This paper presents a method for the linear analysis of the stiffness and strength of open and closed cell lattices with arbitrary topology. The method hinges on a multiscale approach that separates the analysis of the lattice in two scales. At the macroscopic level, the lattice is considered as a uniform material; at the microscopic scale, on the other hand, the cell microstructure is modelled in detail by means of an in-house finite element solver. The method allows determine the macroscopic stiffness, the internal forces in the edges and walls of the lattice, as well as the global periodic buckling loads, along with their buckling modes. Four cube-based lattices and nine cell topologies derived by Archimedean polyhedra are studied. Several of them are characterized here for the first time with a particular attention on the role that the cell wall plays on the stiffness and strength properties. The method, automated in a computational routine, has been used to develop material property charts that help to gain insight into the performance of the lattices under investigation. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

The quartz crystal resonator has been traditionally employed in studying surface-confined physisorbed films and particles by measuring dissipation and frequency shifts. However, theoretical interpretation of the experimental observations is often challenged due to limited understanding of physical interaction mechanisms at the interfaces involved. Here we model a physisorbed interaction between particles and gold electrode surface of a quartz crystal and demonstrate how the nonlinear modulation of the electric response of the crystal due to the nonlinear interaction forces may be used to study the dynamics of the particles. In particular, we show that the graphs of the deviation in the third Fourier harmonic response versus oscillation amplitude provide important information about the onset, progress and nature of sliding of the particles. The graphs also present a signature of the surface-particle interaction and could be used to estimate the interaction energy profile. Interestingly, the insights gained from the model help to explain some of the experimental observations with physisorbed streptavidin-coated polystyrene microbeads on quartz resonators. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Nonlinear analysis of thermoacoustic instability is essential for prediction of frequencies and amplitudes of limit cycles. In frequency domain analyses, a quasi-linear transfer function between acoustic velocity and heat release rate perturbations, called the flame describing function (FDF), is obtained from a flame model or experiments. The FDF is a function of the frequency and amplitude of velocity perturbations but only contains the heat release response at the forcing frequency. While the gain and phase of the FDF provide insight into the nonlinear dynamics of the system, the accuracy of its predictions remains to be verified for different types of nonlinearity. In time domain analyses, the governing equations of the fully coupled problem are solved to find the time evolution of the system. One method is to discretize the governing equations using a suitable basis, such as the natural acoustic modes of the system. The number of modes used in the discretization alters the accuracy of the solution. In our previous work we have shown that predictions using the FDF are almost exactly the same as those obtained from the time-domain using only one mode for the discretization. We call this the single-mode method. In this paper we compare results from the single-mode and multi-mode methods, applied to a thermoacoustic system of a premixed flame in a tube. For some cases, the results differ greatly in both amplitude as well as frequency content. This study shows that the contribution from higher and subharmonics to the nonlinear dynamics can be significant and must be considered for an accurate and comprehensive analysis of thermoacoustic systems. Hence multi-mode simulations are necessary, and the single-mode method or the FDF may be insufficient to capture some of the complex nonlinear behaviour in fhermoacoustics.

