Supply network integration in multi-organisational network systems

This paper explores supply network integration in complex product service systems involving close collaboration between primes. Four case study networks are studied (aerospace, naval, power and telecoms), each involving equipment manufacture and service provision. Factors that support network integration, identified from the literature and refined in the in-depth pilot case, were used to explore which processes support integration of the extended enterprise. Results suggests that a select set of processes support integration of the extended enterprise and that the absence of a shared view on these critical enabling processes results from contextual complexity of the network rather than from competing commercial interests. Tailored sustainability assessment for urban masterplanning

Tailored sustainability assessment represents one approach to addressing sustainability issues on large-scale urban projects with varying geographical, social and political constraints and diverse incentives among stakeholders. This paper examines the value and limitations of this approach. Three case studies of tailored systems developed by the authors for three unique masterplanning projects are discussed in terms of: contextual sustainability drivers; nature and evolution of systems developed; outcomes of implementation; and overall value delivered. Analysis Leads to conclusions on the key features of effective tailored assessment, the value of tailored sustainability assessment from various perspectives (including client, designer, end-users and the environment), and the limitations of tailored assessment as a tool for comparative analysis between projects. Although systems considered here are specific to individual projects and developed commercially, the challenges and lessons learned are relevant to a range of sustainability assessment approaches developed under different conditions.

Solution oriented partnerships - A new business model for integrating global-production efficiencies with sustainability

A business model for integrating global-production efficiencies with sustainability is discussed. Two trends that emulate some of the aspects of the wealthy are the increasing willingness of many to pay extra for customization such as clothes, of kitchens and the increasing acceptance of purchasing a service as a product substitute. Two final trends that are also based in the attitudes of people is an increased awareness of the value of local culture and an increased concern with issues of sustainability. The results show that the goal congruence between for-profit and not-for-profit organizations puts emphasis on value and belief of the organization.

The challenges associated with energy security, climate change and sustainable consumption will be overcome or lost in existing buildings.
