The detailed understanding of the electronic properties of carbon-based materials requires the determination of their electronic structure and more precisely the calculation of their joint density of states (JDOS) and dielectric constant. Low electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) provides a continuous spectrum which represents all the excitations of the electrons within the material with energies ranging between zero and about 100 eV. Therefore, EELS is potentially more powerful than conventional optical spectroscopy which has an intrinsic upper information limit of about 6 eV due to absorption of light from the optical components of the system or the ambient. However, when analysing EELS data, the extraction of the single scattered data needed for Kramers Kronig calculations is subject to the deconvolution of the zero loss peak from the raw data. This procedure is particularly critical when attempting to study the near-bandgap region of materials with a bandgap below 1.5 eV. In this paper, we have calculated the electronic properties of three widely studied carbon materials; namely amorphous carbon (a-C), tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) and C60 fullerite crystal. The JDOS curve starts from zero for energy values below the bandgap and then starts to rise with a rate depending on whether the material has a direct or an indirect bandgap. Extrapolating a fit to the data immediately above the bandgap in the stronger energy loss region was used to get an accurate value for the bandgap energy and to determine whether the bandgap is direct or indirect in character. Particular problems relating to the extraction of the single scattered data for these materials are also addressed. The ta-C and C60 fullerite materials are found to be direct bandgap-like semiconductors having a bandgaps of 2.63 and 1.59eV, respectively. On the other hand, the electronic structure of a-C was unobtainable because it had such a small bandgap that most of the information is contained in the first 1.2 eV of the spectrum, which is a region removed during the zero loss deconvolution.

We study graphene growth on hafnia (HfO2) nanoparticles by chemical vapour deposition using optical microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. We find that monoclinic HfO2 nanoparticles neither reduce to a metal nor form a carbide while nucleating nanometer domain-sized few layer graphene. Hence we regard this as an interesting non-metallic catalyst model system with the potential to explore graphene growth directly on a (high-k) dielectric. HfO2 nanoparticles coated with few layer graphene by atmospheric pressure CVD with methane and hydrogen at 950 °C. (© 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The behavior of trapped electrons, in a dielectric close to the channel of a silicon SOI-FET, is studied by cryogenic microwave spectroscopy. On-resonance microwave excitation causes one of these trapped electrons to undergo spatial Rabi oscillations between widely separated trap sites. This charge displacement causes a change in the drain current of the transistor, resulting in high quality factor resonances in continuous wave spectroscopy. The potential of this effect for non-classical information processing is investigated through polychromatic single-shot spectroscopy, using on-resonance and difference frequencies. Interaction between different trapped electrons is seen in the post excitation behavior and the possibilities of quantum gate operations are discussed. © The Electrochemical Society.

Femtosecond laser pulses are used in order to induce dielectric breakdown in gaseous mixtures, namely in some reactive air-methane mixtures. The light emitted from the laser induced plasma was analyzed while the main emission features are identified and assigned. From the analysis of the emission spectra, a linear relationship was found to hold between the intensity of some spectral features and methane content. Finally, the use of femtosecond laser induced breakdown as a tool for the in situ determination of the composition of gaseous mixtures (e.g., equivalence ratio) is also discussed. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Characteristics of the Raman spectrum from carbon onions have been identified in terms of the position of the G peak and appearance of the transverse optic phonon peaks. Five new peaks were observed in the low wavenumber region, at about 1100, 861, 700, 450 and 250 cm(-1). The origins of these peaks are discussed in terms of the phonon density of states (PDOS) and phonon dispersion curves of graphite. The curvature of the graphene planes is invoked to explain the relaxation of the Raman selection rules and the appearance of the new peaks. The Raman spectrum of carbon onions is compared with that of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). The strain of graphene planes due to curvature has been estimated analytically and is used to account for the downward shift of the G peak. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
