This paper theoretically investigates the application of tuned vibration absorbers and hybrid passive/active inertial actuators to reduce the vibrational responses of plates and shells. The passive/active actuators are initially applied to a simple plate. A model of a submerged hull consisting of a ring stiffened finite cylinder with bulkheads and external fluid loading is then considered. The fluctuating forces from the propeller result in excitation of the low frequency global hull modes. Inertial actuators and tuned vibration absorbers are located at each end of the hull and in circumferential arrays to reduce the hull structural response at its axial resonances. The control performance of the hybrid passive/active inertial actuator, where the passive component is tuned to a structural resonance, is compared to the attenuation achieved by a fully passive tuned vibration absorber. This work shows the potential of using hybrid passive/active inertial actuators to attenuate the global structural responses of a submerged vessel.

Active vibration control of a submerged hull is presented. A submarine hull can be idealised as a ring stiffened finite cylinder with applied fluid loading. At low frequencies, rotation of the propeller results in discrete tones at the blade passing frequency and its harmonics. The low frequency axial and radial vibration modes of the submerged body can result in a high level of radiated noise. Global hull modes are difficult to attenuate since passive control techniques such as damping materials are not practical due to size and weight constraints. This work investigates active vibration control of a submarine hull for attenuation of the structural and acoustic responses. Based on a feedforward algorithm at tonal frequencies, active vibration suppression of the axial and radial hull displacements are investigated. The effect of the various control arrangements on the structure-borne radiated noise is examined. Numerical simulations of the control performance are presented.

This paper studies the low frequency vibrational behaviour of a submerged hull. The submerged hull is modelled as a finite fluid-loaded cylindrical shell closed at each end by circular plates. The external pressure acting on the hull due to the fluid loading is analytically calculated using an infinite model. Three excitation cases of the hull are considered. In the first model, an axial point force is applied at the centre of one end plate, giving rise to an axisymmetric case in which only the zeroth circumferential shell modes are excited. In the second model, an axial point force is applied at the edge of the end plate. In the third model, a radial point force is applied also at the edge of the end plate. In the second and third load cases, all cylindrical shell circumferential modes are excited. The effects of fluid loading and different excitation locations are studied. A more complex hull model including stiffeners and bulkheads is then examined. A smeared approach is used to analytically model the ring stiffeners. All load cases are again considered and the effects of the various influencing factors on the low frequency responses are described.

The fabrication of carbon nanomaterials usually calls for expensive vacuum systems to generate plasmas and yields are disappointingly low. Here we describe a simple method for producing high-quality spherical carbon nano-'onions' in large quantities without the use of vacuum equipment. The nanoparticles, which have C60 cores surrounded by onion-like nested particles, are generated by an arc discharge between two graphite electrodes submerged in water. This technique is economical and environmentally benign, and produces uncontaminated nanoparticles which may be useful in many applications.

Comprehensive understanding of the long-term performance of cement-bentonite slurry trench cut-off walls is essential as these mixes may degrade when exposed to aggressive environments or when subjected to prolonged drying. A series of wetting-drying and immersion experiments was carried out to evaluate the durability characteristics of laboratory mixed samples and block field samples from 40 days to 11 years of age. For the wetting-drying tests, the samples buried in medium graded sand were subjected to periodical flooding and drying cycles. They were then used for permeability testing and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) testing. For the immersion tests, the samples confined in perforated molds were submerged in magnesium sulfate solution for 16 weeks and their microstructures were then analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. This paper identifies the effects of contaminant exposure on durability of cement-bentonite and the effects of aging by comparing 11 years old samples to younger samples. Test results showed that young or previously contaminated cement-bentonite mixes are more susceptible to sulfate attack than old or less contaminated mixes. Copyright ASCE 2008.

