We report on electrical transport measurements at high current densities on optimally doped YBa 2Cu 3O 7-δ thin films grown on vicinal SrTiO 3 substrates. Data were collected by using a pulsed-current technique in a four-probe arrangement, allowing to extend the current-voltage characteristics to high supercritical current densities (up to 24 MA cm -2) and high electric fields (more than 20 V/cm), in the superconducting state at temperatures between 30 and 80 K. The electric measurements were performed on tracks perpendicular to the vicinal step direction, such that the current crossed between ab planes, under magnetic field rotated in the plane defined by the crystallographic c axis and the current density. At magnetic field orientation parallel to the cuprate layers, evidence for the sliding motion along the ab planes (vortex channeling) was found. The signature of vortex channeling appeared to get enhanced with increasing electric field, due to the peculiar depinning features in the kinked vortex range. They give rise to a current-voltage characteristics steeper than in the more off-plane rectilinear vortex orientations, in the electric field range below approximately 1 V/cm. Roughly above this value, the high vortex channeling velocities (up to 8.6 km/s) could be ascribed to the flux flow, although the signature of ohmic transport appeared to be altered by unavoidable macroscopic self-heating and hot-electron-like effects. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. The effect of size and slip system configuration on the tensile stress-strain response of micron-sized planar crystals as obtained from discrete dislocation plasticity simulations is presented. The crystals are oriented for either single or symmetric double slip. With the rotation of the tensile axis unconstrained, there is a strong size dependence, with the flow strength increasing with decreasing specimen size. Below a certain specimen size, the flow strength of the crystals is set by the nucleation strength of the initially present Frank-Read sources. The main features of the size dependence are the same for both the single and symmetric double slip configurations.

The tensile response of single crystal films passivated on two sides is analysed using climb enabled discrete dislocation plasticity. Plastic deformation is modelled through the motion of edge dislocations in an elastic solid with a lattice resistance to dislocation motion, dislocation nucleation, dislocation interaction with obstacles and dislocation annihilation incorporated through a set of constitutive rules. The dislocation motion in the films is by glide-only or by climb-assisted glide whereas in the surface passivation layers dislocation motion occurs by glide-only and penalized by a friction stress. For realistic values of the friction stress, the size dependence of the flow strength of the oxidised films was mainly a geometrical effect resulting from the fact that the ratio of the oxide layer thickness to film thickness increases with decreasing film thickness. However, if the passivation layer was modelled as impenetrable, i.e. an infinite friction stress, the plastic hardening rate of the films increases with decreasing film thickness even for geometrically self-similar specimens. This size dependence is an intrinsic material size effect that occurs because the dislocation pile-up lengths become on the order of the film thickness. Counter-intuitively, the films have a higher flow strength when dislocation motion is driven by climb-assisted glide compared to the case when dislocation motion is glide-only. This occurs because dislocation climb breaks up the dislocation pile-ups that aid dislocations to penetrate the passivation layers. The results also show that the Bauschinger effect in passivated thin films is stronger when dislocation motion is climb-assisted compared to films wherein dislocation motion is by glide-only. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Analyses of crack growth under cyclic loading conditions are discussed where plastic flow arises from the motion of large numbers of discrete dislocations and the fracture properties are embedded in a cohesive surface constitutive relation. The formulation is the same as used to analyse crack growth under monotonic loading conditions, differing only in the remote loading being a cyclic function of time. Fatigue, i.e. crack growth in cyclic loading at a driving force for which the crack would have arrested under monotonic loading, emerges in the simulations as a consequence of the evolution of internal stresses associated with the irreversibility of the dislocation motion. A fatigue threshold, Paris law behaviour, striations, the accelerated growth of short cracks and the scaling with material properties are outcomes of the calculations. Results for single crystals and polycrystals will be discussed.

Previous numerical simulations have shown that vortex breakdown starts with the formation of a steady axisymmetric bubble and that an unsteady spiralling mode then develops on top of this.We study how this spiral mode of vortex breakdown might be suppressed or promoted. We use a Lagrangian approach to identify regions of the flow which are sensitive to small open-loop steady and unsteady (harmonic) forces. We find these regions to be upstream of the vortex breakdown bubble. We investigate passive control using a small axisymmetric control ring. In this case, the steady and unsteady control forces are caused by the drag force on the control ring. We find a narrow region upstream of the bubble where the control ring will stabilise the flow and we verify this using numerical simulations. © 2012 IEEE.

An experimental study of bleed and vortex generators in supersonic ow has been conducted. Methods were developed to analyze and directly compare the two systems' effects on turbulent boundary layers to better understand their potential to mitigate ow separation. LDA was used to measure two components of velocity in the boundary-layer for three cases|baseline, with bleed, or with a VG|at Mach numbers of 1.3, 1.5 and 1.8. The bleed system was comprised of a series of 2mm diameter normal holes operated at different suction rates, removing up to 10% of the incoming boundary layer. Three VG shapes were tested only at Mach 1.5 and 1.8. Measurements of the evolution of Hi and Cf downstream of each device indicate that Hi is not an appropriate parameter to gauge the effectiveness of vortex generators due to boundary layer wake distortion. The skin friction coeficient Cf may be a more appropriate measure. Similar increases in Cf were generated by VGs and bleed. The recovery to baseline conditions downstream of bleed was sensitive to Mach number, and more investigation of that effect will be required. Copyright © 2012 by University of Cambridge.

An experimental investigation has been undertaken in which vortex generators (VGs) have been employed to inhibit boundary-layer separation produced by the combined adversepressure- gradient of a terminal shock-wave and subsonic diffuser. This setup has been developed as part of a program to produce a more inlet relevant flow-field using a small-scale wind tunnel than previous studies. The resulting flow is dominated by large-scale separation, and as such, is thought to be a good test-bed for flow control. In this investigation, VGs have been added to determine their potential for shock-induced separation mitigation. In line with previous studies, it was observed that the application of VGs alone was not able to significantly alleviate separation overall, because enlarged corner separations was observed. Only when control of the corner separations using corner bleed was employed alongside centre-span control using VGs was a significant improvement in both wall pressure recovery (6% increase) and stagnation pressure recovery (2.4% increase) observed. Leading edge vortices are considered to be important in generating the high lift coefficients observed in insect flight and may therefore be relevant to micro-air vehicles. A potential flow model of an impulsively started flat plate, featuring a leading edge vortex (LEV) and a trailing edge vortex (TEV) is fitted to experimental data in order to provide insight into the mechanisms that influence the convection of the LEV and to study how the LEV contributes to lift. The potential flow model fits the experimental data best with no bound circulation, which is in accordance with Kelvin's circulation theorem. The lift-to-drag ratio is well approximated by the function 'cot α' for α > 15°, which supports the tentative conclusion that shortly after an impulsive start, at post-stall angles of attack, lift is caused non-circulatory forces and by the action of the LEV as opposed to bound circulation.
