A technique for pattern transfer onto carbon-diamond films deposited by radio-frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition is reported. Such a technique involves standard photolithography processes and reactive ion etching by oxygen and is compatible with present day microelectronic technology. The patterns transferred are well defined with very good resolution. © 1992.

In the modern engineering design cycle the use of computational tools becomes a neces- sity. The complexity of the engineering systems under consideration for design increases dramatically as the demands for advanced and innovative design concepts and engineering products is expanding. At the same time the advancements in the available technology in terms of computational resources and power, as well as the intelligence of the design software, accommodate these demands and make them a viable approach towards the chal- lenge of real-world engineering problems. This class of design optimisation problems is by nature multi-disciplinary. In the present work we establish enhanced optimisation capabil- ities within the Nimrod/O tool for massively distributed execution of computational tasks through cluster and computational grid resources, and develop the potential to combine and benefit from all the possible available technological advancements, both software and hardware. We develop the interface between a Free Form Deformation geometry manage- ment in-house code with the 2D airfoil aerodynamic efficiency evaluation tool XFoil, and the well established multi-objective heuristic optimisation algorithm NSGA-II. A simple airfoil design problem has been defined to demonstrate the functionality of the design sys- tem, but also to accommodate a framework for future developments and testing with other state-of-the-art optimisation algorithms such as the Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) and the Multi-Objective Tabu Search (MOTS) techniques. Ultimately, heav- ily computationally expensive industrial design cases can be realised within the presented framework that could not be investigated before. © 2012 by the authors. Infrared magnitude-redshift relations for the 3CR and 6C samples of radio galaxies are presented for a wide range of plausible cosmological models, including those with non-zero cosmological constant OmegaLambda. Variations in the galaxy formation redshift, metallicity and star formation history are also considered. The results of the modelling are displayed in terms of magnitude differences between the models and no-evolution tracks, illustrating the amount of K-band evolution necessary to account for the observational data. Given a number of plausible assumptions, the results of these analyses suggest that: (i) cosmologies which predict T_0xH_0>1 (where T_0 denotes the current age of the universe) can be excluded; (ii) the star formation redshift should lie in the redshift interval 5radio galaxies are more luminous (ie. more massive) than those nearby in models with finite OmegaLambda, including the favoured model with Omega=0.3, OmegaLambda=0.7. For cosmological models with larger values of T_0xH_0, the conclusions are the same regardless of whether any adjustments are made or not. The implications of these results for cosmology and models of galaxy formation are discussed.

Node placement plays a significant role in the effective and successful deployment of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), i.e., meeting design goals such as cost effectiveness, coverage, connectivity, lifetime and data latency. In this paper, we propose a new strategy to assist in the placement of Relay Nodes (RNs) for a WSN monitoring underground tunnel infrastructure. By applying for the first time an accurate empirical mean path loss propagation model along with a well fitted fading distribution model specifically defined for the tunnel environment, we address the RN placement problem with guaranteed levels of radio link performance. The simulation results show that the choice of appropriate path loss model and fading distribution model for a typical environment is vital in the determination of the number and the positions of RNs. Furthermore, we adapt a two-tier clustering multi-hop framework in which the first tier of the RN placement is modelled as the minimum set cover problem, and the second tier placement is solved using the search-and-find algorithm. The implementation of the proposed scheme is evaluated by simulation, and it lays the foundations for further work in WSN planning for underground tunnel applications. © 2010 IEEE.

In speech recognition systems language model (LMs) are often constructed by training and combining multiple n-gram models. They can be either used to represent different genres or tasks found in diverse text sources, or capture stochastic properties of different linguistic symbol sequences, for example, syllables and words. Unsupervised LM adaptation may also be used to further improve robustness to varying styles or tasks. When using these techniques, extensive software changes are often required. In this paper an alternative and more general approach based on weighted finite state transducers (WFSTs) is investigated for LM combination and adaptation. As it is entirely based on well-defined WFST operations, minimum change to decoding tools is needed. A wide range of LM combination configurations can be flexibly supported. An efficient on-the-fly WFST decoding algorithm is also proposed. Significant error rate gains of 7.3% relative were obtained on a state-of-the-art broadcast audio recognition task using a history dependently adapted multi-level LM modelling both syllable and word sequences. ©2010 IEEE.
