This study examines the kinetics of carbonation by CO2 at temperatures of ca. 750a0;°C of a synthetic sorbent composed of 15a0;wt% mayenite (Ca12Al14O33) and CaO, designated HA-85-850, and draws comparisons with the carbonation of a calcined limestone. In-situ XRD has verified the inertness of mayenite, which neither interacts with the active CaO nor does it significantly alter the CaO carbonation–calcination equilibrium. An overlapping grain model was developed to predict the rate and extent of carbonation of HA-85-850 and limestone. In the model, the initial microstructure of the sorbent was defined by a discretised grain size distribution, assuming spherical grains. The initial input to the model – the size distribution of grains – was a fitted parameter, which was in good agreement with measurements made with mercury porosimetry and by the analysis of SEM images of sectioned particles. It was found that the randomly overlapping spherical grain assumption offered great simplicity to the model, despite its approximation to the actual porous structure within a particle. The model was able to predict the performance of the materials well and, particularly, was able to account for changes in rate and extent of reaction as the structure evolved after various numbers of cycles of calcination and carbonation.

Gas-phase silver nanoparticles were coated with silicon dioxide (SiO2) by photoinduced chemical vapor deposition (photo-CVD). Silver nanoparticles, produced by inert gas condensation, and a SiO2 precursor, tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), were exposed to vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation at atmospheric pressure and varying temperatures. The VUV photons dissociate the TEOS precursor, initiating a chemical reaction that forms SiO2 coatings on the particle surfaces. Coating thicknesses were measured for a variety of operation parameters using tandem differential mobility analysis and transmission electron microscopy. The chemical composition of the particle coatings was analyzed using energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The highest purity films were produced at 300-400 degrees C with low flow rates of additional oxygen. The photo-CVD coating technique was shown to effectively coat nanoparticles and limit core particle agglomeration at concentrations up to 10(7) particles cm(-3).

Growth of Au-catalyzed InP nanowires (NWs) by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) has been studied in the temperature range of 400-510 °C and V/III ratio of 44-700. We demonstrate that minimal tapering of InP NWs can be achieved at 400 °C and V/III ratio of 350. Zinc-blende (ZB) or wurtzite (WZ) NWs is obtained depending on the growth conditions. 4K microphotoluminescence (μ-PL) studies show that emission energy is blue-shifted as growth temperature increases. By changing these growth parameters, one can tune the emission wavelength of InP NWs which is attractive for applications in developing novel optoelectronic devices. © 2010 IEEE.

The effects of growth temperature and V/III ratio on the morphology and crystallographic phases of InP nanowires that are grown by metal organic chemical vapour deposition have been studied. We show that higher growth temperatures or higher V/III ratios promote the formation of wurtzite nanowires while zinc-blende nanowires are favourableat lower growth temperatures and lower V/III ratios. A schematic map of distribution of zinc-blende and wurtzite structures has been developed in the range of growth temperatures (400-510 °C) and V/III ratios (44 to 700) investigated in this study. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.

An electron cyclotron wave resonant methane plasma discharge was used for the high rate deposition of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H). Deposition rates of up to ∼400 Å/min were obtained over substrates up to 2.5 in. in diameter with a film thickness uniformity of ∼±10%. The deposited films were characterised in terms of their mass density, sp3 and hydrogen contents, C-H bonding, intrinsic stress, scratch resistance and friction properties. The deposited films possessed an average sp3 content, mass density and refractive index of ∼58%, 1.76 g/cm3 and 2.035 respectively.Mechanical characterisation indicated that the films possessed very low steady-state coefficients of friction (ca. 0.06) and a moderate shear strength of ∼141 MPa. Nano-indentation measurements also indicated a hardness and elastic modulus of ∼16.1 and 160 GPa respectively. The critical loads required to induce coating failure were also observed to increase with ion energy as a consequence of the increase in degree of ion mixing at the interface. Furthermore, coating failure under scratch test conditions was observed to take place via fracture within the silicon substrate itself, rather than either in the coating or at the film/substrate interface. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. The authors have doped RABiTS coated conductor tapes with Ca in an attempt to enhance the transport properties. By diffusing Ca into the YBCO film from a CaZrO3 overlayer, the authors have been able to preferentially dope the grain boundaries of the superconductor. Hence it has been possible to obtain doped tapes which do not have a significantly degraded T-c. The authors have measured the critical currents of doped and undoped samples over a wide range of temperature, magnetic field, and magnetic field angle in order to study the effect of Ca on the grain boundaries. The authors find that doping using short anneal times produces enhanced critical currents in large magnetic fields.
