In the present study, we report the hydrogen content estimation of the hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films using visible Raman spectroscopy in a fast and nondestructive way. Hydrogenated diamondlike carbon films were deposited by the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition, plasma beam source, and integrated distributed electron cyclotron resonance techniques. Methane and acetylene were used as source gases resulting in different hydrogen content and sp2/sp3 fraction. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopic ellipsometry (1.5-5 eV) as well as UV-Vis spectroscopy were provided with the optical band gap (Tauc gap). The sp2/sp3 fraction and the hydrogen content were independently estimated by electron energy loss spectroscopy and elastic recoil detection analysis-Rutherford back scattering, respectively. The Raman spectra that were acquired in the visible region using the 488 nm line shows the superposition of Raman features on a photoluminescence (PL) background. The direct relationship of the sp2 content and the optical band gap has been confirmed. The difference in the PL background for samples of the same optical band gap (sp2 content) and different hydrogen content was demonstrated and an empirical relationship between the visible Raman spectra PL background slope and the corresponding hydrogen content was extracted. © 2004 American Institute of Physics.

The UV-VIS characteristics of carbon ions fabricated by an arch discharge in water or liquid nitrogen show characteristics that are similar to the interstellar absorption feature. Thus, high purity and well separated carbon onion samples prepared by annealing the as-fabricated powder in air at 600°C for 60 showed a constant absorption peak at 4.6 μm-1 with a variable width ranging from 1.2-1.6 μm-1. In addition to the UV-VIS data, the origin of the absorption feature at 4.6 μm-1 in carbon onions can be attributed to the collective excitations of π plasmons.

Self-assembled structures capable of mediating electron transfer are an attractive scientific and technological goal. Therefore, systematic variants of SH3-Cytochrome b(562) fusion proteins were designed to make amyloid fibers displaying heme-b(562) electron transfer complexes. TEM and AFM data show that fiber morphology responds systematically to placement of b(562) within the fusion proteins. UV-vis spectroscopy shows that, for the fusion proteins under test, only half the fiber-borne b(562) binds heme with high affinity. Cofactor binding also improves the AFM imaging properties and changes the fiber morphology through changes in cytochrome conformation. Systematic observations and measurements of fiber geometry suggest that longitudinal registry of subfilaments within the fiber, mediated by the interaction and conformation of the displayed proteins and their interaction with surfaces, gives rise to the observed morphologies, including defects and kinks. Of most interest is the role of small molecule modulation of fiber structure and mechanical stability. A minimum complexity model is proposed to capture and explain the fiber morphology in the light of these results. Understanding the complex interplay between these factors will enable a fiber design that supports longitudinal electron transfer.

a-C:H films deposited from methane and helium mixture in a capacitively coupled rf plasma were found to show photoluminescence (PL) with peak intensities at energies far above the Taue gap of these films. Apart from the PL the films were investigated with respect to their IR and UV/VIS absorption properties as well as their Raman spectra were examined. The ultraviolet (UV) and blue luminescence from hard a-C:H thin films are explained by incorporation of polycyclic hydrocarbons from gas-phase reactions in the methane helium plasma into the film.

A solution processed aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposite thin film has been developed offering simultaneously high optical transparency and low electrical resistivity, with a conductivity figure of merit (σDC/σopt) of ~75-better than PEDOT:PSS and many graphene derivatives. The reduction in sheet resistance of thin films of pristine MWCNTs is attributed to an increase in the conduction pathways within the sol-gel derived AZO matrix and reduced inter-MWCNT contact resistance. Films have been extensively characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), photoluminescence (PL), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. A synthetic strategy for fabricating a dense amine functionalized self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on hydroxylated surfaces is presented. The assembly steps are monitored by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared- attenuated total reflection, atomic force microscopy, variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry, UV-vis surface spectroscopy, contact angle wettability, and contact potential difference measurements. The method applies alkylbromide-trichlorosilane for the fabrication of the SAM followed by surface transformation of the bromine moiety to amine by a two-step procedure: S(N)2 reaction that introduces the hidden amine, phthalimide, followed by the removal of the protecting group and exposing the free amine. The use of phthalimide moiety in the process enabled monitoring the substitution reaction rate on the surface (by absorption spectroscopy) and showed first-order kinetics. The simplicity of the process, nonharsh reagents, and short reaction time allow the use of such SAMs in molecular nanoelectronics applications, where complete control of the used SAM is needed. The different molecular dipole of each step of the process, which is verified by DFT calculations, supports the use of these SAMs as means to tune the electronic properties of semiconductors and for better synergism between SAMs and standard microelectronics processes and devices.
