Detailed numerical investigations are undertaken of wavelength reused bidirectional transmission of adaptively modulated optical OFDM (AMOOFDM) signals over a single SMF in a WDM-PON incorporating a SOA intensity modulator and a RSOA intensity modulator in the OLT and ONU, respectively. A comprehensive theoretical model describing the performance of such network scenarios is, for the first time, developed, taking into account dynamic optical characteristics of SOA and RSOA intensity modulators as well as the effects of Rayleigh backscattering (RB) and residual downstream signal-induced crosstalk. The developed model is rigorously verified experimentally in RSOA-based real-time end-to-end OOFDM systems at 7.5Gb/s. It is shown that the RB noise and crosstalk effects are the dominant factors limiting the maximum achievable downstream and upstream transmission performance. Under optimum SOA and RSOA operating conditions as well as practical downstream and upstream optical launch powers, 10Gb/s downstream and 6Gb/s upstream over 40km SMF transmissions of conventional double sideband AMOOFDM signals are feasible without utilizing inline optical amplification and chromatic dispersion compensation. In particular, the transmission performance can be improved to 23Gb/s downstream and 8Gb/s upstream over 40 km SMFs when single sideband subcarrier modulation is adopted in the downstream systems. Three novel designs of adaptively modulated optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing modems using subcarrier modulation (AMOOFDM-SCM) are proposed, for the first time, each of which requires a single IFFT/FFT operation. These designs has a number of salient advantages including a significantly simplified modem configuration due to the involvement of a single IFFT/FFT operation, input/output reconfigurability, dynamic bandwidth allocation capability, cost reduction and system flexibility and performance robustness to variations in transmission link conditions. Investigations show that these three modems are capable of supporting >60Gb/s AMOOFDM-SCM signal transmission over 20km, 40km and 60km single-mode fibre-based intensity modulation and direct detection transmission links without optical amplification and chromatic dispersion compensation. The transmission performance of multi-channel adaptively modulated optical OFDM (AMOOFDM) signals is numerically investigated, for the first time, in optical amplification- and chromatic dispersion compensation-free, intensity-modulation and direct-detection systems incorporating directly modulated DFB lasers (DMLs). It is shown that adaptive modulation not only reduces significantly the nonlinear WDM impairments induced by the effects of cross-phase modulation and four-wave mixing, but also compensates effectively for the DML-induced frequency chirp effect. In comparison with identical modulation, adaptive modulation improves the maximum achievable signal transmission capacity of a central channel by a factor of 1.3 and 3.6 for 40km and 80km SMFs, respectively, with corresponding dynamic input optical power ranges being extended by approximately 5dB. In addition, adaptive modulation also enables cross-channel complementary modulation format mapping, leading to an improved transmission capacity of the entire WDM system. The 7.5-Gb/s real-time end-to-end optical orthogonal frequency-division- multiplexing (OOFDM) transceivers incorporating variable power loading on each individual subcarrier are demonstrated experimentally using a live-optimized reflective semiconductor optical amplifier intensity modulator having a modulation bandwidth as narrow as 1 GHz. Real-time OOFDM signal transmission at 7.5 Gb/s over 25-km standard single-mode fiber is achieved across the $C$-band in simple intensity modulation and direct detection systems without in-line optical amplification and dispersion compensation. © 2006 IEEE.

Dicke superradiance from a two-section violet GaN/InGaN semiconductor laser diode is demonstrated for the first time. In the superradiance regime, optical pulses with peak powers in excess of 2.8 W and durations as short as 1.4 ps are generated at repetition rates of up to 10 MHz at the emission wavelength of 408 nm. The properties of superradiant pulse generation from these GaN/InGaN laser diodes are very similar to those reported for infrared AlGaAs/GaAs laser diodes.

The propagation of ultrashort pulses in a traveling wave semiconductor amplifier is considered. It is demonstrated that the effective polarization relaxation time, which determines the coherence of the interaction of pulses within the medium, strongly depends on its optical gain. As a result, it is shown that at large optical gains the coherence time can exceed the transverse relaxation time T2 by an order of magnitude, this accounting for the strong femtosecond superradiant pulse generation commonly observed in semiconductor laser structures. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Atmospheric effects can significantly degrade the reliability of free-space optical communications. One such effect is scintillation, caused by atmospheric turbulence, refers to random fluctuations in the irradiance and phase of the received laser beam. In this paper we inv stigate the use of multiple lasers and multiple apertures to mitigate scintillation. Since the scintillation process is slow, we adopt a block fading channel model and study the outage probability under the assumptions of orthogonal pulse-position modulation and non-ideal photodetection. Assuming perfect receiver channel state information (CSI), we derive the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) exponents for the cases when the scintillation is lognormal, exponential and gammagamma distributed, which cover a wide range of atmospheric turbulence conditions. Furthermore, when CSI is also available at the transmitter, we illustrate very large gains in SNR are possible (in some cases larger than 15 dB) by adapting the transmitted power. Under a long-term power constraint, we outline fundamental design criteria via a simple expression that relates the required number of lasers and apertures for a given code rate and number of codeword blocks to completely remove system outages. The dramatic increase in hole quality on single crystalline silicon with an 1 μm fiber laser has been reported recently, it redefines the processing options for Si at that wavelength. This study investigated the effects of the MOPA based pulse tuning on the changes of the machined depth and the mass removal mechanism for the generation of microvia holes. Hole depths were measured and surface morphology studied using SEM and optical interferometric profilometry. The pulse peak power was found to strongly influence the material removal mechanism with fixed pulse duration. High peak powers (>1 kW) gave vaporization dominated ablation, left a limited re solidified molten layer and clean hole formation. The pulse duration was found to strongly influence the machined depth. Longer pulse durations generated deeper holes with constant peak power (>1 kW). In comparison with the DPSS UV laser, the IR fiber laser of longer pulse durations machined deeper holes and generated less resolidifed melt beyond the hole rim at high fluencies. The comparison suggests that some applications (microvia drilling) of the DPSS UV laser can be replaced with the more flexible, low cost IR fiber laser. © KSPE and Springer 2012.