Over recent years academia and industry have engaged with the challenge of model testing deepwater structures at conventional scales. One approach to the limited depth problem has been to truncate the lines. This concept will be introduced, highlighting the need to better understand line dynamic processes. The type of line truncation developed here models the upper sections of each line in detail, capturing wave action and all coupling effects with the vessel, terminating to an approximate analytical model that aims to simulate the remainder of the line. A rationale for this is that in deep water transverse elastic waves of a line are likely to decay before they are reflected at the seabed because of nonlinear hydrodynamic drag forces. The first part of this paper is centered on verification of this rationale. A simplified model of a mooring line that describes the transverse dynamics in wave frequency is used, adopting the equation of motion of an inextensible taut string. The line is submerged in still water, one end fixed at the bottom the other assumed to follow the vessel response, which can be harmonic or random. A dimensional analysis, supported by exact benchmark numerical solutions, has shown that it is possible to produce a universal curve for the decay of transverse vibrations along the line, which is suitable for any kind of line with any top motion. This has a significant engineering benefit, allowing for a rapid assessment of line dynamics - it can be useful in deciding whether a truncated line model is appropriate, and if so, at which point truncation might be applied. This is followed by developing a truncation mechanism, formulating an end approximation that can reproduce the correct impedance, had the line been continuous to full depth. It has been found that below a certain length criterion, which is also universal, the transverse vibrational characteristics for each line are inertia driven. As such the truncated model can assume a linear damper whose coefficient depends on the line properties and frequency of vibration. Submarines are efficient sources of low frequency radiated noise due to the vibrations induced by the rotation of the propeller in a non uniform wake. In this work the possibility of using inertial actuators to reduce the far field sound pressure is investigated. The submerged vessel is modelled as a cylindrical shell with two conical end caps. Complicating effects such as ring stiffeners, bulkheads and the fluid loading are taken into account. A harmonic radial force is transmitted from the propeller to the hull through the stern end cone and it is tonal at the blade passing frequency (rotational speed of the shaft multiplied by the number of blades). The actuators are attached at the inside of the prow end cone to form a circumferential array. Both Active Vibration Control (AVC) and Active Structural Acoustic Control (ASAC) are analysed and it is shown that the inertial actuators can significantly reduce the far field sound pressure.

Acoustic radiation from a spherical source undergoing angularly periodic axisymmetric harmonic surface vibrations while eccentrically suspended within a thermoviscous fluid sphere, which is immersed in a viscous thermally conducting unbounded fluid medium, is analyzed in an exact fashion. The formulation uses the appropriate wave-harmonic field expansions along with the translational addition theorem for spherical wave functions and the relevant boundary conditions to develop a closed-form solution in form of infinite series. The analytical results are illustrated with a numerical example in which the vibrating source is eccentrically positioned within a chemical fluid sphere submerged in water. The modal acoustic radiation impedance load on the source and the radiated far-field pressure are evaluated and discussed for representative values of the parameters characterizing the system. The proposed model can lead to a better understanding of dynamic response of an underwater acoustic lens. It is equally applicable in miniature transducer analysis and design with applications in medical ultrasonics.

Model tests for global design verification of deepwater floating structures cannot be made at reasonable scales. An overview of recent research efforts to tackle this challenge is given first, introducing the concept of line truncation techniques. In such a method the upper sections of each line are modelled in detail, capturing the wave action zone and all coupling effects with the vessel. These terminate to an approximate analytical model, that aims to simulate the remainder of the line. The rationale for this is that in deep water the transverse elastic waves of a line are likely to decay before they are reflected at the seabed. The focus of this paper is the verification of this rationale and the ongoing work, which is considering ways to produce a truncation model. Transverse dynamics of a mooring line are modelled using the equations of motion of an inextensible taut string, submerged in still water, one end fixed at the bottom the other assumed to follow the vessel response, which can be harmonic or random. Nonlinear hydrodynamic damping is included; bending and VIV effects are neglected. A dimensional analysis, supported by exact benchmark numerical solutions, has shown that it is possible to produce a universal curve for the decay of transverse vibrations along the line, which is suitable for any kind of line with any top motion. This has a significant engineering benefit, allowing for a rapid assessment of line dynamics - it is very useful in deciding whether a truncated line model is appropriate, and if so, at which point truncation might be applied. Initial efforts in developing a truncated model show that a linearized numerical solution in the frequency domain matches very closely the exact benchmark. Copyright © 2011 by ASME.

Vibration modes of a submerged hull are excited by fluctuating forces generated at the propeller and transmitted to the hull via the propeller-shafting system. The low frequency hull vibrational modes result in significant sound radiation. This work investigates the reduction of the far-field radiated sound pressure by optimising the connection point of the shafting system to the hull. The submarine hull is modelled as a fluid loaded cylindrical hull with truncated conical shells at each end. The propeller-shafting system consists of the propeller, shaft, thrust bearing and foundation, and is modelled in a modular approach using a combination of spring-mass-damper elements and continuous systems (beams, plates, shells). The foundation is attached to the stern side end plate of the hull, which is modelled as a circular plate coupled to an annular plate. By tuning the connection radius of the foundation to the end plate, the maximum radiated noise in a given frequency range can be minimised.
