We report the observation of strongly temperature (T)-dependent spectral lines in electronic Raman-scattering spectra of graphite in a high magnetic field up to 45 T applied along the c axis. The magnetic field quantizes the in-plane motion, while the out-of-plane motion remains free, effectively reducing the system dimension from 3 to 1. Optically created electron-hole pairs interact with, or shake up, the one-dimensional Fermi sea in the lowest Landau subbands. Based on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory, we show that interaction effects modify the spectral line shape from (ω-Δ)-1/2 to (ω-Δ)2α-1/2 at T = 0. At finite T, we predict a thermal broadening factor that increases linearly with T. Our model reproduces the observed T-dependent line shape, determining the electron-electron interaction parameter α to be ∼0.05 at 40 T. © 2014 American Physical Society.

We present a statistical model-based approach to signal enhancement in the case of additive broadband noise. Because broadband noise is localised in neither time nor frequency, its removal is one of the most pervasive and difficult signal enhancement tasks. In order to improve perceived signal quality, we take advantage of human perception and define a best estimate of the original signal in terms of a cost function incorporating perceptual optimality criteria. We derive the resultant signal estimator and implement it in a short-time spectral attenuation framework. A new, and very simple spectrometer based on birefringent fiber is described. A resolution of 0.02 angstrom has been achieved, and the system has been used to measure diode laser chirp. A length of 10km of fiber would be sufficient to resolve single mode line widths.

This paper demonstrates how a finite element model which exploits domain decomposition is applied to the analysis of three-phase induction motors. It is shown that a significant gain in cpu time results when compared with standard finite element analysis. Aspects of the application of the method which are particular to induction motors are considered: the means of improving the convergence of the nonlinear finite element equations; the choice of symmetrical sub-domains; the modelling of relative movement; and the inclusion of periodic boundary conditions. © 1999 IEEE.

In this paper, a Decimative Spectral estimation method based on Eigenanalysis and SVD (Singular Value Decomposition) is presented and applied to speech signals in order to estimate Formant/Bandwidth values. The underlying model decomposes a signal into complex damped sinusoids. The algorithm is applied not only on speech samples but on a small amount of the autocorrelation coefficients of a speech frame as well, for finer estimation. Correct estimation of Formant/Bandwidth values depend on the model order thus, the requested number of poles. Overall, experimentation results indicate that the proposed methodology successfully estimates formant trajectories and their respective bandwidths.

A one-dimensional analytical model is developed for the steady state, axisymmetric, slender flow of saturated powder in a rotating perforated cone. Both the powder and the fluid spin with the cone with negligible slip in the hoop direction. They migrate up the wall of the cone along a generator under centrifugal force, which also forces the fluid out of the cone through the powder layer and the porous wall. The flow thus evolves from an over-saturated paste at inlet into a nearly dry powder at outlet. The powder is treated as a Mohr-Coulomb granular solid of constant void fraction and permeability. The shear traction at the wall is assumed to be velocity and pressure dependent. The fluid is treated as Newtonian viscous. The model provides the position of the colour line (the transition from over- to under-saturation) and the flow velocity and thickness profiles over the cone. Surface tension effects are assumed negligible compared to the centrifugal acceleration. Two alternative conditions are considered for the flow structure at inlet: fully settled powder at inlet, and progressive settling of an initially homogeneous slurry. The position of the colour line is found to be similar for these two cases over a wide range of operating conditions. Dominant dimensionless groups are identified which control the position of the colour line in a continuous conical centrifuge. Experimental observations of centrifuges used in the sugar industry provide preliminary validation of the model. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

