The flow field within an unsteady ejector has been investigated using experimental and computational techniques. The experimental results show a peak thrust augmentation of 1.4; numerical simulation gives a value of 1.37. It is shown that the vortex ring dominates the flow field. At optimal thrust augmentation the vortex ring acts like a fluid piston accelerating the fluid inside the ejector. A model is proposed for the operation of unsteady ejectors, based on the vortex ring acting like a fluid piston. Control volume analysis is presented showing that mass entrainment is responsible for thrust augmentation. It is proposed that the spacing of successive vortex rings determines the mass entrainment and therefore thrust augmentation. The efficiency of unsteady ejectors was found to vary between 28% and 32% depending on the L/D ratio of the unsteady jet source. Copyright © 2008 by J H Heffer.

mark Unsteady ejectors can be driven by a wide range of driver jets. These vary from pulse detonation engines, which typically have a long gap between each slug of fluid exiting the detonation tube (mark-space ratios in the range 0.1-0.2) to the exit of a pulsejet where the mean mass flow rate leads to a much shorter gap between slugs (mark-space ratios in the range 2-3). The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of mark-space ratio on the thrust augmentation of an unsteady ejector. Experimental testing was undertaken using a driver jet with a sinusoidal exit velocity profile. The mean value, amplitude and frequency of the velocity profile could be changed allowing the length to diameter ratio of the fluid slugs L/D and the mark-space ratio (the ratio of slug length to the spacing between slugs) L/S to be varied. The setup allowed L/S of the jet to vary from 0.8 to 2.3, while the L/D ratio of the slugs could take any values between 3.5 and 7.5. This paper shows that as the mark-space ratio of the driver jet is increased the thrust augmentation drops. Across the range of mark-space ratios tested, there is shown to be a drop in thrust augmentation of 0.1. The physical cause of this reduction in thrust augmentation is shown to be a decrease in the percentage time over which the ejector entrains ambient fluid. This is the direct result ofthe space between consecutive slugs in the driver jet decreasing. The one dimensional model reported in Heffer et al. [1] is extended to include the effect of varying L/S and is shown to accurately capture the experimentally measured behavior ofthe ejector. A key issue in the fabrication of Terfenol-D 2-2 composites with internal magnetic field biasing is the selection of appropriate constituent materials to obtain high magnetostriction while keeping optimum magnetomechanical properties. The fabrication process is costly and time consuming and, therefore, numerical methods to predict their properties are useful. In this paper, finite element analysis (FEA) of the magnetostriction of such composites has been carried out using the commercial package ABAQUS. It has been shown that composites fabricated using Nd2Fe14B for the permanent magnetic material layers possess the highest internal fields within the Terfenol-D layers, although the overall strain of these composites is limited to approximately 800 × 10-6 due to the high elastic modulus of Nd2Fe14B. Simulations showed that the strain can be enhanced by choosing a different material with a lower elastic modulus for the permanent magnetic layer even though the internal field is lower. The simulations showed that the strain can increase by 12% if the Nd 2Fe14B layer is substituted by SmCo5; by 23% if it is substituted by Sm2Co17; and by 35% if it is substituted by Alnico. © 2008 IEEE.

The electronic and magnetic properties of the transition metal sesqui-oxides Cr(2)O(3), Ti(2)O(3), and Fe(2)O(3) have been calculated using the screened exchange (sX) hybrid density functional. This functional is found to give a band structure, bandgap, and magnetic moment in better agreement with experiment than the local density approximation (LDA) or the LDA+U methods. Ti(2)O(3) is found to be a spin-paired insulator with a bandgap of 0.22 eV in the Ti d orbitals. Cr(2)O(3) in its anti-ferromagnetic phase is an intermediate charge transfer Mott-Hubbard insulator with an indirect bandgap of 3.31 eV. Fe(2)O(3), with anti-ferromagnetic order, is found to be a wide bandgap charge transfer semiconductor with a 2.41 eV gap. Interestingly sX outperforms the HSE functional for the bandgaps of these oxides.

