We report the first hybrid mode-locking of a monolithic two-section multiple quantum well InGaN based laser diode. This device, with a length of 1.5 mm, has a 50-μm-long absorber section located at the back facet and generates a continuous stable 28.6 GHz pulse train with an average output power of 9.4 mW at an emission wavelength of 422 nm. Under hybrid mode-locking, the pulse width reduces to 4 ps, the peak power increases to 72 mW, and the microwave linewidth reduces by 13 dB to <500 kHz. We also observe the passive mode-locking with pulse width and peak power of 8 ps and 37 mW, respectively. © 1989-2012 IEEE.

This paper presents an investigation of the mode-locking performance of a two-section external-cavity mode-locked InGaAs quantum-dot laser diode, focusing on repetition rate, pulse duration and pulse energy. The lowest repetition rate to-date of any passively mode-locked semiconductor laser diode is demonstrated (310 MHz) and a restriction on the pulse energy (at 0.4 pJ) for the shortest pulse durations is identified. Fundamental mode-locking from 310 MHz to 1.1 GHz was investigated, and harmonic mode-locking was achieved up to a repetition rate of 4.4 GHz. Fourier transform limited subpicosecond pulse generation was realized through implementation of an intra-cavity glass etalon, and pulse durations from 930fs to 8.3ps were demonstrated for a repetition rate of 1 GHz. For all investigations, mode-locking with the shortest pulse durations yielded constant pulse energies of ∼0.4 pJ, revealing an independence of the pulse energy on all the mode-locking parameters investigated (cavity configuration, driving conditions, pulse duration, repetition rate, and output power). © 2011 IEEE.

Dicke superradiance from a two-section violet GaN/InGaN semiconductor laser diode is demonstrated for the first time. In the superradiance regime, optical pulses with peak powers in excess of 2.8 W and durations as short as 1.4 ps are generated at repetition rates of up to 10 MHz at the emission wavelength of 408 nm. The properties of superradiant pulse generation from these GaN/InGaN laser diodes are very similar to those reported for infrared AlGaAs/GaAs laser diodes.

Detached-eddy simulation of transonic flow past a thin section of a fan blade has been carried out. The inflow Mach number is 1.03, and a bow shock forms upstream of the blade. The shock (corresponding to an adjacent blade) impinges on the suction-side boundary layer which causes separation and rapid transition to turbulence. The boundary layer later re-attaches near the trailing edge. The pressure-side boundary layer transitions near the leading edge and remains attached. Mean surface pressure shows basic agreement with a steady RANS calculation; strong shock motion in the DES is the major cause of discrepancy. Surface pressure spectra are investigated, and low-frequency two-dimensional disturbances associated with the shock motion are dominant. Removing the two-dimensional component from the spectra, the pressure-side three-dimensional spectra reproduce the spectral shape given by a correlation for flat-plate boundary layer wall-pressure spectra developed by Goody. 1 The suction-side disturbances produce similar high- and intermediate-frequency scalings despite substantially different boundary layer development. Near-wake results show that disturbance kinetic energy peaks at the suction-side inflection point of the mean profile, and that the energy is concentrated at low frequencies relative to the near-trailing edge surface pressure. This paper presents an analytical modeling technique for the simulation of long-range ultrasonic guided waves in structures. The model may be used to predict the displacement field in a prismatic structure arising from any excitation arrangement and may therefore be used as a tool to design new inspection systems. It is computationally efficient and relatively simple to implement, yet gives accuracy similar to finite element analysis and semi-analytical finite element analysis methods. The model has many potential applications; one example is the optimization of part-circumferential arrays where access to the full circumference of the pipe is restricted. The model has been successfully validated by comparison with finite element solutions. Experimental validation has also been carried out using an array of piezoelectric transducer elements to measure the displacement field arising from a single transducer element in an 88.9-mm-diameter pipe. Good agreement has been obtained between the two models and the experimental data.

Variational methods are a key component of the approximate inference and learning toolbox. These methods fill an important middle ground, retaining distributional information about uncertainty in latent variables, unlike maximum a posteriori methods (MAP), and yet generally requiring less computational time than Monte Carlo Markov Chain methods. In particular the variational Expectation Maximisation (vEM) and variational Bayes algorithms, both involving variational optimisation of a free-energy, are widely used in time-series modelling. Here, we investigate the success of vEM in simple probabilistic time-series models. First we consider the inference step of vEM, and show that a consequence of the well-known compactness property of variational inference is a failure to propagate uncertainty in time, thus limiting the usefulness of the retained distributional information. In particular, the uncertainty may appear to be smallest precisely when the approximation is poorest. Second, we consider parameter learning and analytically reveal systematic biases in the parameters found by vEM. Surprisingly, simpler variational approximations (such a mean-field) can lead to less bias than more complicated structured approximations.
