Nitrogen can have numerous effects on diamond-like carbon: it can dope, it can form the hypothetical superhard compound C3N4, or it can create fullerene-like bonding structures. We studied amorphous carbon nitrogen films deposited by a filtered cathodic vacuum arc as a function of nitrogen content, ion energy and deposition temperature. The incorporation of nitrogen from 10-2 to 10 at% was measured by secondary ion mass spectrometry and elastic recoil detection analysis and was found to vary slightly sublinearly with N2 partial pressure during deposition. In the doping regime from 0 to about 0.4% N, the conductivity changes while the sp3 content and optical gap remain constant. From 0.4 to approximately 10% N, existing sp2 sites condense into clusters and reduce the band gap. Nitrogen contents over 10% change the bonding from mainly sp3 to mainly sp2. Ion energies between 20 and 250 eV do not greatly modify this behaviour. Deposition at higher temperatures causes a sudden loss of sp3 bonding above about 150 °C. Raman spectroscopy and optical gap data show that existing sp2 sites begin to cluster below this temperature, and the clustering continues above this temperature. This transition is found to vary only weakly with nitrogen addition, for N contents below 10%.

An attempt has been made to prepare a YBa2Cu3O 7-δ (YBCO) thin film doped with ferromagnetic CoFe 2O4. Transmission electron microscopy of the resultant samples shows, however, that Y(Fe, Co)O3 forms as a nanoparticulate dispersion throughout the film in preference to CoFe2O4, leaving the YBCO yttrium deficient. As a consequence, the superconducting properties of the sample are poor, with a self-field critical current density of just 0.25 MA cm-2. Magnetic measurements indicate however that the Y(Fe, Co)O3 content, together with any other residual phases, is also ferromagnetic, and some interesting features are present in the in-field critical current behaviour, including a reduced dependence on applied field and a strong c-axis peak in the angular dependence. The work points the way towards future attempts utilising YFeO3 as an effective ferromagnetic pinning additive for YBCO. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Structural changes induced by the incorporation of nitrogen into ta-C : H films have been studied by Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy and Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy. ta-C:H films have been synthesised using a low pressure Electron Cyclotron Wave Resonance (ECWR) source which provides a plasma beam with a high degree of ionisation and dissociation. Nitrogen was incorporated by adding N2 to the C2H2 plasma used for the deposition of ta-C : H films. The N/C atomic ratio in the films rises rapidly until the N2/C2H2 gas ratio reaches three, and then increases more gradually, while the deposition rate decreases steeply. Chemical sputtering of the forming films and the formation of molecular nitrogen within the films limit the maximum nitrogen content to about N/C = 0.6. For low nitrogen content the films retain their diamond-like properties, however as N/C atomic ratio increases, a polymeric-like material is formed, with >C=N- structures and terminating C=N and NH groups that decrease the connectivity of the network.

The UV-VIS characteristics of carbon ions fabricated by an arch discharge in water or liquid nitrogen show characteristics that are similar to the interstellar absorption feature. Thus, high purity and well separated carbon onion samples prepared by annealing the as-fabricated powder in air at 600°C for 60 showed a constant absorption peak at 4.6 μm-1 with a variable width ranging from 1.2-1.6 μm-1. In addition to the UV-VIS data, the origin of the absorption feature at 4.6 μm-1 in carbon onions can be attributed to the collective excitations of π plasmons.
