Uncooled DWDM transmission system using tunable laser sources with anti-mode-hop control protocol

We propose an uncooled DWDM system where errors from uncontrolled laser mode-hopping are avoided by using a control protocol based on monitoring SMSR. We describe a proof-of-principle demonstration of a novel uncooled 50GHz DWDM system. © 2011 IEEE.

The silent base flow and the sound sources in a laminar jet.

An algorithm to compute the silent base flow sources of sound in a jet is introduced. The algorithm is based on spatiotemporal filtering of the flow field and is applicable to multifrequency sources. It is applied to an axisymmetric laminar jet and the resulting sources are validated successfully. The sources are compared to those obtained from two classical acoustic analogies, based on quiescent and time-averaged base flows. The comparison demonstrates how the silent base flow sources shed light on the sound generation process. It is shown that the dominant source mechanism in the axisymmetric laminar jet is "shear-noise," which is a linear mechanism. The algorithm presented here could be applied to fully turbulent flows to understand the aerodynamic noise-generation mechanism.

Data Analysis on Complicated Construction Data Sources: Vision, Research, and Recent Developments

Compared with construction data sources that are usually stored and analyzed in spreadsheets and single data tables, data sources with more complicated structures, such as text documents, site images, web pages, and project schedules have been less intensively studied due to additional challenges in data preparation, representation, and analysis. In this paper, our definition and vision for advanced data analysis addressing such challenges are presented, together with related research results from previous work, as well as our recent developments of data analysis on text-based, image-based, web-based, and network-based construction sources. It is shown in this paper that particular data preparation, representation, and analysis operations should be identified, and integrated with careful problem investigations and scientific validation measures in order to provide general frameworks in support of information search and knowledge discovery from such information-abundant data sources.

Combining information sources for confidence estimation with CRF models

Obtaining accurate confidence measures for automatic speech recognition (ASR) transcriptions is an important task which stands to benefit from the use of multiple information sources. This paper investigates the application of conditional random field (CRF) models as a principled technique for combining multiple features from such sources. A novel method for combining suitably defined features is presented, allowing for confidence annotation using lattice-based features of hypotheses other than the lattice 1-best. The resulting framework is applied to different stages of a state-of-the-art large vocabulary speech recognition pipeline, and consistent improvements are shown over a sophisticated baseline system. Gamma-ray spectroscopy at TRIUMF-ISAC

The 8π spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC consists of 20 Compton-suppressed germanium detectors and various auxiliary devices. The Ge array, once used for studies of nuclei at high angular momentum, has been transformed into the world's most powerful device dedicated to radioactive-decay studies. Many improvements in the spectrometer have been made, including a high-throughput data acquisition system, installation of a moving tape collector, incorporation of an array of 20 plastic scintillators for β-particle tagging, 5 Si(Li) detectors for conversion electrons, and 10 BaF2 detectors for fast-lifetime measurements. Experiments can be performed where data from all detectors are collected simultaneously, resulting in a very detailed view of the nucleus through radioactive decay. A number of experimental programmes have been launched that take advantage of the versatility of the spectrometer, and the intense beams available at TRIUMF-ISAC. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Characterising the neutron and gamma responses of the NPL liquid scintillation detectors.

The absolute responses of the NPL liquid scintillation spectrometers to monoenergetic neutrons and gammas were measured at various energies in the ranges 1.2 - 17 MeV approximately for neutrons and 0.28 - 1.8 MeV for gammas. Additional measurements of the proton light output function were also carried out. Calculated responses were then obtained for the larger detector using the programs NRESP7 and PHRESP, and compared with the absolute measurements. Finally, response matrices for this detector were generated using responses calculated at closely spaced energies.
