The optimal control of problems that are constrained by partial differential equations with uncertainties and with uncertain controls is addressed. The Lagrangian that defines the problem is postulated in terms of stochastic functions, with the control function possibly decomposed into an unknown deterministic component and a known zero-mean stochastic component. The extra freedom provided by the stochastic dimension in defining cost functionals is explored, demonstrating the scope for controlling statistical aspects of the system response. One-shot stochastic finite element methods are used to find approximate solutions to control problems. It is shown that applying the stochastic collocation finite element method to the formulated problem leads to a coupling between stochastic collocation points when a deterministic optimal control is considered or when moments are included in the cost functional, thereby forgoing the primary advantage of the collocation method over the stochastic Galerkin method for the considered problem. The application of the presented methods is demonstrated through a number of numerical examples. The presented framework is sufficiently general to also consider a class of inverse problems, and numerical examples of this type are also presented. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

Several equations of state (EOS) have been incorporated into a novel algorithm to solve a system of multi-phase equations in which all phases are assumed to be compressible to varying degrees. The EOSs are used to both supply functional relationships to couple the conservative variables to the primitive variables and to calculate accurately thermodynamic quantities of interest, such as the speed of sound. Each EOS has a defined balance of accuracy, robustness and computational speed; selection of an appropriate EOS is generally problem-dependent. This work employs an AUSM+-up method for accurate discretisation of the convective flux terms with modified low-Mach number dissipation for added robustness of the solver. In this paper we show a newly-developed time-marching formulation for temporal discretisation of the governing equations with incorporated time-dependent source terms, as well as considering the system of eigenvalues that render the governing equations hyperbolic.

We present the Unified Form Language (UFL), which is a domain-specific language for representing weak formulations of partial differential equations with a view to numerical approximation. Features of UFL include support for variational forms and functionals, automatic differentiation of forms and expressions, arbitrary function space hierarchies formultifield problems, general differential operators and flexible tensor algebra. With these features, UFL has been used to effortlessly express finite element methods for complex systems of partial differential equations in near-mathematical notation, resulting in compact, intuitive and readable programs. We present in this work the language and its construction. An implementation of UFL is freely available as an open-source software library. The library generates abstract syntax tree representations of variational problems, which are used by other software libraries to generate concrete low-level implementations. Some application examples are presented and libraries that support UFL are highlighted. © 2014 ACM.

This paper presents a numerical method for the simulation of flow in turbomachinery blade rows using a solution-adaptive mesh methodology. The fully three-dimensional, compressible, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with k-ε turbulence modeling (and low Reynolds number damping terms) are solved on an unstructured mesh formed from tetrahedral finite volumes. At stages in the solution, mesh refinement is carried out based on flagging cell faces with either a fractional variation of a chosen variable (like Mach number) greater than a given threshold or with a mean value of the chosen variable within a given range. Several solutions are presented, including that for the highly three-dimensional flow associated with the corner stall and secondary flow in a transonic compressor cascade, to demonstrate the potential of the new method.

The scattering of sound from a point source by a Rankine vortex is investigated numerically by solving the Euler equations with the novel high-resolution CABARET method. For several Mach numbers of the vortex, the time-average amplitudes of the scattered field obtained from the numerical modeling are compared with the theoretical scaling laws' predictions. We present a fixed-grid finite element technique for fluid-structure interaction problems involving incompressible viscous flows and thin structures. The flow equations are discretised with isoparametric b-spline basis functions defined on a logically Cartesian grid. In addition, the previously proposed subdivision-stabilisation technique is used to ensure inf-sup stability. The beam equations are discretised with b-splines and the shell equations with subdivision basis functions, both leading to a rotation-free formulation. The interface conditions between the fluid and the structure are enforced with the Nitsche technique. The resulting coupled system of equations is solved with a Dirichlet-Robin partitioning scheme, and the fluid equations are solved with a pressure-correction method. Auxiliary techniques employed for improving numerical robustness include the level-set based implicit representation of the structure interface on the fluid grid, a cut-cell integration algorithm based on marching tetrahedra and the conservative data transfer between the fluid and structure discretisations. A number of verification and validation examples, primarily motivated by animal locomotion in air or water, demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of our approach. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In the present paper we consider second order compact upwind schemes with a space split time derivative (CABARET) applied to one-dimensional compressible gas flows. As opposed to the conventional approach associated with incorporating adjacent space cells we use information from adjacent time layer to improve the solution accuracy. Taking the first order Roe scheme as the basis we develop a few higher (i.e. second within regions of smooth solutions) order accurate difference schemes. One of them (CABARET3) is formulated in a two-time-layer form, which makes it most simple and robust. Supersonic and subsonic shock-tube tests are used to compare the new schemes with several well-known second-order TVD schemes. In particular, it is shown that CABARET3 is notably more accurate than the standard second-order Roe scheme with MUSCL flux splitting.
