Here we demonstrate a novel application that employs the ion exchange properties of conducting polymers (CP) to modulate the detection window of a CP based biosensor under electrical stimuli. The detection window can be modulated by electrochemically controlling the degree of swelling of the CP associated with ion transport in and out of the polymer. We show that the modulation in the detection window of a caffeine imprinted polypyrrole biosensor, and by extension other CP based biosensors, can be achieved with this mechanism. Such dynamic modulation in the detection window has great potential for the development of smart biosensors, where the sensitivity of the sensor can be dynamically optimized for a specific test solution.

DNA methylation has two essential roles in plants and animals - defending the genome against transposons and regulating gene expression. Recent experiments in Arabidopsis thaliana have begun to address crucial questions about how DNA methylation is established and maintained. One cardinal insight has been the discovery that DNA methylation can be guided by small RNAs produced through RNA-interference pathways. Plants and mammals use a similar suite of DNA methyltransferases to propagate DNA methylation, but plants have also developed a glycosylase-based mechanism for removing DNA methylation, and there are hints that similar processes function in other organisms.

Our group recently reproduced the water-assisted growth method, so-called "SuperGrowth", of millimeter-thick single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) forests by using C2H4/H2/H2O/Ar reactant gas and Fe/Al2O3, catalyst. In this current work, a parametric study was carried out on both reaction and catalyst conditions. Results revealed that a thin Fe catalyst layer (about 0.5 nm) yielded rapid growth of SWNTs only when supported on Al2O3, and that Al2O3 support enhanced the activity of Fe, Co, and Ni catalysts. The growth window for the rapid SWNT growth was narrow, however. Optimum amount of added H2O increased the SWNT growth rate but further addition of H2O degraded both the SWNT growth rate and quality. Addition of H2 was also essential for rapid SWNT growth, but again, further addition decreased both the SWNT growth rate and quality. Because Al2O3 catalyzes hydrocarbon reforming, Al2O3 support possibly enhances the SWNT growth rate by supplying the carbon source to the catalyst nanoparticles. The origin of the narrow window for rapid SWNT growth is also discussed.

The optimization of a near-circular low-Earth-orbit multispacecraft refueling problem is studied. The refueling sequence, service time, and orbital transfer time are used as design variables, whereas the mean mission completion time and mean propellant consumed by orbital maneuvers are used as design objectives. The J2 term of the Earth's nonspherical gravity perturbation and the constraints of rendezvous time windows are taken into account. A hybridencoding genetic algorithm, which uses normal fitness assignment to find the minimum mean propellant-cost solution and fitness assignment based on the concept of Pareto-optimality to find multi-objective optimal solutions, is presented. The proposed approach is demonstrated for a typical multispacecraft refueling problem. The results show that the proposed approach is effective, and that the J2 perturbation and the time-window constraints have considerable influences on the optimization results. For the problems in which the J2 perturbation is not accounted for, the optimal refueling order can be simply determined as a sequential order or as the order only based on orbitalplane differences. In contrast, for the problems that do consider the J2 perturbation, the optimal solutions obtained have a variety of refueling orders and use the drift of nodes effectively to reduce the propellant cost for eliminating orbital-plane differences. © 2013 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. A power LDMOS on partial silicon on insulator (PSOI) with a variable low-κ dielectric (VLKD) buried layer and a buried p (BP) layer is proposed (VLKD BPSOI). At a low κ value, the electric field strength in the buried dielectric (EI) is enhanced, and a Si window makes the substrate share the vertical voltage drop, leading to a high vertical breakdown voltage (BV). Moreover, three interface field peaks are introduced by the BP, the Si window, and the VLKD, which modulate the fields in the SOI layer, the VLKD layer, and the substrate; consequently, a high BV is obtained. Furthermore, the BP reduces the specific on-resistance (Ron), and the Si window alleviates the self-heating effect (SHE). The BV for VLKD BPSOI is enhanced by 34.5%, and Ron is decreased by 26.6%, compared with those for the conventional PSOI, and VLKD BPSOI also maintains a low SHE. © 2006 IEEE.

Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) single grains have the potential to generate large trapped magnetic fields for a variety of engineering applications, and research on the processing and properties of this material has attracted world-wide interest. In particular, the introduction of flux pinning centres to the large grain microstructure to improve its current density, Jc, and hence trapped field, has been investigated extensively over the past decade. Y 2Ba4CuMOx [Y-2411(M)], where M = Nb, Ta, Mo, W, Ru, Zr, Bi and Ag, has been reported to form particularly effective flux pinning centres in YBCO due primarily to its ability to exist as nano-size inclusions in the superconducting phase matrix. However, the addition of the Y-2411(M) phase to the precursor composition complicates the melt-processing of single grains. We report an investigation of the growth rate of single YBCO grains containing Y-2411(Bi) phase inclusions and Y2O3. The superconducting properties of these large single grains have been measured specifically to investigate the effect of Y2O3 on broadening the growth window of these materials. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Seeded zone-melt recrystallization using a dual electron beam system has been performed on silicon-on-insulator material, which was prepared with single-crystal silicon filling of the seed windows by selective epitaxial growth. The crystal quality has been assessed by a variety of microscopic techniques, and it is shown that single-crystal films 0.5-1.0 μm thick over 1.0 μm of isolating oxide may be prepared by this method. These films have considerably less lateral variation in thickness than standard material, in which the windows are not so filled. The filling method is suitable for both single- and multiple-layer silicon-on-insulator, and gives the advantages of excellent layer uniformity after recrystallization and improved planarity of the whole chip structure. Experiments using various amounts of seed window filling have shown that the lateral variations of silicon film thickness seen in unplanarized material are due to stress relief in the cap oxide when the silicon film is molten, rather than the effect previously postulated in which they were assumed to be due to the contraction of silicon on melting.

Hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin films have been deposited from silane using a novel photo-enhanced decomposition technique. The system comprises a hydrogen discharge lamp contained within the reaction vessel; this unified approach allows high energy photon excitation of the silane molecules without absorption by window materials or the need for mercury sensitisation. The film growth rates (exceeding 4 Angstrom/s) and material properties obtained are comparable to those of films produced by plasma-enhanced CVD techniques. The reduction of energetic charged particles in the film growth region should enable the fabrication of cleaner semiconductor/insulator interfaces in thin-film transistors.

This paper describes results obtained using the modified Kanerva model to perform word recognition in continuous speech after being trained on the multi-speaker Alvey 'Hotel' speech corpus. Theoretical discoveries have recently enabled us to increase the speed of execution of part of the model by two orders of magnitude over that previously reported by Prager & Fallside. The memory required for the operation of the model has been similarly reduced. The recognition accuracy reaches 95% without syntactic constraints when tested on different data from seven trained speakers. Real time simulation of a model with 9,734 active units is now possible in both training and recognition modes using the Alvey PARSIFAL transputer array. The modified Kanerva model is a static network consisting of a fixed nonlinear mapping (location matching) followed by a single layer of conventional adaptive links. A section of preprocessed speech is transformed by the non-linear mapping to a high dimensional representation. From this intermediate representation a simple linear mapping is able to perform complex pattern discrimination to form the output, indicating the nature of the speech features present in the input window.

Thin films of diamond-like carbon (DLC) have been deposited using a novel photon-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (photo-CVD) method. This low energy method may be a way to produce better interfaces in electronic devices by reducing damage due to ion bombardment. Methane requires high energy photons for photolysis to take place and these are not transmitted in most photo-CVD methods owing to the presence of a window between the lamp and the deposition environment. In our photo-CVD system there is no window and all the high energy photons are transmitted into the reaction gas. Initial work has proved promising and this paper presents recent results. Films have been characterized by measuring electron energy loss spectra, by ellipsometry and by fabricating and testing diode structures. Results indicate that the films are of a largely amorphous nature and are semiconducting. Diode structures have on/off current ratios of up to 106.

This paper will review the different U. V. lamp photo-CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) techniques which have been utilized for the production of highly photoconductive hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin films. Most of these require the transmission of U. V. light through a window into the reaction vessel; leading to unwanted U. V. light absorption by the window and the a-Si:H film which tends to form on its inner surface. A deposition system developed in our laboratory will also be described, which circumvents these problems by incorporating a windowless discharge lamp into the reaction vessel.
