Two tutorial examples are presented which illustrate different methods of designing practical multivariable control systems using frequency-domain techniques. In the first case eigenvector alignment techniques are used to manipulate and shape the generalized Nyquist diagrams, while in the second case LQG theory in conjunction with singular value plots is employed. In both cases the designs are carried out on a modern computer-aided control-system design package.

The European Control Conferences (ECC) are held every two years, under the auspices of the European Union Control Association (EUCA). The conference is held at the Faculty of Law on the campus of Cambridge University with the exception of the opening planery talks, which is held at the Corn Exchange in the City Center. The scientific program for the ECC03 included 606 regular papers, three plenary talks, six semiplenary talks, three minicourses, and two roundtable sessions.

Modern high performance motorcycles often employ a steering damper producing a moment that opposes the angular velocity of the steering assembly relative to the main frame. When modeling the motorcycle in a conventional manner, the steering damper is included as an integral part of the machine. The reduction in the wobble-mode frequency is caused by the effective increase in the steering system's moment of inertia. The compensators show the potential to significantly improve the damping of both wobble and weave modes simultaneously. The dynamic characteristics of high-performance motorcycles can be improved by replacing the conventional steering damper with a passive mechanical steering compensator. The design methodology adopted uses Nyquist frequency response ideas, root-locus analysis and loop-shaping design to obtain a preliminary choice of parameters.

Nowadays, control systems are involved in nearly all aspects of our lives. They are all around us, but their presence is not always really apparent. They are in our kitchens, in our DVD-players, computers and our cars. They are found in elevators, ships, aircraft and spacecraft. Control systems are present in every industry, they are used to control chemical reactors, distillation columns, and nuclear power plants. Computer modelling approaches have significant potential to enable decision-making about various aspects of responsive manufacturing. In order to understand the system prior to the selection of any responsiveness strategy, multiple process segments of organisations need to be modelled. The article presents a novel systematic approach for creating coherent sets of unified enterprise, simulation and other supporting models that collectively facilitate responsiveness. In this approach, enterprise models are used to explicitly define relatively enduring relationships between (i) production planning and control (PPC) processes, that implement a particular strategy and (ii) process-oriented elements of production systems, that are work loaded by the PPC processes. Coherent simulation models, can in part be derived from the enterprise models, so that they computer execute production system behaviours. In this way, time-based performance outcomes can be simulated; so that the impacts of alternative PPC strategies on the planning and controlling historical or forecasted patterns of workflow, through (current and possible future) production system models, can be analysed. The article describes the unified modelling approach conceived and its application in a furniture industry case study small and medium enterprise (SME). This article introduces Periodically Controlled Hybrid Automata (PCHA) for modular specification of embedded control systems. In a PCHA, control actions that change the control input to the plant occur roughly periodically, while other actions that update the state of the controller may occur in the interim. Such actions could model, for example, sensor updates and information received from higher-level planning modules that change the set point of the controller. Based on periodicity and subtangential conditions, a new sufficient condition for verifying invariant properties of PCHAs is presented. For PCHAs with polynomial continuous vector fields, it is possible to check these conditions automatically using, for example, quantifier elimination or sum of squares decomposition. We examine the feasibility of this automatic approach on a small example. The proposed technique is also used to manually verify safety and progress properties of a fairly complex planner-controller subsystem of an autonomous ground vehicle. Geometric properties of planner-generated paths are derived which guarantee that such paths can be safely followed by the controller. © 2012 ACM.

In a PCHA, control actions occur roughly periodically while internal and input actions may occur in the interim changing the discrete-state or the setpoint. Based on periodicity and subtangential conditions, a new sufficient condition for verifying invariance of PCHAs is presented. This technique is used in verifying safety of the planner-controller subsystem of an autonomous ground vehicle, and in deriving geometric properties of planner generated paths that can be followed safely by the controller under environmental uncertainties.

Networked control systems (NCSs) have attracted much attention in the past decade due to their many advantages and growing number of applications. Different than classic control systems, resources in NCSs, such as network bandwidth and communication energy, are often limited, which degrade the closed-loop system performance and may even cause the system to become unstable. Seeking a desired trade-off between the closed-loop system performance and the limited resources is thus one heated area of research. In this paper, we analyze the trade-off between the sensor-to-controller communication rate and the closed-loop system performance indexed by the conventional LQG control cost. We present and compare several sensor data schedules, and demonstrate that two event-based sensor data schedules provide better trade-off than an optimal offline schedule. Simulation examples are provided to illustrate the theories developed in the paper. © 2012 AACC American Automatic Control Council).

This paper addresses the speed and flux regulation of induction motors under the assumption that the motor parameters are poorly known. An adaptive passivity-based control is proposed that guarantees robust regulation as well as accurate estimation of the electrical parameters that govern the motor performance. This paper provides a local stability analysis of the adaptive scheme, which is illustrated by simulations and supported by a successful experimental validation on an industrial product. © 2009 IEEE.

This paper presents an analysis of the slow-peaking phenomenon, a pitfall of low-gain designs that imposes basic limitations to large regions of attraction in nonlinear control systems. The phenomenon is best understood on a chain of integrators perturbed by a vector field up(x, u) that satisfies p(x, 0) = 0. Because small controls (or low-gain designs) are sufficient to stabilize the unperturbed chain of integrators, it may seem that smaller controls, which attenuate the perturbation up(x, u) in a large compact set, can be employed to achieve larger regions of attraction. This intuition is false, however, and peaking may cause a loss of global controllability unless severe growth restrictions are imposed on p(x, u). These growth restrictions are expressed as a higher order condition with respect to a particular weighted dilation related to the peaking exponents of the nominal system. When this higher order condition is satisfied, an explicit control law is derived that achieves global asymptotic stability of x = 0. This stabilization result is extended to more general cascade nonlinear systems in which the perturbation p(x, v) v, v = (ξ, u) T, contains the state ξ and the control u of a stabilizable subsystem ξ = a(ξ, u). As an illustration, a control law is derived that achieves global stabilization of the frictionless ball-and-beam model.

Alternative and more efficient computational methods can extend the applicability of model predictive control (MPC) to systems with tight real-time requirements. This paper presents a system-on-a-chip MPC system, implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), consisting of a sparse structure-exploiting primal dual interior point (PDIP) quadratic program (QP) solver for MPC reference tracking and a fast gradient QP solver for steady-state target calculation. A parallel reduced precision iterative solver is used to accelerate the solution of the set of linear equations forming the computational bottleneck of the PDIP algorithm. A numerical study of the effect of reducing the number of iterations highlights the effectiveness of the approach. The system is demonstrated with an FPGA-in-the-loop testbench controlling a nonlinear simulation of a large airliner. This paper considers many more manipulated inputs than any previous FPGA-based MPC implementation to date, yet the implementation comfortably fits into a midrange FPGA, and the controller compares well in terms of solution quality and latency to state-of-the-art QP solvers running on a standard PC. © 1993-2012 IEEE.
