This paper presents a numerical method for the simulation of flow in turbomachinery blade rows using a solution-adaptive mesh methodology. The fully three-dimensional, compressible, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with k-ε turbulence modeling (and low Reynolds number damping terms) are solved on an unstructured mesh formed from tetrahedral finite volumes. At stages in the solution, mesh refinement is carried out based on flagging cell faces with either a fractional variation of a chosen variable (like Mach number) greater than a given threshold or with a mean value of the chosen variable within a given range. Several solutions are presented, including that for the highly three-dimensional flow associated with the corner stall and secondary flow in a transonic compressor cascade, to demonstrate the potential of the new method.

Comprehensive computer modelling has been used to investigate the dependence of dispersion penalty on transmission length in an optical communications system employing a directly modulated 2.5Gbit/s DFB laser source and an optimised fibre grating dispersion compensator. Two grating apodization schemes, tanh and Gaussian, have been compared. The 2dB dispersion penalty transmission distance is shown to be approximately 520km along standard monomode fibre after compensation with a 5cm tanh grating. This represents a great improvement over the 150km range expected for a similar uncompensated system.

A novel technique for high quality femtosecond pulse generation from a gain-switched laser diode by means of pulse compression and transformation in a compact nonlinear fiber device, based on a dispersion-imbalanced fiber loop mirror (DILM) is demonstrated. This source allows the generation of extremely high quality pulses as short as 270 fs on demand with strong suppression of pulse pedestals. Spectral filtering in arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) converts the device into a compact multiwavelength source of high-quality picosecond pulses for optical time division multiplexing/wavelength division multiplexing applications.

We propose a single optical photon source for quantum cryptography based on the acoustoelectric effect. Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) propagating through a quasi-one-dimensional channel have been shown to produce packets of electrons that reside in the SAW minima and travel at the velocity of sound. In our scheme, the electron packets are injected into a p-type region, resulting in photon emission. Since the number of electrons in each packet can be controlled down to a single electron, a stream of single- (or N-) photon states, with a creation time strongly correlated with the driving acoustic field, should be generated. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

Problem of DC link size in a stiff voltage-source inverter for electric drive is described in the paper. Advantages of advanced film capacitor technology over conventional one for DC link application are reviewed. Conventional DC link capacitor selection methods are questioned in view of advanced capacitor technology utilization in stiff voltage-source inverter. For capacitor selection maximum ripple rms current point is shown. DC link ripple current spectrum analysis under modern PWM techniques is presented. Some capacitor selection recommendations are given. The analysis has been aided greatly by computer modeling in PSpice. ©2005 IEEE.

The heterogeneous nature of the subsurface and associated DNAPL morphologies often poses the greatest limitation to source zone clean-up strategies. Hence, detailed site characterisation techniques are required. The data presented in this paper has been collected from a series of laboratory 2-D tank experiments and numerical simulations of Partitioning Interwell Tracer Tests (PITT) in a wide range of aquifer conditions and DNAPL morphologies. Alternative uses of tracer breakthrough data have been developed In order to characterise the mass flux generated from the DNAPL source. By combining the laboratory and numerical data, a relationship between normalised mass flux and tracer-based average source zone DNAPL saturation has been established. Knowledge of such a relationship allows remediation targets to be identified, clean-up efficiencies to be evaluated, and increases the accuracy of any risk assessment.

Cambridge Flow Solutions Ltd, Compass House, Vision Park, Cambridge, CB4 9AD, UK Real-world simulation challenges are getting bigger: virtual aero-engines with multistage blade rows coupled with their secondary air systems & with fully featured geometry; environmental flows at meta-scales over resolved cities; synthetic battlefields. It is clear that the future of simulation is scalable, end-to-end parallelism. To address these challenges we have reported in a sequence of papers a series of inherently parallel building blocks based on the integration of a Level Set based geometry kernel with an octree-based cut-Cartesian mesh generator, RANS flow solver, post-processing and geometry management & editing. The cut-cells which characterize the approach are eliminated by exporting a body-conformal mesh driven by the underpinning Level Set and managed by mesh quality optimization algorithms; this permits third party flow solvers to be deployed. This paper continues this sequence by reporting & demonstrating two main novelties: variable depth volume mesh refinement enabling variable surface mesh refinement and a radical rework of the mesh generation into a bottom-up system based on Space Filling Curves. Also reported are the associated extensions to body-conformal mesh export. Everything is implemented in a scalable, parallel manner. As a practical demonstration, meshes of guaranteed quality are generated for a fully resolved, generic aircraft carrier geometry, a cooled disc brake assembly and a B747 in landing configuration. The background to this review paper is research we have performed over recent years aimed at developing a simulation system capable of handling large scale, real world applications implemented in an end-to-end parallel, scalable manner. The particular focus of this paper is the use of a Level Set solid modeling geometry kernel within this parallel framework to enable automated design optimization without topological restrictions and on geometries of arbitrary complexity. Also described is another interesting application of Level Sets: their use in guiding the export of a body-conformal mesh from our basic cut-Cartesian background octree - mesh - this permits third party flow solvers to be deployed. As a practical demonstrations meshes of guaranteed quality are generated and flow-solved for a B747 in full landing configuration and an automated optimization is performed on a cooled turbine tip geometry. Most HMM-based TTS systems use a hard voiced/unvoiced classification to produce a discontinuous F0 signal which is used for the generation of the source-excitation. When a mixed source excitation is used, this decision can be based on two different sources of information: the state-specific MSD-prior of the F0 models, and/or the frame-specific features generated by the aperiodicity model. This paper examines the meaning of these variables in the synthesis process, their interaction, and how they affect the perceived quality of the generated speech The results of several perceptual experiments show that when using mixed excitation, subjects consistently prefer samples with very few or no false unvoiced errors, whereas a reduction in the rate of false voiced errors does not produce any perceptual improvement. This suggests that rather than using any form of hard voiced/unvoiced classification, e.g., the MSD-prior, it is better for synthesis to use a continuous F0 signal and rely on the frame-level soft voiced/unvoiced decision of the aperiodicity model. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents a simple design and the testing of a blackbody prototype. The physical properties and geometry of the cavity produce a radiator or blackbody with an emissivity greater than 0.99. The prototype has the advantages of having a traditional spherical cavity made of alumina refractory cement and a radiative emission very close to that of an ideal blackbody. The prototype can be used as a calibration standard for other radiation measuring instruments or sensors. Experimental measurements of radiant flux of the prototype measured with a calibrated infrared radiometer and a wide spectrum radiometer are also presented. The prototype is easy to construct and the material required are available to most research centers, laboratories, industries, and universities. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.
