BGCore reactor analysis system was recently developed at Ben-Gurion University for calculating in-core fuel composition and spent fuel emissions following discharge. It couples the Monte Carlo transport code MCNP with an independently developed burnup and decay module SARAF. Most of the existing MCNP based depletion codes (e.g. MOCUP, Monteburns, MCODE) tally directly the one-group fluxes and reaction rates in order to prepare one-group cross sections necessary for the fuel depletion analysis. BGCore, on the other hand, uses a multi-group (MG) approach for generation of one group cross-sections. This coupling approach significantly reduces the code execution time without compromising the accuracy of the results. Substantial reduction in the BGCore code execution time allows consideration of problems with much higher degree of complexity, such as introduction of thermal hydraulic (TH) feedback into the calculation scheme. Recently, a simplified TH feedback module, THERMO, was developed and integrated into the BGCore system. To demonstrate the capabilities of the upgraded BGCore system, a coupled neutronic TH analysis of a full PWR core was performed. The BGCore results were compared with those of the state of the art 3D deterministic nodal diffusion code DYN3D (Grundmann et al.; 2000). Very good agreement in major core operational parameters including k-eff eigenvalue, axial and radial power profiles, and temperature distributions between the BGCore and DYN3D results was observed. This agreement confirms the consistency of the implementation of the TH feedback module. Although the upgraded BGCore system is capable of performing both, depletion and TH analyses, the calculations in this study were performed for the beginning of cycle state with pre-generated fuel compositions. © 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V.

At present, optimisation is an enabling technology in innovation. Multi-objective and multi-disciplinary design tools are essential in the engineering design process, and have been applied successfully in aerospace and turbomachinery applications extensively. These approaches give insight into the design space and identify the trade-offs between the competing performance measures satisfying a number of constraints at the same time. It is anticipated here that the same benefits can be obtained for the design of micro-scale combustors. In this paper, a multi-disciplinary automated design optimisation system was developed for this purpose, which comprises a commercial computational fluid dynamics package and a multi-objective variant of the Tabu Search optimisation algorithm. The main objectives that are considered in this study are to optimise the main micro-scale combustor design characteristics and to satisfy manufacturability considerations from the very beginning of the whole design operation. Hydrogen-air combustion as well as 14 geometrical and 2 operational parameters are used to describe and model the design problem. Two illustrative test cases will be presented, in which the most important device operational requirements are optimised, and the efficiency of the developed optimisation system is demonstrated. The identification, assessment and suitability of the optimum design configurations are discussed in detail. Copyright © 2012 by ASME.

A multi-objective design optimisation study has been carried out with the objectives to improve the overall efficiency of the device and to reduce the fuel consumption for the proposed micro-scale combustor design configuration. In a previous study we identified the topology of the combustion chamber that produced improved behaviour of the device in terms of the above design criteria. We now extend our design approach, and we propose a new configuration by the addition of a micro-cooling channel that will improve the thermal behaviour of the design as previously suggested in literature. Our initial numerical results revealed an improvement of 2.6% in the combustion efficiency when we applied the micro-cooling channel to an optimum design configuration we identified from our earlier multi-objective optimisation study, and under the same operating conditions. The computational modelling of the combustion process is implemented in the commercial computational fluid dynamics package ANSYS-CFX using Finite Rate Chemistry and a single step hydrogen-air reaction. With this model we try to balance good accuracy of the combustion solution and at the same time practicality within the context of an optimisation process. The whole design system comprises also the ANSYS-ICEM CFD package for the automatic geometry and mesh generation and the Multi-Objective Tabu Search algorithm for the design space exploration. We model the design problem with 5 geometrical parameters and 3 operational parameters subject to 5 design constraints that secure practicality and feasibility of the new optimum design configurations. The final results demonstrate the reliability and efficiency of the developed computational design system and most importantly we assess the practicality and manufacturability of the revealed optimum design configurations of micro-combustor devices. This paper investigates the effects of design parameters, such as cladding and coolant material choices, and operational phenomena, such as creep and fission product decay heat, on the tolerance of Accelerator Driven Subcritical Reactor (ADSR) fuel pin cladding to beam interruptions. This work aims to provide a greater understanding of the integration between accelerator and nuclear reactor technologies in ADSRs. The results show that an upper limit on cladding operating temperature of 550 °C is appropriate, as higher values of temperature tend to accelerate creep, leading to cladding failure much sooner than anticipated. The effect of fission product decay heat is to reduce significantly the maximum stress developed in the cladding during a beam-trip-induced transient. The potential impact of irradiation damage and the effects of the liquid metal coolant environment on the cladding are discussed. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents an improvement of an IGBT gate drive implementing Active Voltage Control (AVC), and investigates the impact of various parameters affecting its performance. The effects of the bandwidths of various elements and the gains of AVC are shown in simulation and experimentally. Also, the paper proposes connecting a small Active Snubber between the IGBT collector and its gate integrated within the AVC. The effect of this snubber on enhancing the stability of the gate drive is demonstrated. It will be shown that using a wide bandwidth operational amplifier and integrating the Active Snubber within the gate drive reduces the minimum gate resistor required to achieve stability of the controller. Consequently, the response time of the IGBT to control signals is significantly reduced, the switching losses then can be minimised and, hence, the performance of gate drive as whole is improved. This reflects positively on turn-off and turn-on transitions achieving voltage sharing between the IGBTs connected in series to construct a higher voltage switch, making series IGBTs a feasible practice. ©2008 IEEE.

Supersonic cluster beam deposition has been used to produce films with different nanostructures by controlling the deposition parameters such as the film thickness, substrate temperature and cluster mass distribution. The field emission properties of cluster-assembled carbon films have been characterized and correlated to the evolution of the film nanostructure. Threshold fields ranging between 4 and 10 V/mum and saturation current densities as high as 0.7 mA have been measured for samples heated during deposition. A series of voltage ramps, i.e., a conditioning process, was found to initiate more stable and reproducible emission. It was found that the presence of graphitic particles (onions, nanotube embryos) in the films substantially enhances the field emission performance. Films patterned on a micrometer scale have been conditioned spot by spot by a ball-tip anode, showing that a relatively high emission site density can be achieved from the cluster-assembled material. This paper considers a class of dynamic Spatial Point Processes (PP) that evolves over time in a Markovian fashion. This Markov in time PP is hidden and observed indirectly through another PP via thinning, displacement and noise. This statistical model is important for Multi object Tracking applications and we present an approximate likelihood based method for estimating the model parameters. The work is supported by an extensive numerical study.
