This paper looks at active control of the normal shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction (SBLI) using smart flap actuators. The actuators are manufactured by bonding piezoelectric material to an inert substrate to control the bleed/suction rate through a plenum chamber. The cavity provides communication of signals across the shock, allowing rapid thickening of the boundary layer approaching the shock, which splits into a series of weaker shocks forming a lambda shock foot, reducing wave drag. Active control allows optimum control of the interaction, as it would be capable of positioning the control region around the original shock position and control the rate of mass transfer. © 2004 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. Previous numerical simulations have shown that vortex breakdown starts with the formation of a steady axisymmetric bubble and that an unsteady spiralling mode then develops on top of this.We study how this spiral mode of vortex breakdown might be suppressed or promoted. We use a Lagrangian approach to identify regions of the flow which are sensitive to small open-loop steady and unsteady (harmonic) forces. We find these regions to be upstream of the vortex breakdown bubble. We investigate passive control using a small axisymmetric control ring. In this case, the steady and unsteady control forces are caused by the drag force on the control ring. We find a narrow region upstream of the bubble where the control ring will stabilise the flow and we verify this using numerical simulations. © 2012 IEEE.

We propose a new approach for quantifying regions of interest (ROIs) in medical image data. Rotationally invariant shape descriptors (ISDs) were applied to 3D brain regions extracted from MRI scans of 5 Parkinson's patients and 10 control subjects. We concentrated on the thalamus and the caudate nucleus since prior studies have suggested they are affected in Parkinson's disease (PD). In the caudate, both the ISD and volumetric analyses found significant differences between control and PD subjects. The ISD analysis however revealed additional differences between the left and right caudate nuclei in both control and PD subjects. In the thalamus, the volumetric analysis showed significant differences between PD and control subjects, while ISD analysis found significant differences between the left and right thalami in control subjects but not in PD patients, implying disease-induced shape changes. These results suggest that employing ISDs for ROI characterization both complements and extends traditional volumetric analyses. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper develops a technique for improving the region of attraction of a robust variable horizon model predictive controller. It considers a constrained discrete-time linear system acted upon by a bounded, but unknown time-varying state disturbance. Using constraint tightening for robustness, it is shown how the tightening policy, parameterised as direct feedback on the disturbance, can be optimised to increase the volume of an inner approximation to the controller's true region of attraction. Numerical examples demonstrate the benefits of the policy in increasing region of attraction volume and decreasing the maximum prediction horizon length. © 2012 IEEE.

Genetic variation at the serotonin transporter-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) is associated with altered amygdala reactivity and lack of prefrontal regulatory control. Similar regions mediate decision-making biases driven by contextual cues and ambiguity, for example the "framing effect." We hypothesized that individuals hemozygous for the short (s) allele at the 5-HTTLPR would be more susceptible to framing. Participants, selected as homozygous for either the long (la) or s allele, performed a decision-making task where they made choices between receiving an amount of money for certain and taking a gamble. A strong bias was evident toward choosing the certain option when the option was phrased in terms of gains and toward gambling when the decision was phrased in terms of losses (the frame effect). Critically, this bias was significantly greater in the ss group compared with the lala group. In simultaneously acquired functional magnetic resonance imaging data, the ss group showed greater amygdala during choices made in accord, compared with those made counter to the frame, an effect not seen in the lala group. These differences were also mirrored by differences in anterior cingulate-amygdala coupling between the genotype groups during decision making. Specifically, lala participants showed increased coupling during choices made counter to, relative to those made in accord with, the frame, with no such effect evident in ss participants. These data suggest that genetically mediated differences in prefrontal-amygdala interactions underpin interindividual differences in economic decision making.

