AC loss can be a significant problem for any applications that utilize or produce an AC current or magnetic field, such as an electric machine. The authors are currently investigating the electromagnetic properties of high temperature superconductors with a particular focus on the AC loss in coils made from YBCO superconductors. In this paper, a 2D finite element model based on the H formulation is introduced. The model is then used to calculate the transport AC loss using both a bulk approximation and modeling the individual turns in a racetrack-shaped coil. The coil model is based on the superconducting stator coils used in the University of Cambridge EPEC Superconductivity Group's superconducting permanent magnet synchronous motor design. The transport AC loss of a stator coil is measured using an electrical method based on inductive compensation using a variable mutual inductance. The simulated results are compared with the experimental results, verifying the validity of the model, and ways to improve the accuracy of the model are discussed. © 2010 IEEE.

Offshore and onshore buried pipelines under high operating temperature and pressures may lead to upheaval buckling (UHB) if sufficient soil cover is not present to prevent the upward movement of the pipeline. In regions where seasonal changes involve ground soil undergoing freezing-thawing cycles, the uplift resistance from soil cover may be minimum when the soil is undergoing thawing. This paper presents the results from 2 directly-comparable minidrum centrifuge tests conducted at the Schofield Centre, University of Cambridge, to investigate the difference in uplift resistance responses between fully-saturated and thawed sandy backfill conditions. Both tests were conducted drained at 30g using an 8.6 mm diameter aluminium model pipe, corresponding to a prototype pipe diameter of 258 mm. The soil cover/pipe diameter ratio, H/D, was kept at 1. Fraction E fine silica sand was used as the backfill. Preliminary experimental results indicated that the ultimate uplift resistance of a thawing sand backfill to be lower than that of a fully saturated sand backfill. This suggests that in regions where backfill soil undergoes freeze-thaw cycles, the thawing backfill may be more critical than fully saturated backfill for uplift resistance. The 2-dimensional displacement field during the experiment was accurately measured and analysed using the Particle Image Velocimetry technique. This article investigates how to use UK probabilistic climate-change projections (UKCP09) in rigorous building energy analysis. Two office buildings (deep plan and shallow plan) are used as case studies to demonstrate the application of UKCP09. Three different methods for reducing the computational demands are explored: statistical reduction (Finkelstein-Schafer [F-S] statistics), simplification using degree-day theory and the use of metamodels. The first method, which is based on an established technique, can be used as reference because it provides the most accurate information. However, it is necessary to automatically choose weather files based on F-S statistic by using computer programming language because thousands of weather files created from UKCP09 weather generator need to be processed. A combination of the second (degree-day theory) and third method (metamodels) requires only a relatively small number of simulation runs, but still provides valuable information to further implement the uncertainty and sensitivity analyses. The article also demonstrates how grid computing can be used to speed up the calculation for many independent EnergyPlus models by harnessing the processing power of idle desktop computers. © 2011 International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA).

In Immersed Boundary Methods (IBM) the effect of complex geometries is introduced through the forces added in the Navier-Stokes solver at the grid points in the vicinity of the immersed boundaries. Most of the methods in the literature have been used with Cartesian grids. Moreover many of the methods developed in the literature do not satisfy some basic conservation properties (the conservation of torque, for instance) on non-uniform meshes. In this paper we will follow the RKPM method originated by Liu et al. [1] to build locally regularized functions that verify a number of integral conditions. These local approximants will be used both for interpolating the velocity field and for spreading the singular force field in the framework of a pressure correction scheme for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We will also demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of the scheme through various examples. Copyright © 2010 by ASME.

In this paper, the authors investigate the electromagnetic properties of stacks of high temperature superconductor (HTS) coated conductors with a particular focus on calculating the total transport AC loss. The cross-section of superconducting cables and coils is often modeled as a two-dimensional stack of coated conductors, and these stacks can be used to estimate the AC loss of a practical device. This paper uses a symmetric two dimensional (2D) finite element model based on the H formulation, and a detailed investigation into the effects of a magnetic substrate on the transport AC loss of a stack is presented. The number of coated conductors in each stack is varied from 1 to 150, and three types of substrate are compared: non-magnetic weakly magnetic and strongly magnetic. The non-magnetic substrate model is comparable with results from existing models for the limiting cases of a single tape (Norris) and an infinite stack (Clem). The presence of a magnetic substrate increases the total AC loss of the stack, due to an increased localized magnetic flux density, and the stronger the magnetic material, the further the flux penetrates into the stack overall. The AC loss is calculated for certain tapes within the stack, and the differences and similarities between the losses throughout the stack are explained using the magnetic flux penetration and current density distributions in those tapes. The ferromagnetic loss of the substrate itself is found to be negligible in most cases, except for small magnitudes of current. Applying these findings to practical applications, where AC transport current is involved, superconducting coils should be wound where possible using coated conductors with a non-magnetic substrate to reduce the total AC loss in the coil. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. The Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (BDFIG) shows commercial promise as replacement for doublyfed slip-ring generators for wind power applications by offering reduced capital and operational costs due to its brushless operation. In order to facilitate its commercial deployment, the capabilities of the BDFIG system to comply with grid code requirements have to be assessed. This paper, for the first time, studies the performance of the BDFIG under grid fault ride-through and presents the dynamic behaviour of the machine during three-phase symmetrical voltage dips. Both full and partial voltage dips are studied using a vector model. Simulation and experimental results are provided for a 180 frame BDFIG.

