One style does not fit all

The different types of outsourcing and the management requirements for each of them are discussed. An outsourcing has a high strategic importance to the buying company when it is aligned with the organization's long term strategies and when its results are either positive or negative. Functional outsourcings are characterized by both low strategic importance and financial impact, and the products/services that fall in this category belong to support activities which are highly standardized. Leverage outsourcings are those that have a low strategic importance, but high financial impact to the outsourcer, and they concentrate on operational aspects, leaving strategic issues.

All optical mode-multiplexing using holography and multimode fiber couplers

A spatial light modulator at the transmitter is used in conjunction with a standard multimode coupler at the receiver to modally multiplex 2 × 12.5 Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero channels using direct detection over 2 km of 940 MHz OM2 fiber without electronic processing. The wavelength dependence of this technique over a 4.5 THz band is also investigated. © 2012 IEEE.

A microbeam RBS analysis of low temperature direct-write inkjet deposited copper

Quantitative microbeam Rutherford backscattering (RBS) analysis with a 1.5 MeV 4He+ beam has determined limits on the purity of copper deposited on glass with a novel inkjet process. A tetravinyl silane tetrakisCu(I) 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate (TVST[Cu]hfac) complex was heated to 70 °C and jetted onto the glass substrate through a piezoelectric ceramic print head in droplets about 0.5 mm diameter. The substrate temperature was 150 °C. Solid well-formed deposits resulted which have a copper content greater than about 90% by weight. The RBS spectra were analysed objectively using the DataFurnace code, with the assumption that the deposit was CuOx, and the validity of different assumed values of x being tested. Application of gel-casting to the fabrication of 1-3 piezoelectric ceramic-polymer composites for high-frequency ultrasound devices

A modified gel-casting technique was used to fabricate a 1-3 piezoelectric ceramic/polymer composite substrate formed by irregular-shaped pillar arrays of small dimensions and kerfs. This technique involves the polymerization of aqueous piezoelectric (PZT) suspensions with added water-soluble epoxy resin and polyamine-based hardener that lead to high strength, high density and resilient ceramic bodies. Soft micromoulding was used to shape the ceramic segments, and micropillars with lateral features down to 4 m and height-to-width aspect ratios of ∼10 were achieved. The composite exhibited a clear thickness resonance mode at approximately 70 MHz and a k eff ∼ 0.51, demonstrating that the ceramic micropillars possess good electrical properties. Furthermore, gel-casting allows the fabrication of ceramic structures with non-conventional shapes; hence, device design is not limited by the standard fabrication methods. This is of particular benefit for high-frequency transducers where the critical design dimensions are reduced. © 2012 IOP Publishing Ltd.
