A widely tunable fiber ring laser, utilising a SWNT/polycarbonate film mode-locker and a 3-nm tunable filter, has been realized. 2.3ps pulse generation over 27nm spectral range is achieved for a constant pump power of 25mW. © 2007 Optical Society of America.

Quantum-dot active material systems are proving to be an excellent choice for mode-locked laser applications. High-power, high repetition-rate picosecond and sub-picosecond pulse generation is now readily achievable with promising results for ultra-low jitter performance. © 2006 Optical Society of America.

The use of tapered waveguide lasers and amplifiers for enhanced picosecond pulse generation has led to order-of-magnitude peak power and pulse energy improvements. Monolithic pulse generation schemes have so far relied on a double-tapered bow-tie structure. The modeling of tapered lasers has so far been limited to steady-state operation or has lacked experimental comparison. This paper considers both experimentally and theoretically the gain-switched performance of bow-tie lasers of various taper angles. The role of transverse-mode spatial hole burning in tapered waveguide lasers is thereby investigated.

Ultrafast passively mode-locked lasers with spectral tuning capability and high output power have widespread applications in biomedical research, spectroscopy and telecommunications [1,2]. Currently, the dominant technology is based on semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) [2,3]. However, these typically have a narrow tuning range, and require complex fabrication and packaging [2,3]. A simple, cost-effective alternative is to use Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWNTs) [4,10] and Graphene [10,14]. Wide-band operation is possible using SWNTs with a wide diameter distribution [5,10]. However, SWNTs not in resonance are not used and may contribute to unwanted insertion losses [10]. The linear dispersion of the Dirac electrons in graphene offers an ideal solution for wideband ultrafast pulse generation [10,15]. © 2011 IEEE.

Cheap to make and easy to shape, Magnesium Diboride (MgB2) throws the field of applied superconductivity wide open. Great efforts have been made to develop a super-conducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using MgB 2. With a superconducting transition temperature of 39 K, MgB 2 can be conveniently cooled with commercial cryocoolers. A cryogenic desktop test system, an ac pulse generation system and a real time data acquisition program in LabView/DAQmx were developed to investigate the quench behavior of MgB2 wires under pulse overcurrents at 25 K in self-field conditions. The experimental results on the current limitation behavior show the possibilities for using MgB2 for future SFCL applications. © 2007 IEEE.
