When designing vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) for deployment in the urban environment, it is desirable to have a low-cost computational model that allows for modelling the coupled interaction of the turbine with the flowfleld. Such a method is presented in this paper, It combines a variation of the multiple streamtube model with a potential method to model flowfleld interactions. A method referred to as "streamtube surgery" is used to couple the influence of the flowfleld with the performance model of the VAWT. This tool is used to explore the instantaneous and cycle-averaged flowflelds of VAWTs. It can also be used to evaluate the influence on performance of multiple VAWTs in dense arrays or to quantify blockage effects of a VAWT in wind tunnel testing.

The conventional approaches to poverty alleviation in the slums entail a cocktail of interventions in health, education, governance and physical improvements, often stretching the scarce resources far and thin. Driven by the 'poverty' mindset, physical measures such as minimal paving, public water posts and community latrines actually brand the slums apart instead of assimilating them into the urban infrastructure fabric. The concept of Slum Networking proposes comprehensive water and environmental sanitation infrastructure as the central and catalytic leverage for holistic development. At costs less than the conventional 'slum' solutions, it tries to penetrate a high quality urban infrastructure net deeply into the slums to assimilate them into the city rather than lock them in as disadvantaged islands. Further, it transcends resource barriers and 'aid' through innovative partnerships and the latent resource mobilisation potential of the so-called 'poor'. This paper examines Slum Networking as implemented in Sanjaynagar in Ahmedabad, India and compares it with a similar settlement with no interventions in Ahmedabad. It assesses the knock-on impact of physical infrastructure on health, education and poverty. Finally, it evaluates the multiplier effect of physical infrastructure and the partnerships on the subsequent investments by the community in its own shelter and habitat. This paper is concerned with the difficulties in model testing deepwater structures at reasonable scales. An overview of recent research efforts to tackle this challenge is given first, introducing the concept of line truncation. Passive truncation has traditionally been the preferred method by industry; however, these techniques tend to suffer in capturing accurately line dynamic response and so reproducing peak tensions. In an attempt to improve credibility of model test data the proposed truncation procedure sets up the truncated model, based on line dynamic response rather than quasi-static system stiffness. Vibration decay of transverse elastic waves due to fluid drag forces is assessed and it is found that below a certain length criterion, the transverse vibrational characteristics for each line are inertia driven, hence with respect to these motions the truncated model can assume a linear damper whose coefficient depends on the local line properties and vibration frequency. Initially a simplified taut string model is assumed for which the line is submerged in still water, one end fixed at the bottom the other assumed to follow the vessel response, which can be harmonic or random. A dimensional analysis, supported by exact benchmark numerical solutions, has shown that it is possible to produce a general guideline for the truncation length criterion, which is suitable for any kind of line with any top motion. The focus of this paper is to extend this work to a more complex line configuration of a conventional deepwater mooring line and so enhance the generality of the truncation guideline. The paper will close with an example case study of a spread mooring system, applying this method to create an equivalent numerical model at a reduced depth that replicates exactly the static and dynamic characteristics of the full depth system. Toolpath design in spinning is an open ended problem, with a large number of solutions, and remains an art acquired by practice. To be able to specify a toolpath without the need for experimental trials, further understanding of the process mechanics Is required. At the moment, the mechanics of the process Is not completely understood, due to the complex deformation and because long solution times required for accurate numerical modelling of the process Inhibit detailed study. This paper proposes and applies a new approach to modelling the process and aims to contribute to the understanding of process mechanics, In particular with respect to the mechanisms of failure and and to apply this understanding for toolpath design In spinning. A new approach to numerical modelling Is proposed and applied to Investigate the process. The findings suggest that there are two different causes and two different modes of wrinkling In spinning, depending on the stage In the process and direction of roller movement. A simple test Is performed to estimate the limits of wrinkling and provide a guideline for toolpath design In a typical spinning process. The results show that the required toolpath geometry in the early stages of the process is different from that In later stages. © 2011 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA. Weinheim.