A theoretical model for Dicke superradiance (SR) in diode lasers is proposed using the travelling wave method with a spatially resolved absorber and spectrally resolved gain. The role of electrode configuration and optical bandwidth are compared and contrasted as a route to enhance femtosecond pulse power. While pulse duration can be significantly reduced through careful absorber length specification, stability is degraded. However an increased spectral gain bandwidth of up to 150 nm is predicted to allow pulsewidth reductions of down to 10 fs and over 500-W peak power without further degradation in pulse stability. © 2011 IEEE.
Hybrid model predictive control applied to switching control of burner load for a compact marine boi
Resumo:
This paper discusses the application of hybrid model predictive control to control switching between different burner modes in a novel compact marine boiler design. A further purpose of the present work is to point out problems with finite horizon model predictive control applied to systems for which the optimal solution is a limit cycle. Regarding the marine boiler control the aim is to find an optimal control strategy which minimizes a trade-off between deviations in boiler pressure and water level from their respective setpoints while limiting burner switches. The approach taken is based on the Mixed Logic Dynamical framework. The whole boiler systems is modelled in this framework and a model predictive controller is designed. However to facilitate on-line implementation only a small part of the search tree in the mixed integer optimization is evaluated to find out whether a switch should occur or not. The strategy is verified on a simulation model of the compact marine boiler for control of low/high burner load switches. It is shown that even though performance is adequate for some disturbance levels it becomes deteriorated when the optimal solution is a limit cycle. Most academic control schemes for MIMO systems assume all the control variables are updated simultaneously. MPC outperforms other control strategies through its ability to deal with constraints. This requires on-line optimization, hence computational complexity can become an issue when applying MPC to complex systems with fast response times. The multiplexed MPC scheme described in this paper solves the MPC problem for each subsystem sequentially, and updates subsystem controls as soon as the solution is available, thus distributing the control moves over a complete update cycle. The resulting computational speed-up allows faster response to disturbances, and hence improved performance, despite finding sub-optimal solutions to the original problem. The multiplexed MPC scheme is also closer to industrial practice in many cases. This paper presents initial stability results for two variants of multiplexed MPC, and illustrates the performance benefit by an example. Copyright copy; 2005 IFAC. Copyright © 2005 IFAC.

This paper proposes a form of MPC in which the control variables are moved asynchronously. This contrasts with most MIMO control schemes, which assume that all variables are updated simultaneously. MPC outperforms other control strategies through its ability to deal with constraints. This requires on-line optimization, hence computational complexity can become an issue when applying MPC to complex systems with fast response times. The Multiplexed MPC (MMPC) scheme described in this paper solves the MPC problem for each subsystem sequentially, and updates subsystem controls as soon as the solution is available, thus distributing the control moves over a complete update cycle. The resulting computational speed-up allows faster response to disturbances, which may result in improved performance, despite finding sub-optimal solutions to the original problem. This paper describes nominal and robust MMPC, states some stability results, and demonstrates the effectiveness of MMPC through two examples. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A driver model is presented capable of optimising the trajectory of a simple dynamic nonlinear vehicle, at constant forward speed, so that progression along a predefined track is maximised as a function of time. In doing so, the model is able to continually operate a vehicle at its lateral-handling limit, maximising vehicle performance. The technique used forms a part of the solution to the motor racing objective of minimising lap time. A new approach of formulating the minimum lap time problem is motivated by the need for a more computationally efficient and robust tool-set for understanding on-the-limit driving behaviour. This has been achieved through set point-dependent linearisation of the vehicle model and coupling the vehicle-track system using an intrinsic coordinate description. Through this, the geometric vehicle trajectory had been linearised relative to the track reference, leading to new path optimisation algorithm which can be formed as a computationally efficient convex quadratic programming problem. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

The objective of this paper is to propose a signal processing scheme that employs subspace-based spectral analysis for the purpose of formant estimation of speech signals. Specifically, the scheme is based on decimative spectral estimation that uses Eigenanalysis and SVD (Singular Value Decomposition). The underlying model assumes a decomposition of the processed signal into complex damped sinusoids. In the case of formant tracking, the algorithm is applied on a small amount of the autocorrelation coefficients of a speech frame. The proposed scheme is evaluated on both artificial and real speech utterances from the TIMIT database. For the first case, comparative results to standard methods are provided which indicate that the proposed methodology successfully estimates formant trajectories.
