In order to disign an airfoil of which maximum lift coefficient (CL max) is not sensitive to location of forced top boundary layer transition. Taking maximizing mean value of CL max and minimizing standard deviation as biobjective, leading edge radius, manximum thickness and its location, maximum camber and its location as deterministic design variables, location of forced top boundary layer transition as stochastic variable, XFOIL as deterministic CFD solver, non-intrusive polynomial chaos as substitute of Monte Carlo method, we completed a robust airfoil design problem. Results demonstrate performance of initial airfoil is enhanced through reducing standard deviation of CL max. Besides, we also know maximum thickness has the most dominating effect on mean value of CL max, location of maximum thickness has the most dominating effect on standard deviation of CL max, maximum camber has a little effect on both mean value and standard deviation, and maximum camber is the only element of which increase can lead increase of mean value and standard deviation at the same time. A balloon tethered at an altitude of 20 km could deliver a particulate cloud leading to global cooling. Tethering a balloon at this altitude poses significant problems with respect to vibration and stability, especially in regions of high wind. No-one has ever proposed, yet alone launched, a balloon at an altitude of 20 km tethered to the ground. Owing to wind, the tether needs to be 23 km in length and is to be fixed to a ship at sea or on land in equatorial regions. Whilst the balloon at 20 km is subject to relatively modest wind conditions, at jet stream altitudes (10km) the tether will experience much higher wind loadings, not only because of the high wind speeds of up to 300 km / hr but also because of the high air density. A tether of circular cross section in these high winds will be subject to horizontal and downward drag forces that would bring the aerostat down. For this reason it is advantageous to consider a self-aligning tether of an aerodynamic cross section whereby it is possible to reduce the drag substantially. One disadvantage of a non-circular tether is the possibility of flutter and galloping instabilities. It is reasonably straightforward to model these phenomena for short lengths of aerofoil, but the situation becomes more complex for a 20 km tensioned tether with large deflection and curvature, variable wind speed, variable air density and variable tension. Analysis using models of infinite length are used to establish the stability at a local scale where the tension, aerodynamic and geometric properties are considered constant. Dispersion curve analysis is useful here. But for dynamics on a long-wavelength scale (several km) then a full non-linear analysis is required. This non-linear model can be used to establish the local values of tension appropriate for the dispersion analysis. This keynote presentation will give some insight into these issues.

We use laser beams with radial and azimuthal polarization to optically trap carbon nanotubes. We measure force constants and trap parameters as a function of power showing improved axial trapping efficiency with respect to linearly polarized beams. The analysis of the thermal fluctuations highlights a significant change in the optical trapping potential when using cylindrical vector beams. This enables the use of polarization states to shape optical traps according to the particle geometry, as well as paving the way to nanoprobe-based photonic force microscopy with increased performance compared to a standard linearly polarized configuration. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

In this paper, we demonstrate synchronization of two electrically coupled MEMS oscillators incorporating nearly identical silicon tuning fork microresonators. It is seen that as the output of the oscillators are coupled, they exhibit a synchronized response wherein the output amplitudes and signal-to-noise ratios of the two oscillators are improved relative to the case where the two oscillators are uncoupled. The observed output frequency of each oscillator before coupling is 219402.4 Hz and 219403.6 Hz respectively. In contrast, when the oscillators are driven simultaneously, they lock at a common output frequency of 219401.3 Hz and their outputs are found to be out-of-phase with respect to each other. A 6 dBm gain in output power and a reduction in the phase fluctuations of the output signal are observed for the coupled oscillators compared to the case when the oscillators are uncoupled. © 2011 IEEE.

The structural properties and the room temperature luminescence of Er2O3 thin films deposited by RF magnetron sputtering have been studied. Films characterized by good morphological properties have been obtained by using a SiO2 interlayer between the film and the Si substrate. The evolution of the properties of the Er2O3 films due to rapid thermal annealing processes in O2 ambient performed at temperatures in the range 800-1200 °C has been investigated in details. The existence of well-defined annealing conditions (temperature of 1100 °C or higher) allowing to avoid the occurrence of extensive chemical reactions with the oxidized substrate has been demonstrated and an increase of the photoluminescence (PL) intensity by about a factor of 40 with respect to the as deposited material has been observed. The enhanced efficiency of the photon emission process has been correlated with the longer lifetime of the PL signal. The same annealing processes are less effective when Er2O3 is deposited on Si. In this latter case interfacial reactions and pit formation occur, leading to a material characterized by stronger non-radiative phenomena that limit the PL efficiency. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. The structural properties and the room temperature luminescence of Er 2O3 thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering have been studied. In spite of the well-known high reactivity of rare earth oxides towards silicon, films characterized by good morphological properties have been obtained by using a SiO2 interlayer between the film and the silicon substrate. The evolution of the properties of the Er2O3 films due to thermal annealing processes in oxygen ambient performed at temperatures in the range of 800-1200°C has been investigated in detail. The existence of well defined annealing conditions (rapid treatments at a temperature of 1100°C or higher) allowing to avoid the occurrence of extensive chemical reactions with the oxidized substrate has been demonstrated; under these conditions, the thermal process has a beneficial effect on both structural and optical properties of the film, and an increase of the photoluminescence (PL) intensity by about a factor of 40 with respect to the as-deposited material has been observed. The enhanced efficiency of the photon emission process has been correlated with the longer lifetime of the PL signal. Finally, the conditions leading to a reaction of Er2O3 with the substrate have been also identified, and evidences about the formation of silicate-like phases have been collected. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.
