In this paper we study the effect of introducing nitrogen into different carbon networks. Two kinds of carbon nitride films were deposited: (a) Using a DC-magnetron sputtering system sp2 bonded carbon nitride (a-CN) films were deposited and (b) Using a combination of filtered cathodic vacuum arc and a low-pressure N2 plasma source, N was introduced into sp3 carbon networks (ta-C), leading to the formation of a more dense CN film named ta-CN. For ta-CN films we found that the optical gap initially decreases as the N content and the sp2 fraction rises, but above a certain N quantity there is a level-off of the value, and the gap then remains constant despite further increases in the fraction and clustering of the sp2 phase. However, for a-CN films the optical gap increases with the nitrogen content. These two different trends are not easily explained using the same framework as that for carbon films, in which any decrease in the band gap is associated to an increase in the sp2 fraction or its clustering. Here we discuss the conditions that lead to high optical gap in sp2-bonded carbon nitride samples, which are clearly not associated to the presence of any crystalline super-hard phase. We also compared other differences in properties observed between the two films, such as deposition rate, infrared and Raman spectra. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

CMOS nanocrystalline silicon thin film transistors with high field effect mobility are reported. The transistors were directly deposited by radio-frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition at 150°C The transistors show maximum field effect mobility of 450 cm2/V-s for electrons and 100 cm2/V-s for holes at room temperature. We attribute the high mobilities to a reduction of the oxygen content, which acts as an accidental donor. Indeed, secondary ion mass spectrometry measurements show that the impurity concentration in the nanocrystalline Si layer is comparable to, or lower than, the defect density in the material, which is already low thanks to hydrogen passivation.

We report high hole and electron mobilities in nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si:H) top-gate staggered thin-film transistors (TFTs) fabricated by direct plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) at 260°C. The n-channel nc-Si:H TFT with n+ nc-Si:H ohmic contacts shows a field-effect electron mobility (μnFE) of 130 cm2/Vs, which increases to 150 cm2/Vs with Cr-silicide contacts, along with a field-effect hole mobility (μhFE) of 25 cm2/Vs. To the best of our knowledge, the hole and electron mobilities reported here are the highest achieved to date using direct PECVD. © 2005 IEEE.

With the emergence of transparent electronics, there has been considerable advancement in n-type transparent semiconducting oxide (TSO) materials, such as ZnO, InGaZnO, and InSnO. Comparatively, the availability of p-type TSO materials is more scarce and the available materials are less mature. The development of p-type semiconductors is one of the key technologies needed to push transparent electronics and systems to the next frontier, particularly for implementing p-n junctions for solar cells and p-type transistors for complementary logic/circuits applications. Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) is one of the most promising candidates for p-type TSO materials. This paper reports the deposition of Cu2O thin films without substrate heating using a high deposition rate reactive sputtering technique, called high target utilisation sputtering (HiTUS). This technique allows independent control of the remote plasma density and the ion energy, thus providing finer control of the film properties and microstructure as well as reducing film stress. The effect of deposition parameters, including oxygen flow rate, plasma power and target power, on the properties of Cu2O films are reported. It is known from previously published work that the formation of pure Cu2O film is often difficult, due to the more ready formation or co-formation of cupric oxide (CuO). From our investigation, we established two key concurrent criteria needed for attaining Cu2O thin films (as opposed to CuO or mixed phase CuO/Cu2O films). First, the oxygen flow rate must be kept low to avoid over-oxidation of Cu2O to CuO and to ensure a non-oxidised/non-poisoned metallic copper target in the reactive sputtering environment. Secondly, the energy of the sputtered copper species must be kept low as higher reaction energy tends to favour the formation of CuO. The unique design of the HiTUS system enables the provision of a high density of low energy sputtered copper radicals/ions, and when combined with a controlled amount of oxygen, can produce good quality p-type transparent Cu2O films with electrical resistivity ranging from 102 to 104 Ω-cm, hole mobility of 1-10 cm2/V-s, and optical band-gap of 2.0-2.6 eV. These material properties make this low temperature deposited HiTUS Cu 2O film suitable for fabrication of p-type metal oxide thin film transistors. Furthermore, the capability to deposit Cu2O films with low film stress at low temperatures on plastic substrates renders this approach favourable for fabrication of flexible p-n junction solar cells. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Stabilisation, using a wide range of binders including wastes, is most effective for heavy metal soil contamination. Bioremediation techniques, including bioaugmentation to enhance soil microbial population, are most effective for organic contaminants in the soil. For mixed contaminant scenarios a combination of these two techniques is currently being investigated. An essential issue in this combined remediation system is the effect of microbial processes on the leachability of the heavy metals. This paper considers the use of zeolite and compost as binder additives combined with bioaugmentation treatments and their effect on copper leachability in a model contaminated soil. Different leaching test conditions are considered including both NRA and TCLP batch leaching tests as well as flow-through column tests. Two flow rates are applied in the flow-through tests and the two leaching tests are compared. Recommendations are given as to the effectiveness of this combined remediation technique in the immobilisation of copper. © 2005 Taylor & Francis Group.

POMDP algorithms have made significant progress in recent years by allowing practitioners to find good solutions to increasingly large problems. Most approaches (including point-based and policy iteration techniques) operate by refining a lower bound of the optimal value function. Several approaches (e.g., HSVI2, SARSOP, grid-based approaches and online forward search) also refine an upper bound. However, approximating the optimal value function by an upper bound is computationally expensive and therefore tightness is often sacrificed to improve efficiency (e.g., sawtooth approximation). In this paper, we describe a new approach to efficiently compute tighter bounds by i) conducting a prioritized breadth first search over the reachable beliefs, ii) propagating upper bound improvements with an augmented POMDP and iii) using exact linear programming (instead of the sawtooth approximation) for upper bound interpolation. As a result, we can represent the bounds more compactly and significantly reduce the gap between upper and lower bounds on several benchmark problems. In this letter, we report E off-versus-V ce tradeoff curves for vertical superjunction insulated-gate bipolar transistors (SJ IGBTs), exhibiting unusual inverse slopes dE off/dV ce > 0 in a transition region between purely unipolar and strongly bipolar device behaviors. This effect is due to the action of p-pillar hole current when depleting the drift layer of SJ IGBTs during turnoff and the impact of current gain on the transconductance. Such SJ IGBTs surpass by a very significant margin their superjunction MOSFET counterparts in terms of power-handling capability and on-state and turnoff losses, all at the same time. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents a study which linked demographic variables with barriers affecting the adoption of domestic energy efficiency measures in large UK cities. The aim was to better understand the 'Energy Efficiency Gap' and improve the effectiveness of future energy efficiency initiatives. The data for this study was collected from 198 general population interviews (1.5-10 min) carried out across multiple locations in Manchester and Cardiff. The demographic variables were statistically linked to the identified barriers using a modified chi-square test of association (first order Rao-Scott corrected to compensate for multiple response data), and the effect size was estimated with an odds-ratio test. The results revealed that strong associations exist between demographics and barriers, specifically for the following variables: sex; marital status; education level; type of dwelling; number of occupants in household; residence (rent/own); and location (Manchester/Cardiff). The results and recommendations were aimed at city policy makers, local councils, and members of the construction/retrofit industry who are all working to improve the energy efficiency of the domestic built environment. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
