The technique of Subcarrier Modulation is assessed by statistical analysis as a viable solution to broadband data transmission over dispersion limited multimode fibre. It is shown that a suitable passband region for transmission of 2.5 Gb/s channels exists at 5 GHz in greater than 80% of worst-case fibres under standard SMF/MMF launch conditions. ©2002 Optical Society of America.

Two case histories on deep excavation of marine clay are used to study the use of a decision-making tool based on a new deign method called the Mobilized Strength Design (MSD) method which allows the designer to use a simple method of predicting ground displacements during deep excavation. This application can approximately satisfy both safety and serviceability requirements by predicting stresses and displacements under working conditions by introducing the concept of "Mobilizable soil strength". The new method accommodates a number of features which are important to design of underground construction between retaining walls, including different deformation mechanism in different stages of excavation. The influence of wall depth, wall flexibility and stratified ground are the major focus of this paper. These developments should make it possible for a design engineer to take informed decisions on the influence of wall stiffness, or on the need for a jet-grouted base slab, for example, without having to conduct project-specific Finite Element Analysis.

A computer can assist the process of design by analogy by recording past designs. The experience these represent could be much wider than that of designers using the system, who therefore need to identify potential cases of interest. If the computer assists with this lookup, the designers can concentrate on the more interesting aspect of extracting and using the ideas which are found. However, as the knowledge base grows it becomes ever harder to find relevant cases using a keyword indexing scheme without knowing precisely what to look for. Therefore a more flexible searching system is needed.
If a similarity measure can be defined for the features of the designs, then it is possible to match and cluster them. Using a simple measure like co-occurrence of features within a particular case would allow this to happen without human intervention, which is tedious and time- consuming. Any knowledge that is acquired about how features are related to each other will be very shallow: it is not intended as a cognitive model for how humans understand, learn, or retrieve information, but more an attempt to make effective, efficient use of the information available. The question remains of whether such shallow knowledge is sufficient for the task.
A system to retrieve information from a large database is described. It uses co-occurrences to relate keywords to each other, and then extends search queries with similar words. This seems to make relevant material more accessible, providing hope that this retrieval technique can be applied to a broader knowledge base.

Silicon Carbide Bipolar Junction Transistors require a continuous base current in the on-state. This base current is usually made constant and is corresponding to the maximum collector current and maximum junction temperature that is foreseen in a certain application. In this paper, a discretized proportional base driver is proposed which will reduce, for the right application, the steady-state power consumption of the base driver. The operation of the proposed base driver has been verified experimentally, driving a 1200V/40A SiC BJT in a DC-DC boost converter. In order to determine the potential reduction of the power consumption of the base driver, a case with a dc-dc converter in an ideal electric vehicle driving the new European drive cycle has been investigated. It is found that the steady-state power consumption of the base driver can be reduced by approximately 63 %. The total reduction of the driver consumption is 2816 J during the drive cycle, which is slightly more than the total on-state losses for the SiC BJTs used in the converter. © 2013 IEEE.

Silicon carbide (SiC) bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) require a continuous base current in the on-state. This base current is usually made constant and is corresponding to the maximum collector current and maximum junction temperature that is foreseen in a certain application. In this paper, a discretized proportional base driver is proposed which will reduce, for the right application, the steady-state power consumption of the base driver. The operation of the proposed base driver has been verified experimentally, driving a 1200-V/40-A SiC BJT in a dc-dc boost converter. In order to determine the potential reduction of the power consumption of the base driver, a case with a dc-dc converter in an ideal electric vehicle driving the new European drive cycle has been investigated. It is found that the steady-state power consumption of the base driver can be reduced by approximately 60%. The total reduction of the driver consumption is 3459 J during the drive cycle, which is slightly more than the total on-state losses for the SiC BJTs used in the converter. © 2013 IEEE.
