Hybrid nanostructured materials can exhibit different properties than their constituent components, and can enable decoupled engineering of energy conversion and transport functions. Novel means of building hybrid assemblies of crystalline C 60 and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are presented, wherein aligned CNT films direct the crystallization and orientation of C 60 rods from solution. In these hybrid films, the C 60 rods are oriented parallel to the direction of the CNTs throughout the thickness of the film. High-resolution imaging shows that the crystals incorporate CNTs during growth, yet grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) shows that the crystal structure of the C 60 rods is not perturbed by the CNTs. Growth kinetics of the C 60 rods are enhanced 8-fold on CNTs compared to bare Si, emphasizing the importance of the aligned, porous morphology of the CNT films as well as the selective surface interactions between C 60 and CNTs. Finally, it is shown how hybrid C 60-CNT films can be integrated electrically and employed as UV detectors with a high photoconductive gain and a responsivity of 10 5 A W -1 at low biases (± 0.5 V). The finding that CNTs can induce rapid, directional crystallization of molecules from solution may have broader implications to the science and applications of crystal growth, such as for inorganic nanocrystals, proteins, and synthetic polymers. © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The modern CFD process consists of mesh generation, flow solving and post-processing integrated into an automated workflow. During the last several years we have developed and published research aimed at producing a meshing and geometry editing system, implemented in an end-to-end parallel, scalable manner and capable of automatic handling of large scale, real world applications. The particular focus of this paper is the associated unstructured mesh RANS flow solver and the porting of it to GPU architectures. After briefly describing the solver itself, the special issues associated with porting codes using unstructured data structures are discussed - followed by some application examples. This paper theoretically investigates the application of tuned vibration absorbers and hybrid passive/active inertial actuators to reduce the vibrational responses of plates and shells. The passive/active actuators are initially applied to a simple plate. A model of a submerged hull consisting of a ring stiffened finite cylinder with bulkheads and external fluid loading is then considered. The fluctuating forces from the propeller result in excitation of the low frequency global hull modes. Inertial actuators and tuned vibration absorbers are located at each end of the hull and in circumferential arrays to reduce the hull structural response at its axial resonances. The control performance of the hybrid passive/active inertial actuator, where the passive component is tuned to a structural resonance, is compared to the attenuation achieved by a fully passive tuned vibration absorber. This work shows the potential of using hybrid passive/active inertial actuators to attenuate the global structural responses of a submerged vessel.

We investigated the thermal evolution of end-of-range (EOR) defects in germanium and their impact on junction thermal stability. After solid-phase epitaxial regrowth of a preamorphized germanium layer, EOR defects exhibiting dislocation loop-like contrast behavior are present. These defects disappear during thermal annealing at 400 °C, while boron electrical deactivation occurs. After the whole defect population vanishes, boron reactivation is observed. These results indicate that germanium self-interstitials, released by EOR defects, are the cause of B deactivation. Unlike in Si, the whole deactivation/reactivation cycle in Ge is found to take place while the maximum active B concentration exceeds its solubility limit. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Electron and hole conducting 10-nm-wide polymer morphologies hold great promise for organic electro-optical devices such as solar cells and light emitting diodes. The self-assembly of block-copolymers (BCPs) is often viewed as an efficient way to generate such materials. Here, a functional block copolymer that contains perylene bismide (PBI) side chains which can crystallize via π-π stacking to form an electron conducting microphase is patterned harnessing hierarchical electrohydrodynamic lithography (HEHL). HEHL film destabilization creates a hierarchical structure with three distinct length scales: (1) micrometer-sized polymer pillars, containing (2) a 10-nm BCP microphase morphology that is aligned perpendicular to the substrate surface and (3) on a molecular length scale (0.35-3 nm) PBI π-π-stacks traverse the HEHL-generated plugs in a continuous fashion. The good control over BCP and PBI alignment inside the generated vertical microstructures gives rise to liquid-crystal-like optical dichroism of the HEHL patterned films, and improves the electron conductivity across the film by 3 orders of magnitude. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

We use a resistive-pulse technique to analyze molecular hybrids of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) wrapped in either single-stranded DNA or protein. Electric fields confined in a glass capillary nanopore allow us to probe the physical size and surface properties of molecular hybrids at the single-molecule level. We find that the translocation duration of a macromolecular hybrid is determined by its hydrodynamic size and solution mobility. The event current reveals the effects of ion exclusion by the rod-shaped hybrids and possible effects due to temporary polarization of the SWNT core. Our results pave the way to direct sensing of small DNA or protein molecules in a large unmodified solid-state nanopore by using nanofilaments as carriers. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

We experimentally demonstrate a self-aligned approach for the fabrication of nanoscale hybrid silicon-plasmonic waveguide fabricated by local oxidation of silicon (LOCOS). Implementation of the LOCOS technique provides compatibility with standard complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology and allows avoiding lateral misalignment between the silicon waveguide and the upper metallic layer. We directly measured the propagation and the coupling loss of the fabricated hybrid waveguide using a near-field scanning optical microscope. The demonstrated structure provides nanoscale confinement of light together with a reasonable propagation length of ∼100 μm. As such, it is expected to become an important building block in future on-chip optoelectronic circuitry. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.