This paper proposes a single-phase variant of the Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine, the Single-Phase BDFM, SPB. Like the BDFM it is a variable speed generator which requires a converter rated at only a fraction of the machine rating, using structure with no brushes. Unlike the BDFM, most of its power is delivered directly into a single-phase grid connection. As such it is a potential replacement for PM generators in small-ish wind turbines, potentially with a much lower cost. In this paper we give details of its operation, with reference to results from the first prototype SPB. We also suggest how it may be controlled, again with experimental results. © 2011 IEEE.

An immersed finite element method is presented to compute flows with complex moving boundaries on a fixed Cartesian grid. The viscous, incompressible fluid flow equations are discretized with b-spline basis functions. The two-scale relation for b-splines is used to implement an elegant and efficient technique to satisfy the LBB condition. On non-grid-aligned fluid domains and at moving boundaries, the boundary conditions are enforced with a consistent penalty method as originally proposed by Nitsche. In addition, a special extrapolation technique is employed to prevent the loss of numerical stability in presence of arbitrarily small cut-cells. The versatility and accuracy of the proposed approach is demonstrated by means of convergence studies and comparisons with previous experimental and computational investigations.

Theoretical and experimental AC loss data on a superconducting pancake coil wound using second generation (2 G) conductors are presented. An anisotropic critical state model is used to calculate critical current and the AC losses of a superconducting pancake coil. In the coil there are two regions, the critical state region and the subcritical region. The model assumes that in the subcritical region the flux lines are parallel to the tape wide face. AC losses of the superconducting pancake coil are calculated using this model. Both calorimetric and electrical techniques were used to measure AC losses in the coil. The calorimetric method is based on measuring the boil-off rate of liquid nitrogen. The electric method used a compensation circuit to eliminate the inductive component to measure the loss voltage of the coil. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical calculations thus validating the anisotropic critical state model for loss estimations in the superconducting pancake coil. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

Landslides occur both onshore and offshore, however little attention has been given to offshore landslides (submarine landslides). The unique characteristics of submarine landslides include large mass movements and long travel distances at very gentle slopes. Submarine landslides have significant impacts and consequences on offshore and coastal facilities. This paper presents data from a series of centrifuge tests simulating submarine landslide flows on a very gentle slope. Experiments were conducted at different gravity levels to understand the scaling laws involved in simulating submarine landslide flows through centrifuge modelling. The slope was instrumented with miniature sensors for measurements of pore pressure beneath the flow. A series of digital cameras were used to capture the flow in flight. The results provide a better understanding of the scaling laws that needs to be adopted for centrifuge experiments involving submarine landslide flows and gives an insight into the flow mechanisms. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

The seismic design for offshore foundations is based predominantly on experience onshore. This paper describes the results of dynamic centrifuge tests performed to validate the performance of a suction caisson installed in normally consolidated clay. The main objective is to evaluate the likely plastic displacement under different shaking levels. Permanent displacement results indicate that the displacements experienced are well within the allowable movement for the foundation considered, even though a strength based design approach would consider this to be a failure. Larger earthquakes are seen to produce comparatively smaller displacements. It is concluded that the when designing for seismic loading, if some displacement is permissible then a performance-based approach allowing some displacement proves significantly less conservative than a purely strength-based design. It is also concluded that dynamic response analyses should consider the strength of soil, as this can act as a fuse against large amplitude shear waves. © 2011 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

POMDP algorithms have made significant progress in recent years by allowing practitioners to find good solutions to increasingly large problems. Most approaches (including point-based and policy iteration techniques) operate by refining a lower bound of the optimal value function. Several approaches (e.g., HSVI2, SARSOP, grid-based approaches and online forward search) also refine an upper bound. However, approximating the optimal value function by an upper bound is computationally expensive and therefore tightness is often sacrificed to improve efficiency (e.g., sawtooth approximation). In this paper, we describe a new approach to efficiently compute tighter bounds by i) conducting a prioritized breadth first search over the reachable beliefs, ii) propagating upper bound improvements with an augmented POMDP and iii) using exact linear programming (instead of the sawtooth approximation) for upper bound interpolation. As a result, we can represent the bounds more compactly and significantly reduce the gap between upper and lower bounds on several benchmark problems. The Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (BDFIG) shows commercial promise for wind power generation due to its lower cost and higher reliability compared to the Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). For the purposes of commercialisation, the BDFIG must meet grid codes at all times. Nowadays, all new wind generators have to ride through certain grid faults, and the Low-Voltage Ride Through (LVRT) capability has become one of the most important points on which to assess the performance a generator. This paper, for the first time, proposes a control scheme to enable the the BDFIG to ride through symmetrical voltage dips. Simulation results and experimental results on a prototype BDFIG show that the proposed scheme gives the capability to ride through low voltage faults. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper begins with introducing the winding techniques of two superconducting double-pancake coils wound using 2G coated conductors. These winding techniques are able to guarantee a good performance for the superconducting coils. Then the coil critical currents were measured and compared with a simulation model. The results were consistent. Finally the coil AC losses were measured using an experimental circuit including a compensation coil. The simulation results are close to the experiment results. © 2010 IEEE.