Operation of induction machines in the high-speed and/or high-torque range requires field-weakening to comply with voltage and current physical limitations. This paper presents an anti-windup approach to this problem: rather than developing an ad-hoc field weakening strategy in the high-speed region, we equip an unconstrained vector-control design with an anti-windup module that automatically adjusts the current and flux set-points so that voltage and current constraints are satisfied at every operating point. The anti-windup module includes a feedforward modification of the set point aimed at maximizing the available torque in steady-state and a feedback modification of the controller based on an internal model-based antiwindup scheme. This paper includes a complete stability analysis of the proposed solution and presents encouraging experimental results on an industrial drive. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper addresses the question relative to the role of sensory feedback in rhythmic tasks. We study the properties of a sinusoidally vibrating wedge-billiard as a model for 2-D bounce juggling. If this wedge is actuated with an harmonic sinusoidal input, it has been shown that some periodic orbits are exponentially stable. This paper explores an intuitive method to enlarge the parametric stability region of the simplest of these orbits. Accurate processing of timing is proven to be an important key to achieve frequency-locking in rhythmic tasks. © 2005 IEEE.

The vortical wake structure produced by a three-dimensional shock control bump (SCB) is thought to be useful for controlling transonic buffet on airfoils. However, at present the vorticity produced is relatively weak and the production mechanism is not well understood. Using a combined experimental and computational approach, a preliminary investigation on the wake vorticity for different bump geometries has been carried out. The structure of the wake for on and off-design conditions are considered, and the effects on the downstream boundary layer demonstrated. Three main vortical structures are observed: a primary vortex pair, weak inter-bump vortices and shear flow in the lambda-shock region. The effect of pressure gradients on vortex strength is examined and it is found that spanwise pressure gradients on the front section of the bump are the most significant parameter influencing vortex strength. © 2013 by S.P. In recent literature, ℓ1-regularised MPC, or ℓasso-MPC, has been recommended for control tasks involving complex requirements on the control signals, for instance, the simultaneous solution of regulation and sharp control allocation for redundantly-actuated systems. This is due to the implicit thresholding ability of LASSO regression. In this paper, a stabilising terminal cost featuring a mixed ℓ1/ℓ2 2 penalty is presented. Then, a candidate terminal controller is computed, with the aim of enlarging the region of attraction. © 2013 EUCA.

Vector control provides stability and performance when applied to the brushless doubly-fed machine, however cross-coupling effects can arise between inputs and outputs. To address these effects, a procedure is proposed to both visualize and minimize the cross-coupling by means of steady-state mapping and a re-alignment of the dq reference frame. With this method implemented, gain-response tests show improved decoupling across the operating region. © 2013 EUCA.

A method is proposed for on-line reconfiguration of the terminal constraint used to provide theoretical nominal stability guarantees in linear model predictive control (MPC). By parameterising the terminal constraint, its complete reconstruction is avoided when input constraints are modified to accommodate faults. To enlarge the region of feasibility of the terminal control law for a certain class of input faults with redundantly actuated plants, the linear terminal controller is defined in terms of virtual commands. A suitable terminal cost weighting for the reconfigurable MPC is obtained by means of an upper bound on the cost for all feasible realisations of the virtual commands from the terminal controller. Conditions are proposed that guarantee feasibility recovery for a defined subset of faults. The proposed method is demonstrated by means of a numerical example. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The control of a class of combustion systems, suceptible to damage from self-excited combustion oscillations, is considered. An adaptive stable controller, called Self-Tuning Regulator (STR), has recently been developed, which meets the apparently contradictory challenge of relying as little as possible on a particular combustion model while providing some guarantee that the controller will cause no harm. The controller injects some fuel unsteadily into the burning region, thereby altering the heat release, in response to an input signal detecting the oscillation. This paper focuses on an extension of the STR design, when, due to stringent emission requirements and to the danger of flame extension, the amount of fuel used for control is limited in amplitude. A Lyapunov stability analysis is used to prove the stability of the modified STR when the saturation constraint is imposed. The practical implementation of the modified STR remains straightforward, and simulation results, based on the nonlinear premixed flame model developed by Dowling, show that in the presence of a saturation constraint, the self-excited oscillations are damped more rapidly with the modified STR than with the original STR. © 2001 by S. This paper presents an achievable second-order rate region for the discrete memoryless multiple-access channel. The result is obtained using a random-coding ensemble in which each user's codebook contains codewords of a fixed composition. It is shown that this ensemble performs at least as well as i.i.d. random coding in terms of second-order asymptotics, and an example is given where a strict improvement is observed. © 2013 IEEE.
