Solidly mounted resonators (SMRs) with a top carbon nanotubes (CNTs) surface coating that doubles as an electrode and as a sensing layer have been fabricated. The influence of the CNTs on the frequency response of the resonators was studied by direct comparison to identical devices with a top metallic electrode. It was found that the CNTs introduced significantly less mass load on the resonators and these devices exhibited a greater quality factor, Q (>2000, compared to ∼1000 for devices with metal electrodes), which increases the gravimetric sensitivity of the devices by allowing the tracking of smaller frequency shifts. Protein solutions with different concentrations were loaded on the top of the resonators and their responses to mass-load from physically adsorbed coatings were investigated. Results show that resonators using CNTs as the top electrode exhibited a higher frequency change for a given load (∼0.25 MHz cm2 ng-1) compared to that of a metal thin film electrode (∼0.14 MHz cm2 ng-1), due to the lower mass of the CNT electrodes and their higher active surface area compared to that of a thin film metal electrode. It is therefore concluded that the use of CNT electrodes on resonators for their use as gravimetric biosensors is a significant improvement over metallic electrodes that are normally employed. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) devices with carbon nanotube (CNT) electrodes directly grown on a ZnO film by thermal chemical vapor deposition have been fabricated. CNT electrodes possess a very low density and high acoustic impedance, which reduces the intrinsic mass loading effect resulting from the electrodes' weight and better confines the longitudinal acoustic standing waves inside the resonator, in turn providing a resonator with a higher quality factor. The influence of the CNTs on the frequency response of the FBAR devices was studied by comparing two identical sets of devices; one set comprised FBARs fabricated with chromium/ gold bilayer electrodes, and the second set comprised FBARs fabricated with CNT electrodes. It was found that the CNTs had a significant effect on attenuating traveling waves at the surface of the FBARs' membranes because of their high elastic stiffness. Three-dimensional finite element analysis of the devices fabricated was carried out, and the numerical simulations were consistent with the experimental results obtained. © 2011 IEEE.

Carbon fibre-epoxy composite square honeycombs, and the parent composite material, were tested in quasi-static compression at a strain rate of 10 -3 s -1 and in dynamic compression at strain rates of 10 3-10 4 s -1 using an instrumented Kolsky bar arrangement. Taken together, these tests provide an assessment of the potential of this composite topology for use as a lightweight sandwich core. The honeycombs had two relative densities, 0.12 and 0.24, and two material orientations, ±45° and 0/90° with respect to the prismatic, loading direction of the honeycomb. Honeycomb manufacture was by slotting, assembling and bonding together carbon fibre/epoxy woven plies of composite sheets of 2 × 2 twill weave construction. The peak value of wall stress in the honeycombs was about one third that of the parent material, for all strain rates. An elastic finite element analysis was used to trace the source of this knock-down in strength: a stress concentration exists at the root of the slots and leads to premature failure by microbuckling. Shock-wave effects were evident at impact velocities exceeding 50 ms -1 for the honeycomb of relative density 0.12. This was traced to stubbing of the buckled cell walls against the face of the Kolsky bar. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Thin film bulk acoustic wave resonator (FBAR) devices supporting simultaneously multiple resonance modes have been designed for gravimetric sensing. The mechanism for dual-mode generation within a single device has been discussed, and theoretical calculations based on finite element analysis allowed the fabrication of FBARs whose resonance modes have opposite reactions to temperature changes; one of the modes exhibiting a positive frequency shift for a rise of temperature whilst the other mode exhibits a negative shift. Both modes exhibit negative frequency shift for a mass load and hence by monitoring simultaneously both modes it is possible to distinguish whether a change in the resonance frequency is due to a mass load or temperature variation (or a combination of both), avoiding false positive/negative responses in gravimetric sensing without the need of additional reference devices or complex electronics.

The dynamic response of end-clamped monolithic beams and sandwich beams of equal areal mass have been measured by loading the beams at mid-span with metal foam projectiles to simulate localised blast loading. The sandwich beams were made from carbon fibre laminate and comprised identical face sheets and a square-honeycomb core. The transient deflection of the beams was determined as a function of projectile momentum, and the measured response was compared with finite element simulations based upon a damage mechanics approach. A range of failure modes were observed in the sandwich beams including core fracture, plug-type shear failure of the core, debonding of the face sheets from the core and tensile tearing of the face sheets at the supports. In contrast, the monolithic beams failed by a combination of delamination of the plies and tensile failure at the supports. The finite element simulations of the beam response were accurate provided the carbon fibre properties were endowed with rate sensitivity of damage growth. The relative performance of monolithic and sandwich beams were quantified by the maximum transverse deflection at mid-span for a given projectile momentum. It was found that the sandwich beams outperformed both monolithic composite beams and steel sandwich beams with a square-honeycomb core. However, the composite beams failed catastrophically at a lower projectile impulse than the steel beams due to the lower ductility of the composite material. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. This paper investigates the effect of mode-localization that arises from structural asymmetry induced by manufacturing tolerances in mechanically coupled, electrically transduced Si MEMS resonators. We demonstrate that in the case of such mechanically coupled resonators, the achievable series motional resistance (R x) is dependent not only on the quality factor (Q) but also on the variations in the eigenvector of the chosen mode of vibration induced by mode localization due to manufacturing tolerances during the fabrication process. We study this effect of mode-localization both theoretically and experimentally in two pairs of coupled double-ended tuning fork resonators with different levels of initial structural asymmetry. The measured series R x is minimal when the system is close to perfect symmetry and any deviation from structural symmetry induced by fabrication tolerances leads to a degradation in the effective R x. Mechanical tuning experiments of the stiffness of one of the coupled resonators was also conducted to study variations in R x as a function of structural asymmetry within the system, the results of which demonstrated consistent variations in motional resistance with predictions. © 2012 IEEE.

The modelling of the non-linear behaviour of MEMS oscillators is of interest to understand the effects of non-linearities on start-up, limit cycle behaviour and performance metrics such as output frequency and phase noise. This paper proposes an approach to integrate the non-linear modelling of the resonator, transducer and sustaining amplifier in a single numerical modelling environment so that their combined effects may be investigated simultaneously. The paper validates the proposed electrical model of the resonator through open-loop frequency response measurements on an electrically addressed flexural silicon MEMS resonator driven to large motional amplitudes. A square wave oscillator is constructed by embedding the same resonator as the primary frequency determining element. Measurements of output power and output frequency of the square wave oscillator as a function of resonator bias and driving voltage are consistent with model predictions ensuring that the model captures the essential non-linear behaviour of the resonator and the sustaining amplifier in a single mathematical equation. © 2012 IEEE.
