We discuss the development of amorphous oxide semiconductor technology for optical sensor applications. In particular, we discuss the challenges of detecting visible wavelengths using this family of materials, which are known to be optically transparent due to their relatively large bandgap energy. One of the main issues with amorphous oxide semiconductors (AOS) is the ionization of the oxygen vacancies (VO) under illumination. While this can be beneficial in terms of optical absorption and high photoconductive gain, it can give rise to persistent photoconductivity (PPC). We will present techniques to overcome the PPC, and discuss how to achieve the high photoconductive gain for image sensor applications. © 2012 IEEE.

Tuneable optical sensors have been developed to sense chemical stimuli for a range of applications from bioprocess and environmental monitoring to medical diagnostics. Here, we present a porphyrin-functionalised optical sensor based on a holographic grating. The holographic sensor fulfils two key sensing functions simultaneously: it responds to external stimuli and serves as an optical transducer in the visible region of the spectrum. The sensor was fabricated via a 6 nanosecond-pulsed laser (350 mJ, λ = 532 nm) photochemical patterning process that enabled a facile fabrication. A novel porphyrin derivative was synthesised to function as the crosslinker of a polymer matrix, the light-absorbing material, the component of a diffraction grating, as well as the cation chelating agent in the sensor. The use of this multifunctional porphyrin permitted two-step fabrication of a narrow-band light diffracting photonic sensing structure. The resulting structure can be tuned finely to diffract narrow-band light based on the changes in the fringe spacing within the polymer and the system's overall index of refraction. We show the utility of the sensor by demonstrating its reversible colorimetric tuneability in response to variation in concentrations of organic solvents and metal cations (Cu 2+ and Fe2+) in the visible region of the spectrum (λmax ≈ 520-680 nm) with a response time within 50 s. Porphyrin-functionalised optical sensors offer great promise in fields varying from environmental monitoring to biochemical sensing to printable optical devices. This paper presents a novel platform for the formation of cost-effective PCB-integrated optical waveguide sensors. The sensor design relies on the use of multimode polymer waveguides that can be formed directly on standard PCBs and commercially-available chemical dyes, enabling the integration of all essential sensor components (electronic, photonic, chemical) on low-cost substrates. Moreover, it enables the detection of multiple analytes from a single device by employing waveguide arrays functionalised with different chemical dyes. The devices can be manufactured with conventional methods of the PCB industry, such as solder-reflow processes and pick-and-place assembly techniques. As a proof of principle, a PCB-integrated ammonia gas sensor is fabricated on a FR4 substrate. The sensor operation relies on the change of the optical transmission characteristics of chemically functionalised optical waveguides in the presence of ammonia molecules. The fabrication and assembly of the sensor unit, as well as fundamental simulation and characterisation studies, are presented. The device achieves a sensitivity of approximately 30 ppm and a linear response up to 600 ppm at room temperature. Finally, the potential to detect multiple analytes from a single device is demonstrated using principal-component analysis. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

Reliability of the measuring devices is very important problem. Optical fibre sensors are very efficient. The use of optical fibre sensors for monitoring the physical and chemical parameters has been expanding over resent years. These sensors are applied for monitoring the structural integrity of long, parallel lay synthetic ropes. Such ropes are corrosion free, however, their operational lifetime under cyclic load is not well understood and premature failure can occur due to slippage and breakage of yarns within the rope. The monitoring system has been proposed which is based on acoustic detection of yarn breakage. Monitoring the strain and temperature is performed using the array of fibre gratings distributed along the rope length.

The recent developments in nanotechnology are reviewed, with particular emphasis on its application in microsystem technology where increased reliability is achieved by integrating the sensor and the readout electronics on the same substrate. New applications may be possible using integrated micromechanical clips to connect optic fibers and components in integrated silicon systems. Some of the key developments in enabling technologies are also described, including the control of thin film deposition, nanostructuring to tailor the properties of thin film, silicon micromachining to make sensors, and microclips for the low-cost assembly of integrated optical microsystems.

Two near-ultraviolet (UV) sensors based on solution-grown zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires (NWs) which are only sensitive to photo-excitation at or below 400 nm wavelength have been fabricated and characterized. Both devices keep all processing steps, including nanowire growth, under 100 °C for compatibility with a wide variety of substrates. The first device type uses a single optical lithography step process to allow simultaneous in situ horizontal NW growth from solution and creation of symmetric ohmic contacts to the nanowires. The second device type uses a two-mask optical lithography process to create asymmetric ohmic and Schottky contacts. For the symmetric ohmic contacts, at a voltage bias of 1 V across the device, we observed a 29-fold increase in current in comparison to dark current when the NWs were photo-excited by a 400 nm light-emitting diode (LED) at 0.15 mW cm(-2) with a relaxation time constant (τ) ranging from 50 to 555 s. For the asymmetric ohmic and Schottky contacts under 400 nm excitation, τ is measured between 0.5 and 1.4 s over varying time internals, which is ~2 orders of magnitude faster than the devices using symmetric ohmic contacts.
