The polycrystalline manganite La0.75Sr0.25MnO 3 prepared by an alternative carbonate precipitation route reveals the rhombohedral perovskite structure. Magnetization isotherms measured up to 2 T are used to determine Curie temperature of 332 K by means of Arrott plot. Maximum of magnetic entropy change is found at Curie temperature. The relative cooling power equal to 64 J/kg for 1.5 T magnetic field, is superior as compared to the manganite with the same chemical composition from the solgel method. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. The band structure of the Bi layered perovskite SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) has been calculated by the tight binding method. We find both the valence and conduction band edges to consist of states primarily derived from the Bi-O layer rather than the perovskite Sr-Ta-O block. The valence band maximum arises from O p and some Bi s states, while the conduction band minimum consists of Bi p states, with a band gap of 5.1 eV. It is argued that the Bi-O layers largely control the electronic response of SBT while the ferroelectric response originates from the perovskite Sr-Ta-O block. Bi and Ta centered traps are calculated to be shallow, which may account in part for the excellent fatigue properties of SBT.

The band structure of the layered perovskite SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) was calculated by tight binding and the valence band density of states was measured by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. We find both the valence and conduction band edges to consist of states primarily derived from the Bi-O layer rather than the perovskite Sr-Ta-O blocks. The valence band maximum arises from O p and some Bi s states, while the conduction band minimum consists of Bi p states, with a wide band gap of 5.1 eV. It is argued that the Bi-O layers largely control the electronic response whereas the ferroelectric response originates mainly from the perovskite Sr-Ta-O block. Bi and Ta centered traps are calculated to be shallow, which may account in part for its excellent fatigue properties. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Ba1.6Ca2.3Y1.1Fe5O13 is an Fe3+ oxide adopting a complex perovskite superstructure, which is an ordered intergrowth between the Ca2Fe2O5 and YBa2Fe3O8 structures featuring octahedral, square pyramidal, and tetrahedral B sites and three distinct A site environments. The distribution of A site cations was evaluated by combined neutron and X-ray powder diffraction. Consistent with the Fe3+ charge state, the material is an antiferromagnetic insulator with a Néel temperature of 480-485 °C and has a relatively low d.c. conductivity of 2.06 S cm-1 at 700 °C. The observed area specific resistance in symmetrical cell cathodes with the samarium-doped ceria electrolyte is 0.87 Ω cm2 at 700 °C, consistent with the square pyramidal Fe3+ layer favoring oxide ion formation and mobility in the oxygen reduction reaction. Density functional theory calculations reveal factors favoring the observed cation ordering and its influence on the electronic structure, in particular the frontier occupied and unoccupied electronic states. © 2010 American Chemical Society.
