Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) pattern formation in carbon nanotube-polymer composite films yields well-defined patterns on the micrometer scale along with the alignment of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) within these patterns. Conductive pathways in nanotube networks formed during EHD patterning of nanocomposite films results in a substantial increase in the composites' conductivity at loadings exceeding the percolation threshold. The degree of nanotube alignment can be tuned by adjusting the EHD parameters and the degree of alignment is mirrored by the conductivity across the film. Using etching techniques or by embedding relatively long nanotubes, patterned surfaces decorated by CNT brushes were generated. Copyright © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.
Er3+-doped glass-polymer composite thin films fabricated using combinatorial pulsed laser deposition

Siloxane Polymer exhibits low loss in the 800-1500 nm range which varies between 0.01 and 0.66 dB cm1. It is for such low loss the material is one of the most promising candidates in the application of engineering passive and active optical devices [1, 2]. However, current polymer fabrication techniques do not provide a methodology which allows high structurally solubility of Er3+ ions in siloxane matrix. To address this problem, Yang et al.[3] demonstrated a channel waveguide amplifier with Nd 3+-complex doped polymer, whilst Wong and co-workers[4] employed Yb3+ and Er3+ co-doped polymer hosts for increasing the gain. In some recent research we demonstrated pulsed laser deposition of Er-doped tellurite glass thin films on siloxane polymer coated silica substrates[5]. Here an alternative methodology for multilayer polymer-glass composite thin films using Er3+ - Yb3+ co-doped phosphate modified tellurite (PT) glass and siloxane polymer is proposed by adopting combinatorial pulsed laser deposition (PLD). © 2011 IEEE.

Thin films of nano-composite Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) superconductors containing nano-sized, non-superconducting particles of Y2Ba 4CuMOx (M-2411 with M = Ag and Nb) have been prepared by the PLD technique. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) has been used to analyze the crystallographic orientation of nano-particles embedded in the film microstructure. The superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 (Y-123) phase matrix is textured with a dominant (001) orientation for all samples, whereas the M-2411 phase exhibits a random orientation. Angular critical current measurements at various temperature (T) and applied magnetic field (B) have been performed on thin films containing different concentration of the M-2411 second phase. An increase in critical current density J c at T < 77 K and B < 6 T is observed for samples with low concentration of the second phase (2 mol % M-2411). Films containing 5 mol % Ag-2411 exhibit lower Jc than pure Y-123 thin films at all fields and temperatures. Samples with 5 mol % Nb-2411 show higher Jc(B) than phase pure Y-123 thin films for T < 77 K. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The conversion of silver nanoparticle (NP) paste films into highly conductive films at low sintering temperature is an important requirement for the developing areas of additive fabrication and printed electronics. Ag NPs with a diameter of ∼10 nm were prepared via an improved chemical process to produce viscous paste with a high wt%. The paste consisted of as-prepared Ag NP and an organic vehicle of ethylcellulose that was deposited on glass and Si substrates using a contact lithographic technique. The morphology and conductivity of the imprinted paste film were measured as a function of sintering temperature, sintering time and the percentage ratio of Ag NP and ethylcellulose. The morphology and conductivity were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a two-point probe electrical conductivity measurement. The results show that the imprinted films were efficiently converted into conducting states when exposed to sintering temperature in the range of 200-240 °C, this temperature is lower than the previously reported values for Ag paste. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Using spcctroscopic ellipsometry (SE), we have measured the optical properties and optical gaps of a series of amorphous carbon (a-C) films ∼ 100-300 Å thick, prepared using a filtered beam of C+ ions from a cathodic arc. Such films exhibit a wide range of sp3-bonded carbon contents from 20 to 76 at.%, as measured by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The Taue optical gaps of the a-C films increase monotonically from 0.65 eV for 20 at.% sp3 C to 2.25 eV for 76 at.% sp3 C. Spectra in the ellipsometric angles (1.5-5 eV) have been analyzed using different effective medium theories (EMTs) applying a simplified optical model for the dielectric function of a-C, assuming a composite material with sp2 C and sp3 C components. The most widely used EMT, namely that of Bruggeman (with three-dimensionally isotropic screening), yields atomic fractions of sp3 C that correlate monotonically with those obtained from EELS. The results of the SE analysis, however, range from 10 to 25 at.% higher than those from EELS. In fact, we have found that the volume percent sp3 C from SE using the Bruggeman EMT shows good numerical agreement with the atomic percent sp3 C from EELS. The SE-EELS discrepancy has been reduced by using an optical model in which the dielectric function of the a-C is determined as a volume-fraction-weighted average of the dielectric functions of the sp2 C and sp3 C components. © 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

Using spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), we have measured the optical properties of amorphous carbon (a-C) films ∼ 10-30 nm thick prepared using a filtered beam of C+ ions from a cathodic arc. Such films exhibit a wide range of sp3-bonded carbon contents from 20 to 76 at.% as measured by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and a range of optical gaps from 0.65 eV (20 at.% sp3 C) to 2.25 eV (76 at.% sp3 C) as measured by SE. SE data from 1.5 to 5 eV have been analyzed by applying the most widely used effective medium theory (EMT) namely that of Bruggeman with isotropic screening, assuming a model of the material as a composite with sp2 C and sp3 C components. Although the atomic fractions of sp3 C deduced by SE with the Bruggeman EMT correlate monotonically with those obtained by EELS, the SE results range from 10 to 25 at.% higher. The possible origins of this discrepancy are discussed within the framework of an optical composite. Improved agreement between SE and EELS is obtained by employing a simple form for the EMT, in which the effective dielectric function is determined as a volume-fraction-weighted average of the dielectric functions of the two components. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
