This paper reviews advances in the technology of integrated semiconductor optical amplifier based photonic switch fabrics, with particular emphasis on their suitability for high performance network switches for use within a datacenter. The key requirements for large port count optical switch fabrics are addressed noting the need for switches with substantial port counts. The design options for a 16×16 port photonic switch fabric architecture are discussed and the choice of a Clos-tree design is described. The control strategy, based on arbitration and scheduling, for an integrated switch fabric is explained. The detailed design and fabrication of the switch is followed by experimental characterization, showing net optical gain and operation at 10 Gb/s with bit error rates lower than 10-9. Finally improvements to the switch are suggested, which should result in 100 Gb/s per port operation at energy efficiencies of 3 pJ/bit. © 2011 Optical Society of America.

A novel InGaAs/InGaAsP/InP integrated multiwavelength grating cavity laser is presented, which has been used to demonstrate space switching and simultaneous all-optical wavelength conversion at bit rates of 2.488 Gbit/s. This has been achieved using a single monolithically integrated device without the need for post-filtering to separate the converted signal from the input.

With increasing demands on storage devices in the modern communication environment, the storage area network (SAN) has evolved to provide a direct connection allowing these storage devices to be accessed efficiently. To optimize the performance of a SAN, a three-stage hybrid electronic/optical switching node architecture based on the concept of a MPLS label switching mechanism, aimed at serving as a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) ingress label edge router (LER) for a SAN-enabled application, has been designed. New shutter-based free-space multi-channel optical switching cores are employed as the core switch fabric to solve the packet contention and switching path conflict problems. The system-level node architecture design constraints are evaluated through self-similar traffic sourced from real gigabit Ethernet network traces and storage systems. The extension performance of a SAN over a proposed WDM ring network, aimed at serving as an MPLS-enabled transport network, is also presented and demonstrated. © 2012 OSA.

Manually inspecting concrete surface defects (e.g., cracks and air pockets) is not always reliable. Also, it is labor-intensive. In order to overcome these limitations, automated inspection using image processing techniques was proposed. However, the current work can only detect defects in an image without the ability of evaluating them. This paper presents a novel approach for automatically assessing the impact of two common surface defects (i.e., air pockets and discoloration). These two defects are first located using the developed detection methods. Their attributes, such as the number of air pockets and the area of discoloration regions, are then retrieved to calculate defects’ visual impact ratios (VIRs). The appropriate threshold values for these VIRs are selected through a manual rating survey. This way, for a given concrete surface image, its quality in terms of air pockets and discoloration can be automatically measured by judging whether their VIRs are below the threshold values or not. The method presented in this paper was implemented in C++ and a database of concrete surface images was tested to validate its performance. We bring together two areas of terahertz (THz) technology that have benefited from recent advancements in research, i.e., graphene, a material that has plasmonic resonances in the THz frequency, and quantum cascade lasers (QCLs), a compact electrically driven unipolar source of THz radiation. We demonstrate the use of single-layer large-area graphene to indirectly modulate a THz QCL operating at 2.0 THz. By tuning the Fermi level of the graphene via a capacitively coupled backgate voltage, the optical conductivity and, hence, the THz transmission can be varied. We show that, by changing the pulsing frequency of the backgate, the THz transmission can be altered. We also show that, by varying the pulsing frequency of the backgate from tens of Hz to a few kHz, the amplitude-modulated THz signal can be switched by 15% from a low state to a high state. © 2009-2012 IEEE.