Theoretical investigations have been carried out to analyze and compare the link power budget and power dissipation of non-return-to-zero (NRZ), pulse amplitude modulation-4 (PAM-4), carrierless amplitude and phase modulation-16 (CAP-16) and 16-quadrature amplitude modulation-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (16-QAM-OFDM) systems for data center interconnect scenarios. It is shown that for multimode fiber (MMF) links, NRZ modulation schemes with electronic equalization offer the best link power budget margins with the least power dissipation for short transmission distances up to 200 m; while OOFDM is the only scheme which can support a distance of 300 m albeit with power dissipation as high as 4 times that of NRZ. For short single mode fiber (SMF) links, all the modulation schemes offer similar link power budget margins for fiber lengths up to 15 km, but NRZ and PAM-4 are preferable due to their system simplicity and low power consumption. For lengths of up to 30 km, CAP-16 and OOFDM are required although the schemes consume 2 and 4 times as much power respectively compared to that of NRZ. OOFDM alone allows link operation up to 35 km distances. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

The generation of ultrashort optical pulses by semiconductor lasers has been extensively studied for many years. A number of methods, including gain-/Q-switching and different types of mode locking, have been exploited for the generation of picosecond and sub-picosecond pulses [1]. However, the shortest pulses produced by diode lasers are still much longer and weaker than those that are generated by advanced mode-locked solid-state laser systems [2]. On the other hand, an interesting class of devices based on superradiant emission from multiple contact diode laser structures has also been recently reported [3]. Superradiance (SR) is a transient quantum optics phenomenon based on the cooperative radiative recombination of a large number of oscillators, including atoms, molecules, e-h pairs, etc. SR in semiconductors can be used for the study of fundamental properties of e-h ensembles such as photon-mediated pairing, non-equilibrium e-h condensation, BSC-like coherent states and related phenomena. Due to the intrinsic parameters of semiconductor media, SR emission typically results in the generation of a high-power optical pulse or pulse train, where the pulse duration can be much less than 1 ps, under optimised bias conditions. Advantages of this technique over mode locking in semiconductor laser structures include potentially shorter pulsewidths and much larger peak powers. Moreover, the pulse repetition rate of mode-locked pulses is fixed by the cavity round trip time, whereas the repetition rate of SR pulses is controlled by the current bias and can be varied over a wide range. © 2012 IEEE.

We fabricate a saturable absorber mirror by coating a graphenefilm on an output coupler mirror. This is then used to obtain Q-switched mode-locking from a diode-pumped linear cavity channel waveguide laser inscribed in Ytterbium-doped Bismuthate Glass. The laser produces 1.06 ps pulses at ∼1039 nm, with a 1.5 GHz repetition rate, 48% slope efficiency and 202 mW average output power. This performance is due to the combination of the graphene saturable absorber and the high quality optical waveguides in the laser glass. © 2013 Optical Society of America.

An analysis is made of the conditions for the generation of superfluorescence pulses in an inverted medium of electron-hole pairs in a semiconductor. It is shown that strong optical amplification in laser semiconductor amplifiers characterised by αL ≫ 1 leads to suppression of phase re-laxation of the medium during the initial stages of evolution of superfluorescence and to formation of a macroscopic dipole from electron-hole pairs. Cooperative emission of radiation in this system results in generation of a powerful ultrashort pulse of the optical gain, which interacts coherently with the semiconductor medium. It is shown that coherent pulsations of the optical field, observed earlier by the author in Q-switched semiconductor lasers, are the result of superfluorescence and of the coherent interaction between the optical field and the medium.

The mechanical amplification effect of parametric resonance has the potential to outperform direct resonance by over an order of magnitude in terms of power output. However, the excitation must first overcome the damping-dependent initiation threshold amplitude prior to accessing this more profitable region. In addition to activating the principal (1st order) parametric resonance at twice the natural frequency ω0, higher orders of parametric resonance may be accessed when the excitation frequency is in the vicinity of 2ω0/n for integer n. Together with the passive design approaches previously developed to reduce the initiation threshold to access the principal parametric resonance, vacuum packaging (< 10 torr) is employed to further reduce the threshold and unveil the higher orders. A vacuum packaged MEMS electrostatic harvester (0.278 mm3) exhibited 4 and 5 parametric resonance peaks at room pressure and vacuum respectively when scanned up to 10 g. At 5.1 ms-2, a peak power output of 20.8 nW and 166 nW is recorded for direct and principal parametric resonance respectively at atmospheric pressure; while a peak power output of 60.9 nW and 324 nW is observed for the respective resonant peaks in vacuum. Additionally, unlike direct resonance, the operational frequency bandwidth of parametric resonance broadens with lower damping. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
