An 80 GSPS photonic ADC system is demonstrated, using broadband MLL and dispersive fibre to form a continuous waveform with time-wavelength mapping, and AWG to channelise. Tests are carried out for RF signals up to 10GHz. © 2005 Optical Society of America.

The propagation of ultrashort pulses in a traveling wave semiconductor amplifier is considered. It is demonstrated that the effective polarization relaxation time, which determines the coherence of the interaction of pulses within the medium, strongly depends on its optical gain. As a result, it is shown that at large optical gains the coherence time can exceed the transverse relaxation time T2 by an order of magnitude, this accounting for the strong femtosecond superradiant pulse generation commonly observed in semiconductor laser structures. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. This paper presents a study which linked demographic variables with barriers affecting the adoption of domestic energy efficiency measures in large UK cities. The aim was to better understand the 'Energy Efficiency Gap' and improve the effectiveness of future energy efficiency initiatives. The data for this study was collected from 198 general population interviews (1.5-10 min) carried out across multiple locations in Manchester and Cardiff. The demographic variables were statistically linked to the identified barriers using a modified chi-square test of association (first order Rao-Scott corrected to compensate for multiple response data), and the effect size was estimated with an odds-ratio test. The results revealed that strong associations exist between demographics and barriers, specifically for the following variables: sex; marital status; education level; type of dwelling; number of occupants in household; residence (rent/own); and location (Manchester/Cardiff). The results and recommendations were aimed at city policy makers, local councils, and members of the construction/retrofit industry who are all working to improve the energy efficiency of the domestic built environment. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

In the face of increasing demand and limited emission reduction opportunities, the steel industry will have to look beyond its process emissions to bear its share of emission reduction targets. One option is to improve material efficiency - reducing the amount of metal required to meet services. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to explore why opportunities to improve material efficiency through upstream measures such as yield improvement and lightweighting might remain underexploited by industry. Established input-output techniques are applied to the GTAP 7 multi-regional input-output model to quantify the incentives for companies in key steel-using sectors (such as property developers and automotive companies) to seek opportunities to improve material efficiency in their upstream supply chains under different short-run carbon price scenarios. Because of the underlying assumptions, the incentives are interpreted as overestimates. The principal result of the paper is that these generous estimates of the incentives for material efficiency caused by a carbon price are offset by the disincentives to material efficiency caused by labour taxes. Reliance on a carbon price alone to deliver material efficiency would therefore be misguided and additional policy interventions to support material efficiency should be considered. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

High-power (more than 500 mW) and high-speed (more than 1 Gbps) tapered lasers at 1060 nm are required in free-space optical communications and (at lower frequencies of around 100 MHz) display applications for frequency doubling to the green. On a 3 mm long tapered laser, we have obtained an open eye diagram at 1 Gbps, together with a high extinction ratio of 11 dB, an optical modulation amplitude of 530 mW, and a high modulation efficiency of 13 W/A. On a 4 mm-long tapered laser, we have obtained an open eye diagram at 700 Mbps, together with a high extinction ratio of 19 dB, a high optical modulation amplitude of 1.6 W, and a very high modulation efficiency of 19 W/A. On a 6 mm-long tapered laser, we have obtained a very high power of 5W CW and a very high static modulation efficiency of 59.8 W/A. © 2011 SPIE.

Heterojunction is an important structure for the development of photovoltaic solar cells. In contrast to homojunction structures, heterojunction solar cells have internal crystalline interfaces, which will reflect part of the incident light, and this has not been considered carefully before though many heterostructure solar cells have been commercialized. This paper discusses the internal reflection for various material systems used for the development of heterostructure-based solar cells. It has been found that the most common heterostructure solar cells have internal reflection less than 2%, while some potential heterojunction solar cells such as ITO/GaAs, ITO/InP, Si/Ge, polymer/semiconductors and oxide semiconductors may have internal reflection as high as 20%. Also it is worse to have a window layer with a lower refractive index than the absorption layer for solar cells. Ignoring this strong internal reflection will lead to severe deterioration and reduction of conversion efficiency; therefore measures have to be taken to minimize or prevent this internal reflection. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
