient for the task.

A system to retrieve information from a large database is described. It uses co-occurrences to relate keywords to each other, and then extends search queries with similar words. This seems to make relevant material more accessible, providing hope that this retrieval technique can be applied to a broader knowledge base.

Highly sensitive biosensor for detection of acetylcholine (ACh) and competitive acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor, eserine, is investigated. Peculiar microelectronic configuration of an ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET) in addition to a right choice of the pH-transducing nanolayers allows recording a response of the enzyme-modified ISFET (EnFET) to a wide range of ACh concentrations. We demonstrate a remarkable improvement of at least three orders of magnitude in dose response to ACh. Described bioelectronic system reveals clear response, when the catalytic activity of the immobilized AChE is inhibited in a reversible manner by eserine, competitive inhibitor of AChE. ©2007 IEEE.

Copyright 2014 by the author(s). We present a nonparametric prior over reversible Markov chains. We use completely random measures, specifically gamma processes, to construct a countably infinite graph with weighted edges. By enforcing symmetry to make the edges undirected we define a prior over random walks on graphs that results in a reversible Markov chain. The resulting prior over infinite transition matrices is closely related to the hierarchical Dirichlet process but enforces reversibility. A reinforcement scheme has recently been proposed with similar properties, but the de Finetti measure is not well characterised. We take the alternative approach of explicitly constructing the mixing measure, which allows more straightforward and efficient inference at the cost of no longer having a closed form predictive distribution. We use our process to construct a reversible infinite HMM which we apply to two real datasets, one from epigenomics and one ion channel recording.
