In this paper, we demonstrate strong flexoelectric coupling in bimesogenic liquid crystals. This strong coupling is determined via the flexoelectro-optic effect in chiral nematic liquid crystals based on bimesogenic mixtures that are doped with low concentrations of high twisting power chiral additive. Two mixtures were examined: one had a pitch length of p∼300nm, the other had a pitch length of p∼600nm. These mixtures exhibit enantiotropic chiral nematic phases close to room temperature. We found that full-intensity modulation, that is, a rotation of the optic axis of 45° between crossed polarizers, could be achieved at significantly lower applied electric fields (E<5Vμm -1) than previously reported. In fact, for the condition of full-intensity modulation, the lowest electric-field strength recorded was E=2Vμm-1. As a result of a combination of the strong flexoelectric coupling and a divergence in the pitch, tilt angles of the optic axis up to 87°, i.e., a rotation of the optic axis through 174°, were observed. Furthermore, the flexoelastic ratios, which may be considered as a figure-of-merit parameter, were calculated from the results and found to be large, ranging from 1.3to2C/Nm for a temperature range of up to 40°C. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.

A power LDMOS on partial silicon on insulator (PSOI) with a variable low-κ dielectric (VLKD) buried layer and a buried p (BP) layer is proposed (VLKD BPSOI). At a low κ value, the electric field strength in the buried dielectric (EI) is enhanced, and a Si window makes the substrate share the vertical voltage drop, leading to a high vertical breakdown voltage (BV). Moreover, three interface field peaks are introduced by the BP, the Si window, and the VLKD, which modulate the fields in the SOI layer, the VLKD layer, and the substrate; consequently, a high BV is obtained. Furthermore, the BP reduces the specific on-resistance (Ron), and the Si window alleviates the self-heating effect (SHE). The BV for VLKD BPSOI is enhanced by 34.5%, and Ron is decreased by 26.6%, compared with those for the conventional PSOI, and VLKD BPSOI also maintains a low SHE. © 2006 IEEE.

Humans are able to stabilize their movements in environments with unstable dynamics by selectively modifying arm impedance independently of force and torque. We further investigated adaptation to unstable dynamics to determine whether the CNS maintains a constant overall level of stability as the instability of the environmental dynamics is varied. Subjects performed reaching movements in unstable force fields of varying strength, generated by a robotic manipulator. Although the force fields disrupted the initial movements, subjects were able to adapt to the novel dynamics and learned to produce straight trajectories. After adaptation, the endpoint stiffness of the arm was measured at the midpoint of the movement. The stiffness had been selectively modified in the direction of the instability. The stiffness in the stable direction was relatively unchanged from that measured during movements in a null force field prior to exposure to the unstable force field. This impedance modification was achieved without changes in force and torque. The overall stiffness of the arm and environment in the direction of instability was adapted to the force field strength such that it remained equivalent to that of the null force field. This suggests that the CNS attempts both to maintain a minimum level of stability and minimize energy expenditure.

Electrically conductive composites that contain conductive filler dispersed in an insulating polymer matrix are usually prepared by the vigorous mixing of the components. This affects the structure of the filler particles and thereby the properties of the composite. It is shown that by careful mixing nano-scale features on the surface of the filler particles can be retained. The fillers used possess sharp surface protrusions similar to the tips used in scanning tunnelling microscopy. The electric field strength at these tips is very large and results in field assisted (Fowler-Nordheim) tunnelling. In addition the polymer matrix intimately coats the filler particles and the particles do not come into direct physical contact. This prevents the formation of chains of filler particles in close contact as the filler content increases. In consequence the composite has an extremely high resistance even at filler loadings above the expected percolation threshold. The retention of filler particle morphology and the presence of an insulating polymer layer between them endow the composite with a number of unusual properties. These are presented here together with appropriate physical models. © 2005 IOP Publishing Ltd.

