We report the amplification of 10-100-pJ semiconductor diode pulses to an energy of 158 μJ and peak powers >100 kW in a multistage fiber amplifier chain based on a single-mode, large-mode-area erbium-doped amplifier design. To our knowledge these results represent the highest single-mode pulse energy extracted from any doped-fiber system. © 1997 Optical Society of America.

A new kind of Q switched laser, the bow tie laser is introduced. This type of laser permits large area facets at both ends so that generation of high optical powers involve low optical intensities to prevent optical damage. The incorporation of doubled tapered waveguide structure to the Q switched multicontact laser has increased the optical pulse energies and peak powers of the laser.

Multiwavelength pulses were generated using a monolithically integrated device. The device used is an integrated InGaAs/InGaAsP/InP multi-wavelength laser fabricated by selective area regrowth. The device self pulsated on all of the four wavelength channels. 48 ps pulses were obtained which were measured by a 50GHz oscilloscope and 32GHz photodiode which was not bandwidth limited. Simultaneous multi-wavelength pulse generation was also achieved.

The results of the high-quality nonlinear pulse compression of gain-switched laser diode pulses using a two-cascade compression scheme are presented. The scheme incorporates a dispersive delay line and a nonlinear pulse compressor based on a dispersion-imbalanced fiber loop mirror (DILM). It is demonstrated that the DILM can be also used for the pulse compression with a compression ratio of 10 or higher.

A novel technique for high quality femtosecond pulse generation from a gain-switched laser diode by means of pulse compression and transformation in a compact nonlinear fiber device, based on a dispersion-imbalanced fiber loop mirror (DILM) is demonstrated. This source allows the generation of extremely high quality pulses as short as 270 fs on demand with strong suppression of pulse pedestals. Spectral filtering in arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) converts the device into a compact multiwavelength source of high-quality picosecond pulses for optical time division multiplexing/wavelength division multiplexing applications.

Tapered waveguides have been used for enhancing pulse powers in Q-switched AlGaAs and InGaAsP lasers. This paper reports on passively Q-switched pulses with 1.53 W peak power and 41-ps FWHM from an InGaAs/GasAs (970 nm) double-contact tapered semiconductor laser in a well defined single-lobed far-field.

In multi-carrier systems, small carrier frequency offsets result in significant degradation of performance and this offset should be compensated before demodulation can be performed. In this paper, we consider a generic multi-carrier system with pulse shaping and estimate the frequency offset by exploiting the cyclostationarity of the received signal. By transforming the time domain signal to the cyclic correlation domain we are able to estimate the frequency offset without the aid of pilot symbols or the cyclic prefix. The Bayesian framework is used to obtain the estimate and we show how we can simplify the estimation process. © 1999 IEEE.

The paper describes a model for a 6-phase induction motor driven by an inverter operating in a 6-pulse (square wave) mode. The model is implemented and performance, in terms of torque, current, efficiency and pulsating torque, compared to the performance of a 3-phase motor (both sine and 6-pulse supplied). The models are verified experimentally, in particular the efficiency performance, and it is illustrated that the improvement in inverter efficiency when in 6-pulse operating mode may improve the performance of the overall system. © 2005 IEEE.

this paper quantifies effects of using three different pulse width modulation (PWM) schemes on the losses in the inverter and induction motor of a 1 kW drive. Direct measurements of losses have been made with a calorimeter. Results show that for the inverter, discontinuous PWM excitation reduces losses by up to 15% compared to sine and symmetrical space vector PWM methods. However, at a low modulation index the greater harmonic content with discontinuous PWM increased motor losses by nearly 20%. This study demonstrates the importance of careful choice of modulation scheme to achieve high overall drive efficiency. © 2005 IEEE.

The fluid dynamic operation of a valveless pulse combustor has been studied experimentally and numerically. Through phase-locked chemiluminescence and pressure measurements it is shown that mechanical energy is created periodically in the flame surface, with an efficiency of 1.6%. This mechanical energy leaves the pulse combustor through unsteady jets at the aerovalve inlet and the tailpipe exit stations. Two thermodynamically distinct flows are identified: a flow that is transported from inlet to exit and participates in combustion along the way, and a flow that is ingested and then ejected from the combustor without undergoing combustion. It is the latter of these two flows which has the greatest quantity of net work done on it. Copyright © 2008 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

This paper describes an experimental investigation into the effect of unsteady fuel injection on the performance of a valveless pulse combustor. Two fuel systems were used. The first delivered a steady flow of ethylene through choked nozzles, and the second delivered ethylene in discrete pulses using high-frequency fuel injectors. Both fuel systems injected directly into the combustion chamber. The high-frequency fuel injectors were phase locked to the unsteady pressure measured on the inlet pipe. The phase and opening pulse width of the injectors and the time-averaged fuel mass flow rate through the injectors were independently varied. For a given fuel mass flow rate, it is shown that the maximum pressure amplitude occurs when fuel is injected during flow reversal in the inlet pipe, i.e. flow direction is out of the combustor. The optimal fuel injection pulse width is shown to be approximately 2/9th of the cycle. It should, however, be noted that this is the shortest time in which the injectors can reliably be fully opened and closed. It is shown that by using unsteady fuel injection the mass flow rate of fuel needed to achieve a given amplitude of unsteady pressure can be reduced by up to 65% when compared with the steady fuel injection case. At low fuel mass flow rates unsteady fuel injection is shown to raise the efficiency of the combustor by a factor of 7 decreasing to a factor of 2 at high fuel mass flow rates.
