This paper discusses the inverter ratings of Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine (BDFM) adjustable speed drive (ASD) or generator (ASG) systems. Based on the per phase equivalent circuit model, the ratings of the two inverters in a bidirectional converter are evaluated individually. An approach to minimise the total inverter rating is presented, taking into account power factor constraints of the power grid. The effects of speed deviation and control winding excitation on the inverter ratings are discussed. Predictions of inverter ratings are presented with experimental verification. A design example is also provided in which the total inverter rating is minimised for a practical BDFM based ASG system. © 2005 IEEE.

The heterogeneous nature of the subsurface and associated DNAPL morphologies often poses the greatest limitation to source zone clean-up strategies. Hence, detailed site characterisation techniques are required. The data presented in this paper has been collected from a series of laboratory 2-D tank experiments and numerical simulations of Partitioning Interwell Tracer Tests (PITT) in a wide range of aquifer conditions and DNAPL morphologies. Alternative uses of tracer breakthrough data have been developed In order to characterise the mass flux generated from the DNAPL source. By combining the laboratory and numerical data, a relationship between normalised mass flux and tracer-based average source zone DNAPL saturation has been established. Knowledge of such a relationship allows remediation targets to be identified, clean-up efficiencies to be evaluated, and increases the accuracy of any risk assessment.

This paper presents an investigation into the losses in a three-phase induction motor under different pulse width modulation (PWM) excitation conditions. The impacts of Sinusoidal PWM, Space Vector PWM and Discontinuous PWM on machine loss are compared and studied. Finite element analysis simulations are employed to predict the machine losses with the loss breakdown analysis under different PWM schemes. Direct Calorimetric measurements are utilized to verify the finite element modeling and provide direct quantifications of machine loss under modern PWM techniques. © 2008 IEEE.

This paper presents the application of advanced compact models of the IGBT and PIN diode to the full electrothermal system simulation of a hybrid electric vehicle converter using a look-up table of device losses. The Fourier-based solution model is used, which takes account of features such as local lifetime control and field-stop technology. Device and circuit parameters are extracted from experimental waveforms and device structural data. Matching of the switching waveforms and the resulting generation of the look-up table is presented. An example of the use of the look-up tables in simulation of inverter device temperatures is also given, for a hypothetical electric vehicle subjected to an urban driving cycle. © 2006 IEEE.

The ability to separate acoustically radiating and non-radiating components in fluid flow is desirable to identify the true sources of aerodynamic sound, which can be expressed in terms of the non-radiating flow dynamics. These non-radiating components are obtained by filtering the flow field. Two linear filtering strategies are investigated: one is based on a differential operator, the other employs convolution operations. Convolution filters are found to be superior at separating radiating and non-radiating components. Their ability to decompose the flow into non-radiating and radiating components is demonstrated on two different flows: one satisfying the linearized Euler and the other the Navier-Stokes equations. In the latter case, the corresponding sound sources are computed. These sources provide good insight into the sound generation process. High temperature superconductors, such as melt-processed YBCO bulks, have great advantages on trapping strong magnetic fields in liquid nitrogen. To enable them to function well, there are some traditional ways of magnetizing them, in which the YBCO bulks are magnetized instantly under a very strong source of magnetic field. These ways would consume great amounts of power to make the superconductors trap as much field as possible. Thermally Actuated Magnetization (TAM) Flux pump has been proved a perfect substitution for these expensive methods by using a relatively small magnet as the source. In this way, the field is developed gradually over many pulses. Unlike conventional flux pumping ways, the TAM does not drive the superconductor normal during the process of magnetization. In former experiments for the flux pump, some fundamental tests were done. In this paper, the experiment system is advanced to a new level with better temperature control to the thermal waves moving in the Gadolinium and with less air gap for the flux lines sweeping through the superconductor. This experiment system F leads to a stronger accumulation of the magnetic field trapped in the YBCO bulk. We also tried different ways of sending the thermal waves and found out that the pumping effect is closely related to the power of the heaters and the on and off time. © 2010 IEEE.

Commercially available integrated compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) use self-resonant ballasts on grounds of simplicity and cost. To understand how to improve ballast efficiency, it is necessary to quantify the losses. The losses occurring in these ballasts have been directly measured using a precision mini-calorimeter. In addition, a Pspice model has been used to simulate the performance of an 18 W integrated CFL. The lamp has been represented by a behavioural model and Jiles-Atherton equations were used to model the current transformer core. The total loss is in close agreement with measurements from the mini-calorimeter, confirming the accuracy of the model. The total loss was then disaggregated into component losses by simulation, showing that the output inductor is the primary source of loss, followed by the inverter switches. © 2011 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Most HMM-based TTS systems use a hard voiced/unvoiced classification to produce a discontinuous F0 signal which is used for the generation of the source-excitation. When a mixed source excitation is used, this decision can be based on two different sources of information: the state-specific MSD-prior of the F0 models, and/or the frame-specific features generated by the aperiodicity model. This paper examines the meaning of these variables in the synthesis process, their interaction, and how they affect the perceived quality of the generated speech The results of several perceptual experiments show that when using mixed excitation, subjects consistently prefer samples with very few or no false unvoiced errors, whereas a reduction in the rate of false voiced errors does not produce any perceptual improvement. This suggests that rather than using any form of hard voiced/unvoiced classification, e.g., the MSD-prior, it is better for synthesis to use a continuous F0 signal and rely on the frame-level soft voiced/unvoiced decision of the aperiodicity model. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents a simple design and the testing of a blackbody prototype. The physical properties and geometry of the cavity produce a radiator or blackbody with an emissivity greater than 0.99. The prototype has the advantages of having a traditional spherical cavity made of alumina refractory cement and a radiative emission very close to that of an ideal blackbody. The prototype can be used as a calibration standard for other radiation measuring instruments or sensors. Experimental measurements of radiant flux of the prototype measured with a calibrated infrared radiometer and a wide spectrum radiometer are also presented. The prototype is easy to construct and the material required are available to most research centers, laboratories, industries, and universities. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Acoustic radiation from a spherical source undergoing angularly periodic axisymmetric harmonic surface vibrations while eccentrically suspended within a thermoviscous fluid sphere, which is immersed in a viscous thermally conducting unbounded fluid medium, is analyzed in an exact fashion. The formulation uses the appropriate wave-harmonic field expansions along with the translational addition theorem for spherical wave functions and the relevant boundary conditions to develop a closed-form solution in form of infinite series. The analytical results are illustrated with a numerical example in which the vibrating source is eccentrically positioned within a chemical fluid sphere submerged in water. The modal acoustic radiation impedance load on the source and the radiated far-field pressure are evaluated and discussed for representative values of the parameters characterizing the system. The proposed model can lead to a better understanding of dynamic response of an underwater acoustic lens. It is equally applicable in miniature transducer analysis and design with applications in medical ultrasonics.