A simple composite design methodology has been developed from the basic principles of composite component failure. This design approach applies the principles of stress field matching to develop suitable reinforcement patterns around three-dimensional details such as lugs in mechanical components. The resulting patterns are essentially curvilinear orthogonal meshes, adjusted to meet the restrictions imposed by geometric restraints and the intended manufacturing process. Whilst the principles behind the design methodology can be applied to components produced by differing manufacturing processes, the results found from looking at simple generic example problems suggest a realistic and practical generic manufacturing approach. The underlying principles of the design methodology are described and simple analyses are used to help illustrate both the methodology and how such components behave. These analyses suggest it is possible to replace high-strength steel lugs with composite components whose strength-to-weight ratio is some 4-5 times better. © 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. We report on the fabrication and field emission of carbon nanotube lateral field emitters. Due to its high aspect ratio and mechanical strength, we use vertically aligned multi-wall carbon nanotubes prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition as cathodes, which makes the fabrication of cantilever type lateral field emitters possible. The emission characteristics show that the field emission initiates at 11-17 V. The device has high geometrical enhancement factors (9.3 × 106 cm-1) compared to standard Spindt tips, which may be due to increased field concentration at the nanotube tip and the close proximity of the anode (<1 μm). The relative ease of fabrication compared to vertical field emitters and enhanced field emission characteristics observed makes the carbon nanotube lateral field emitter a good candidate for future integrated nano-electronic devices.

External, prestressed carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) straps can be used to enhance the shear strength of existing reinforced concrete beams. In order to effectively design a strengthening system, a rational predictive theory is required. The current work investigates the ability of the modified compression field theory (MCFT) to predict the behavior of rectangular strap strengthened beams where the discrete CFRP strap forces are approximated as a uniform vertical stress. An unstrengthened control beam and two strengthened beams were tested to verify the predictions. The experimental results suggest that the MCFT could predict the general response of a strengthened beam with a uniform strap spacing < 0.9d. However, whereas the strengthened beams failed in shear, the MCFT predicted flexural failures. It is proposed that a different compression softening model or the inclusion of a crack width limit is required to reflect the onset of shear failures in the strengthened beams.

The performance of a semiconducting carbon nanotube (CNT) is assessed and tabulated for parameters against those of a metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET). Both CNT and MOSFET models considered agree well with the trends in the available experimental data. The results obtained show that nanotubes can significantly reduce the drain-induced barrier lowering effect and subthreshold swing in silicon channel replacement while sustaining smaller channel area at higher current density. Performance metrics of both devices such as current drive strength, current on-off ratio (Ion/Ioff), energy-delay product, and power-delay product for logic gates, namely NAND and NOR, are presented. Design rules used for carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNTFETs) are compatible with the 45-nm MOSFET technology. The parasitics associated with interconnects are also incorporated in the model. Interconnects can affect the propagation delay in a CNTFET. Smaller length interconnects result in higher cutoff frequency. © 2012 Tan et al.

The flow field of a lab-scale model gas turbine swirl burner was characterised using particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) at atmospheric condition. The swirl burner consists of an axial swirler, a twin-fluid atomizer and a quartz tube as combustor wall. The main non-reacting swirling air flow without spray was compared to swirl flow with spray under unconfined and enclosed conditions. The introduction of liquid fuel spray changes the flow field of the main swirling air flow at the burner outlet where the radial velocity components are enhanced. Under reacting conditions, the enclosure generates a corner recirculation zone that intensifies the strength of the radial velocity. Comparison of the flow fields with a spray flame using diesel and palm biodiesel shows very similar flow fields. The flow field data can be used as validation target for swirl flame modeling. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Shearing rate is among the most important factors affecting the undrained shear strength of clays. In particular, for seismic or storm-wave loading conditions, the shearing rate is much higher than that used in many common laboratory or field tests. The testing program described here evaluates the effect of peripheral velocity on the undrained strength inferred from the shear vane test. The study was conducted on a lightly cemented bentonite-kaolinite mixture manufactured in the laboratory, which possesses many characteristics similar to those of natural materials. Results show that the shear strength increases with increasing peripheral velocity, while the residual shear strength seems to be nearly independent of rotation rate.

The ability of large-grain (RE)Ba2Cu3O7-δ ((RE)BCO; RE = rare earth) bulk superconductors to trap magnetic fields is determined by their critical current. With high trapped fields, however, bulk samples are subject to a relatively large Lorentz force, and their performance is limited primarily by their tensile strength. Consequently, sample reinforcement is the key to performance improvement in these technologically important materials. In this work, we report a trapped field of 17.6 T, the largest reported to date, in a stack of two silver-doped GdBCO superconducting bulk samples, each 25 mm in diameter, fabricated by top-seeded melt growth and reinforced with shrink-fit stainless steel. This sample preparation technique has the advantage of being relatively straightforward and inexpensive to implement, and offers the prospect of easy access to portable, high magnetic fields without any requirement for a sustaining current source. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd.
