In new product development, the ability to integrate different dimensions of sustainability at a value chain level is still a complex, problematic goal. As product-service approaches are increasingly enabling the introduction of more sustainable paths, this paper describes the authors' experience thus far when building insights into conditions for the implementation of integrated solutions in a process of co-development and testing in real life conditions, which are driven by a social need focusing on food for people with reduced access. Throughout this process, which brought together producers, consumers and other stakeholders to design and test industrialised, sustainable solutions, empirical evidence demonstrates feasibility and usefulness of the approach and insight into the conditions for implementing interactive, comprehensive multi-stakeholder processes in real life situations. In addition, results show that the delivery of innovative solutions enabled to offer social added value, economic profits and environmental improvements under specific experimental conditions. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. A business model for integrating global-production efficiencies with sustainability is discussed. Two trends that emulate some of the aspects of the wealthy are the increasing willingness of many to pay extra for customization such as clothes, of kitchens and the increasing acceptance of purchasing a service as a product substitute. Two final trends that are also based in the attitudes of people is an increased awareness of the value of local culture and an increased concern with issues of sustainability. The results show that the goal congruence between for-profit and not-for-profit organizations puts emphasis on value and belief of the organization.

New measures for estimating the efficiency of transient ventilation flows are proposed. These measures are developed by considering how effectively a ventilation system removes buoyancy from a space. This approach is distinct from standard efficiency measures which are, in general, based on the removal of a neutrally-buoyant passive tracer. Our new measures, based on (active) buoyancy removal, allow both the instantaneous and time-averaged efficiency of the entire space, or of any region within it, to be determined. In addition, expressions for determining vertical profiles of efficiency are proposed. These new measures enable the effectiveness of different flows to be compared directly and are applicable providing density (temperature) differences exist between the interior environment and the replacement air. Thus, they may be used to contrast the effectiveness of a broad range of building ventilation flows including natural, hybrid and forced ventilation.
