in this contribution we discuss a stochastic framework for air traffic conflict resolution. The conflict resolution task is posed as the problem of optimizing an expected value criterion. The safety of the flights, and in particular conflict resolution for separation assurance, is one of the main tasks of Air Traffic Control. Conflict resolution requires decision making in the face of the considerable levels of uncertainty inherent in the motion of aircraft. We present a Monte Carlo framework for conflict resolution which allows one to take into account such levels of uncertainty through the use of a stochastic simulator. A simulation example inspired by current air traffic control practice illustrates the proposed conflict resolution strategy. The extreme sensitivity of Sm/Ba at high temperature in air becomes an obstacle to the fabrication of SmBCO single grains that exhibit stable and reliable superconducting properties. In this research, the superconducting properties of SmBCO single grains fabricated by top seeded melt growth (TSMG) from different batches of commercial SmBa2Cu3O 7-d (Sm-123) precursor powder using different processing atmospheres (air and 0.1% O2 in Ar), different processing methods (isothermal growth and continuous cooling) and different amounts of BaO2 content to suppress Sm/Ba substitution in air have been investigated in an attempt to understand fully the TSMG process for this system. As a result, based on extensive data, a novel and simple, low temperature post-annealing approach is proposed specifically to overcome the sensitivity of Tc to Sm/Ba substitution in order to simplify the fabrication of SmBCO and to increase its reliability with a view to the practical processing of these materials. Initial processing trials have been performed successfully to demonstrate the viability of the novel post-annealing process. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Climate change is becoming a serious issue for the construction industry, since the time scales at which climate change takes place can be expected to show a true impact on the thermal performance of buildings and HVAC systems. In predicting this future building performance by means of building simulation, the underlying assumptions regarding thermal comfort conditions and the related heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) control set points become important. This article studies the thermal performance of a reference office building with mixedmode ventilation in the UK, using static and adaptive thermal approaches, for a series of time horizons (2020, 2050 and 2080). Results demonstrate the importance of the implementation of adaptive thermal comfort models, and underpin the case for its use in climate change impact studies. Adaptive thermal comfort can also be used by building designers to make buildings more resilient towards change. © 2010 International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA).

This paper provides a direct comparison of two stochastic optimisation techniques (Markov Chain Monte Carlo and Sequential Monte Carlo) when applied to the problem of conflict resolution and aircraft trajectory control in air traffic management. The two methods are then also compared to another existing technique of Mixed-Integer Linear Programming which is also popular in distributed control. © 2011 IFAC.