This paper focuses on the stiffness and strength of lattices with multiple hierarchical levels. We examine two-dimensional and three-dimensional lattices with up to three levels of structural hierarchy. At each level, the topology and the orientation of the lattice are prescribed, while the relative density is varied over a defined range. The properties of selected hierarchical lattices are obtained via a multiscale approach applied iteratively at each hierarchical level. The results help to quantify the effect that multiple orders of structural hierarchy produces on stretching and bending dominated lattices. Material charts for the macroscopic stiffness and strength illustrate how the property range of the lattices can expand as subsequent levels of hierarchy are added. The charts help to gain insight into the structural benefit that multiple hierarchies can impart to the macroscopic performance of a lattice. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The objective of the research conducted by the authors is to explore the feasibility of determining reliable in situ values of shear modulus as a function of strain. In this paper the meaning of the material stiffness obtained from impact and harmonic excitation tests on a surface slab is discussed. A one-dimensional discrete model with the nonlinear material stiffness is used for this purpose. When a static load is applied followed by an impact excitation, if the amplitude of the impact is very small, the measured wave velocity using the cross-correlation indicates the wave velocity calculated from the tangent modulus corresponding to the state of stress caused by the applied static load. The duration of the impact affects the magnitude of the displacement and the particle velocity but has very little effect on the estimation of the wave velocity for the magnitudes considered herein. When a harmonic excitation is applied, the cross-correlation of the time histories at different depths estimates a wave velocity close to the one calculated from the secant modulus in the stress-strain loop under steady-state condition. The objective of the author's on-going research is to explore the feasibility of determining reliable in situ curves of shear modulus as a function of strain using the dynamic test. The purpose of this paper is limited to investigating what material stiffness is measured from a dynamic test, focusing on the harmonic excitation test. A one-dimensional discrete model with nonlinear material properties is used for this purpose. When a sinusoidal load is applied, the cross-correlation of signals from different depths estimates a wave velocity close to the one calculated from the secant modulus in the stress-strain loops under steady-state conditions. The variables that contributed to changing the average slope of the stress-strain loop also influence the estimate of the wave velocity from cross-correlation. Copyright ASCE 2007.

This paper studies the dynamical response of a rotary drilling system with a drag bit, using a lumped parameter model that takes into consideration the axial and torsional vibration modes of the bit. These vibrations are coupled through a bit-rock interaction law. At the bit-rock interface, the cutting process introduces a state-dependent delay, while the frictional process is responsible for discontinuous right-hand sides in the equations governing the motion of the bit. This complex system is characterized by a fast axial dynamics compared to the slow torsional dynamics. A dimensionless formulation exhibits a large parameter in the axial equation, enabling a two-time-scales analysis that uses a combination of averaging methods and a singular perturbation approach. An approximate model of the decoupled axial dynamics permits us to derive a pseudoanalytical expression of the solution of the axial equation. Its averaged behavior influences the slow torsional dynamics by generating an apparent velocity weakening friction law that has been proposed empirically in earlier work. The analytical expression of the solution of the axial dynamics is used to derive an approximate analytical expression of the velocity weakening friction law related to the physical parameters of the system. This expression can be used to provide recommendations on the operating parameters and the drillstring or the bit design in order to reduce the amplitude of the torsional vibrations. Moreover, it is an appropriate candidate model to replace empirical friction laws encountered in torsional models used for control. © 2009 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

In this paper, we survey some recent results on stabilization and disturbance attenuation for nonlinear systems using a dissipativity approach. After reviewing the basic dissipativity concept, we stress the connections between Lyapunov designs and the problem of achieving passivity by feedback. Focusing on physical models, we then illustrate how the design of stabilizing feedback can take advantage of the natural energy balance equation of the system. Here stabilization is viewed as the task of shaping the energy of the system to enforce a minimum at the desired equilibrium. Finally, we show the implications of dissipativity theory as an appropriate framework to study the nonlinear H∞ control problem. © 2002 EUCA.

The effect of bounded input perturbations on the stability of nonlinear globally asymptotically stable delay differential equations is analyzed. We investigate under which conditions global stability is preserved and if not, whether semi-global stabilization is possible by controlling the size or shape of the perturbation. These results are used to study the stabilization of partially linear cascade systems with partial state feedback.

This note analyzes the stabilizability properties of nonlinear cascades in which a nonminimum phase linear system is interconnected through its output to a Stable nonlinear system. It is shown that the instability of the zeros of the linear System can be traded with the stability of the nonlinear system up to a limit fixed by the growth properties of the cascade interconnection term. Below this limit, global stabilization is achieved by smooth static-state feedback. Beyond this limit, various examples illustrate that controllability of the cascade may be lost, making it impossible to achieve large regions of attractions.

Plugging is well known to be a major cause of instability in industrial cement mills. A simple nonlinear model able to simulate the plugging phenomenon is presented. It is shown how a nonlinear robust controller can be designed in order to fully prevent the mill from plugging.