An experimental investigation to identify the source conditions that distinguish finite-volume negatively buoyant fluid projectile behaviour from fountain behaviour in quiescent environments of uniform density is described. Finite-volume releases are governed by their source Froude number Fr D and the aspect ratio L/D of the release, where L denotes the length of the column of fluid dispensed vertically from the nozzle of diameter D. We establish the influence of L/D on the peak rise heights of a release formed by dispensing saline solution into fresh water for 0D<6 and 0D<34. Within these ranges, we determine the source conditions for which a flow may be regarded, in terms of the initial rise height attained, as either finite-volume or continuous flux. The critical aspect ratio (L/D) f, for a given Fr D, which when exceeded no longer influenced release behaviour, led to the determination of Fr D, (L/D) f paired source conditions that give rise to solely Froude-number-dependent, i.e. fountain-like, behaviour. As such, we make the link between finite-volume releases and continuous fountains. The Fr D(L/D) f pairs led us directly to the classification of a Fr D, L/D space from which source conditions giving rise to either negatively buoyant projectiles or fountains may be readily identified. The variation of (L/D) f with Fr D corresponds closely to established fountain regimes of very weak, weak and forced fountains. Moreover, our results indicate that the formation or otherwise of a primary vortex, as fluid is ejected, has a profound influence on the length of the dispensed fluid column that is necessary to achieve rise heights equal to fountain rise heights. © 2012 Cambridge University Press.

This work examines the basic feasibility of the net-zero-balance TRU multi-recycling concept in which trivalent lanthanide fission products (Ln(III) ) are not separated from trivalent actinides (An(III)). The TRU together with Eu and Gd isotopes are recycled in a standard PWR using Combined Non-Fertile and UO2 (CONFU) assembly design. The assembly assumes a heterogeneous structure where about 20% of U02 fuel pins on the assembly periphery are replaced with Inert Matrix Fuel (IMF) pins hosting TRU, Gd, and Eu generated in the previous cycles. The 2-D neutronic analysis show potential feasibility of Ln / An recycling in PWR using CONFU assembly. Recycling of Ln reduces the fuel cycle length by about 30 effective full power days (EFPD) and TRU destruction efficiency by about 5%. Power peaking factors and reactivity feedback coefficients are close to those of CONFU assembly without Ln recycling.

Delivering acceptable low end torque and good transient response is a significant challenge for all turbocharged engines. As downsized gasoline engines and Diesel engines make up a larger and larger proportion of the light-duty engines entering the market, the issue takes on greater significance. Several schemes have been proposed to improve torque response in highly boosted engines, including the use of electrical assist turbochargers and compressed air assist. In this paper we examine these methods with respect to their effectiveness in improving transient response and their relative performance along with some of the practical considerations for real world application. Results shown in this paper are from 1-D simulations using the Ricardo WAVE software package. The simulation model is based on a production light-duty Diesel engine modified to allow the introduction of compressed air at various points in the air-path as well as direct torque application to the turbocharger shaft (such as might be available from an electrical assist turbocharger). Whilst the 1-D simulation software provides a suitable environment for investigating the various boost assistance options, the overall air path performance also depends upon the control system. The introduction of boost assistance complicates the control in two significant ways: the system may run into constraints (such as compressor surge) that are not encountered in normal operation and the assistance introduces an additional control input. Production engine controllers are usually based on gain-scheduled PID control and extensive calibration. For this study, the non-linear nature of the engine together with the multiple configurations considered and the slower than real-time execution of 1-D models makes such an approach time consuming. Moreover, an ad-hoc approach would leave some doubt as to the fairness of comparisons between the different boost-assist options. Model Predictive Control has been shown to offer a convenient approach to controlling the 1-D simulations in a close to optimal manner for a typical Diesel VGT-EGR air path configuration. We show that the same technique can be applied to all the considered assistance methods with only modest calibration effort required. Copyright © 2012 SAE International.

The behaviour of cast-iron tunnel segments used in London Underground tunnels was investigated using the 3-D finite element (FE) method. A numerical model of the structural details of cast-iron segmental joints such as bolts, panel and flanges was developed and its performance was validated against a set of full-scale tests. Using the verified model, the influence of structural features such as caulking groove and bolt pretension was examined for both rotational and shear loading conditions. Since such detailed modelling of bolts increases the computational time when a full scale segmental tunnel is analysed, it is proposed to replace the bolt model to a set of spring models. The parameters for the bolt-spring models, which consider the geometry and material properties of the bolt, are proposed. The performance of the combined bolt-spring and solid segmental models are evaluated against a more conventional shell-spring model. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
