Three-phase induction motors offer significant advantages over commutator motors in some domestic appliances. Models for wide speed range three-phase induction motors for use in a horizontal axis washing machine have been developed using the MEGA finite element package with an external formulation for calculating iron losses. Motor loss predictions have been verified using a novel high accuracy calorimeter. Good agreement has been observed over a wide speed range at different loadings. The model is used to predict motor temperature rise under typical washing machine loading conditions to ensure its limiting temperature is not exceeded and enables alternative designs to be investigated without recourse to physical prototypes. © 2005 IEEE.

Spin information processing is a possible new paradigm for post-CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) electronics and efficient spin propagation over long distances is fundamental to this vision. However, despite several decades of intense research, a suitable platform is still wanting. We report here on highly efficient spin transport in two-terminal polarizer/analyser devices based on high-mobility epitaxial graphene grown on silicon carbide. Taking advantage of high-impedance injecting/detecting tunnel junctions, we show spin transport efficiencies up to 75%, spin signals in the mega-ohm range and spin diffusion lengths exceeding 100μm. This enables spintronics in complex structures: devices and network architectures relying on spin information processing, well beyond present spintronics applications, can now be foreseen. © 2012 Macmillan Publishers Limited. When tracking resources in large-scale, congested, outdoor construction sites, the cost and time for purchasing, installing and maintaining the position sensors needed to track thousands of materials, and hundreds of equipment and personnel can be significant. To alleviate this problem a novel vision based tracking method that allows each sensor (camera) to monitor the position of multiple entities simultaneously has been proposed. This paper presents the full-scale validation experiments for this method. The validation included testing the method under harsh conditions at a variety of mega-project construction sites. The procedure for collecting data from the sites, the testing procedure, metrics, and results are reported. Full-scale validation demonstrates that the novel vision tracking provides a good solution to track different entities on a large, congested construction site.

We report on the topographical and electrical characterisations of 1 nm thick Al2O3 dielectric films on graphene. The Al 2O3 is grown by sputtering a 0.6 nm Al layer on graphene and subsequentially oxidizing it in an O2 atmosphere. The Al 2O3 layer presents no pinholes and is homogeneous enough to act as a tunnel barrier. A resistance-area product in the mega-ohm micrometer-square range is found. Comparatively, the growth of Al 2O3 by evaporation does not lead to well-wetted films on graphene. Application of this high quality sputtered tunnel barrier to efficient spin injection in graphene is discussed. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.
