This paper reports a preliminary examination of the effect of anchor geometry design on the quality factor of flexural mode resonators operating in vacuum using both FE simulation and measurements of resonator frequency response. Three types of structures have been considered in this study: an elliptical mode ring, a double ended tuning fork, and a doubly-clamped beam. We consider the relative distribution of strain energies in both the resonant structure and the connecting stem, which is indicative of the measured quality factor. The measured quality factors of the different structures are compared against each other, based on which suggestions are proposed for optimizing the anchor limited quality factor (Q) in flexural mode micromechanical resonators. ©2008 IEEE.

MEMS resonators fabricated in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology must be clamped to the substrate via anchoring stems connected either from within the resonator or through the sides, with the side-clamped solution often employed due to manufacturing constraints. This paper examines the effect of two types of commonly used side-clamped, anchoring-stem geometries on the quality factor of three different laterally-driven resonator topologies. This study employs an analytical framework which considers the relative distribution of strain energies between the resonating body and clamping stems. The ratios of the strain energies are computed using ANSYS FEA and used to provide an indicator of the expected anchor-limited quality factors. Three MEMS resonator topologies have been fabricated and characterized in moderate vacuum. The associated measured quality factors are compared against the computed strain energy ratios, and the trends are shown to agree well with the experimental data. © 2011 IOP Publishing Ltd.

This paper discusses two projects, the first relating to tests on 'reinforced earth' conducted on the 1. 5 m radius centrifuge at U. M. I. S. T. and the second concerning a short pilot study on the T. R. R. L concept of 'anchored earth' carried out on the 5 m radius Cambridge Geotechnical Centrifuge. The paper proposes a role for centrifugal model testing in design evaluation, whether by the designer himself, his centrification authority, a rival patent holder, or a research worker.

As a potential poverty reduction and climate change strategy, this paper considers the advantages and disadvantages of using renewable energy technologies for rural electrification in developing countries. Although each case must be considered independently, given a reliable fuel source, renewable energy mini-grids powered by biomass gasifiers or micro-hydro plants appear to be the favoured option due to their lower levelised costs, provision of AC power, potential to provide a 24. h service and ability to host larger capacity systems that can power a wide range of electricity uses. Sustainability indicators are applied to three case studies in order to explore the extent to which sustainable welfare benefits can be created by renewable energy mini-grids. Policy work should focus on raising awareness about renewable energy mini-grids, improving institutional, technical and regulatory frameworks and developing innovative financing mechanisms to encourage private sector investments. Establishing joint technology and community engagement training centres should also be encouraged. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

In this study an inductor-less piezoelectric transformer (PT) based ballast for a 5 W CFL has been designed and simulated. The predictions of circuit currents and losses closely match experimentally measured values. The total simulated loss figure was confirmed against practically determined losses using a precision mini-calorimeter. Using simulation to disaggregate the total loss figure, it is seen that the PT makes the largest contribution to the total losses in such ballast.

Attempts were made to quantify the environmental impacts of the basement walls of two commercial buildings in London. Four different retaining wall options were designed based on steel and concrete systems for each of the sites. It was considered that excavation would take place with the aid of a one or two anchors system. Evaluation of embodied energy (EE) and CO2 emissions for each of the wall designs and anchoring systems were compared. Results show that there are notable differences in EE between different wall designs. Using the averaged set of Embodied Energy Intensity (EEI) values, the use of recycled steel over virgin steel would reduce the EE of the wall significantly. The difference in anchor designs is relatively insignificant, and therefore the practicality of the design for the specific site should be the deciding factor for anchor types. Generally, the scale of environmental impacts due to constructions is large compared to other aspects in life as demonstrated with the comparisons to car emissions and household energy consumption. Commercially available integrated compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) use self-resonant ballasts on grounds of simplicity and cost. To understand how to improve ballast efficiency, it is necessary to quantify the losses. The losses occurring in these ballasts have been directly measured using a precision mini-calorimeter. In addition, a Pspice model has been used to simulate the performance of an 18 W integrated CFL. The lamp has been represented by a behavioural model and Jiles-Atherton equations were used to model the current transformer core. The total loss is in close agreement with measurements from the mini-calorimeter, confirming the accuracy of the model. The total loss was then disaggregated into component losses by simulation, showing that the output inductor is the primary source of loss, followed by the inverter switches. © 2011 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.
