Conventional alkali-activated slag (AAS) cements suffer from significant drying shrinkage which hinders their widespread application. This paper investigates the potential of using commercial reactive MgO to reduce the drying shrinkage of AAS. Two different reactive MgOs were added at a content of 2.5-7.5 wt% of the slag, which was activated by sodium hydroxide and water-glass. The strength and the drying shrinkage of those reactive MgO modified AAS (MAAS) pastes were measured up to 90 days. It is found that MgO with high reactivity accelerated the early hydration of AAS, while MgO with medium reactivity had little effect. The drying shrinkage was significantly reduced by highly reactive MgO but it also generated severe cracking under the dry condition. On the other hand, medium-reactive MgO only showed observable shrinkage-reducing effect after one month, but the cement soundness was improved. The hydration products, analysed by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy techniques, showed that Mg was mainly incorporated in the hydrotalcite-like phases. It is concluded that the curing conditions and the time of hydrotalcite-like phases formation and their quantity are crucial to the developed strength and shrinkage reduction properties of MAAS, which are highly dependent on the reactivity and content of reactive MgO. According to a recent report by the European Commission, within the European Union, the construction and demolition wastes come to at least 450 million tons per year. Roughly 75% of the waste is disposed to landfill, despite its major recycling potential. The bulk constituents of demolition debris are concrete (50-55%) and masonry (30-40%) with only small percentages of other materials such as metals, glass and timber. In Cyprus, at present, recycling of waste materials is practically inexistent and almost the entire demolition waste products are disposed in landfill sites, with all possible economic, technical and environmental impacts. This research paper presents the evaluation and the effective reuse of waste construction materials, such as recycled lime powder (RLP) and recycled concrete aggregates (RCA), disposed to landfill sites in Cyprus, due to the lack of a lucid recycling policy and knowledge. Results show that both RLP and RCA have the potential to produce good quality and robust concrete mixtures both in terms of mechanical and durability performance. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The present study intends to evaluate the sensitivity of self-compacting concrete (SCC) mixtures, cast in two different laboratories of the European Union, with a focus on rheological parameters, mechanical characteristics and durability properties. Six SCC mixtures with different water-to-binder ratios and silica fume levels of cement replacement and two normally vibrated concrete (NVC) mixtures have been compared. It has been found that the reproducibility of similar mixtures is possible, when using different constituent materials that conform to the European Standards. Comparable rheological, mechanical and durability properties can be achieved. Open porosity and sorptivity appear to be more sensitive than chloride penetrability. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Although self compacting concrete (SCC) is currently used in many countries, there is a fundamental lack of the intrinsic durability of the material itself. This article presents the outcomes from a research program on principal indicators that define the durability of SCC (sorptivity, porosity and chloride ion permeability) and compares these indicators with the corresponding parameters of conventional concrete. The results show, for the first time, that there is a correlation between the various durability indicators for the specific filler additives used in the mix designs incorporated in this paper. Such a correlation may be used to assess the durability of SCC without the need to rely on time consuming artificial weathering experimental procedures. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Excavation works in urban areas require a preliminary risk damage assessment. In historical cities, the prediction of building response to settlements is necessary to reduce the risk of damage of the architectural heritage. The current method used to predict the building damage due to ground deformations is the Limiting Tensile Strain Method (LTSM). In this approach the building is modelled as an elastic beam subjected to imposed Greenfield settlements and the induced tensile strains are compared with a limit value for the material. These assumptions can lead to a non realistic evaluation of the damage. In this paper, the possibility to apply a settlement risk assessment derived from the seismic vulnerability approach is considered. The parameters that influence the structural response to settlements can be defined through numerical analyses which take into account the nonlinear behaviour of masonry and the soil-structure interaction. The effects of factors like material quality, geometry of the structure, amount of openings, type of foundation or the actual state of preservation can be included in a global vulnerability index, which should indicate the building susceptibility to damage by differential settlements of a given magnitude. Vulnerability curves will represent the expected damage of each vulnerability class of building as a function of the settlement.

A new liquid crystal device structure has been developed using a vertically grown Multi-Wall Carbon NanoTube (MWCNT) as a 3D electrode structure, which allows complicated phase only hologram to be displayed using conventional liquid crystal materials. The nanotubes act as an individual electrode sites that generate an electric field profile, dictating the refractive index profile with the liquid crystal cell. Changing the electric field applied makes it possible to tune the properties to modulate the light in an ideal kinoform. A perfect 3D image can be generated by a computer generated hologram by using the diffraction of the light from the hologram pixels to create an optical wave front that appears to come from 3D object. A multilevel phase modulating device based on nematic LC's is also under progress, which will be used with the LC/CNT devices on an LCOS backplane to project a full 3D image from the kinoform.

Usually, firms that produce innovative global products are discussed within the context of developed countries. New ventures in developing countries are typically viewed as low-cost product providers that generate technologically similar products to those produced by developed economies. However, this paper argues that some Chinese university spin-outs (USOs), although rare, have adopted a novel 'catch-up' strategy to build global products on the basis of indigenous platform technologies. This paper attempts to develop a conceptual framework to address the question: how do these specific Chinese USOs develop their innovation capabilities to build global products? In order to explore the idiosyncrasies of the specific USOs, this paper uses the multiple case studies method. The primary data sources are accessed through semi-structured interviews. In addition, archival data and other materials are used as secondary sources. The study analyses the configuration of capabilities that are needed for idiosyncratic growth, and maps them to the globalisation processes. This paper provides a strategic 'roadmap' as an explanatory guide to entrepreneurs, policy makers and investors to better understand the phenomena. © 2014 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
