The widespread use of piled foundations in areas prone to liquefaction has led to significant research being carried out to understand their behaviour during earthquakes. A key challenge inmodelling this problemin a centrifuge is the installation procedure, and in most dynamic centrifuge experiments piles are installed before the test commences, either pushing the piles at 1g, or fixing the piles in the model and the sand poured around them. In this paper, a series of dynamic centrifuge experiments are described in which a 2 × 2 pile group is pushed into the model before the test begins and also once the centrifuge has reached the test acceleration. The paper focuses on the key differences which were observed in the pile group's response to the earthquake motion, and in particular, the very different settlement responses of the pile groups.

An investigation was carried out into the effects of variable inlet guide vanes (VIGVs) on the performance and stability margin of a transonic fan in the presence of inlet flow distortion. The study was carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and validated with experimental data. The capability of CFD to predict the changes in performance with or without VIGVs in the presence of an inlet flow distortion is assessed. Results show that the VIGVs improve the performance and stability margin and do so by reducing the amount of swirl at inlet to the rotor component of the fan.

We examine the effects of varying the tunnel width to height ratio on the shock boundary layer interac-tion of an incident oblique shock with a turbulent boundary layer. The computational domain is a simpli-fied representation of typical wind tunnel experiments; the top wall of the tunnel is not modeled; only the flow conditions imposed by the shock are modeled on the top of the computational domain. A hy-pothesis of the expected effect of width to height ratio is presented and tested computationally. All flows are found to be three dimensional for the single shock strength range of width to height ratios considered. The effect of tunnel width is a function of the boundary layer thickness which decreases the effective width.
