A modular image capture system with close integration to CCD cameras has been developed. The aim is to produce a system capable of integrating CCD sensor, image capture and image processing into a single compact unit. This close integration provides a direct mapping between CCD pixels and digital image pixels. The system has been interfaced to a digital signal processor board for the development and control of image processing tasks. These have included characterization and enhancement of noisy images from an intensified camera and measurement to subpixel resolutions. A highly compact form of the image capture system is in an advanced stage of development. This consists of a single FPGA device and a single VRAM providing a two chip image capturing system capable of being integrated into a CCD camera. A miniature compact PC has been developed using a novel modular interconnection technique, providing a processing unit in a three dimensional format highly suited to integration into a CCD camera unit. Work is under way to interface the compact capture system to the PC using this interconnection technique, combining CCD sensor, image capture and image processing into a single compact unit. ©2005 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

In a Text-to-Speech system based on time-domain techniques that employ pitch-synchronous manipulation of the speech waveforms, one of the most important issues that affect the output quality is the way the analysis points of the speech signal are estimated and the actual points, i.e. the analysis pitchmarks. In this paper we present our methodology for calculating the pitchmarks of a speech waveform, a pitchmark detection algorithm, which after thorough experimentation and in comparison with other algorithms, proves to behave better with our TD-PSOLA-based Text-to-Speech synthesizer (Time- Domain Pitch-Synchronous Overlap Add Text to Speech System).

The Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique is an image processing tool to obtain instantaneous velocity measurements during an experiment. The basic principle of PIV analysis is to divide the image into small patches and calculate the locations of the individual patches in consecutive images with the help of cross correlation functions. This paper focuses on the application of the PIV analysis in dynamic centrifuge tests on small scale tunnels in loose, dry sand. Digital images were captured during the application of the earthquake loading on tunnel models using a fast digital camera capable of taking digital images at 1000 frames per second at 1 Megapixel resolution. This paper discusses the effectiveness of the existing methods used to conduct PIV analyses on dynamic centrifuge tests. Results indicate that PIV analysis in dynamic testing requires special measures in order to obtain reasonable deformation data. Nevertheless, it was possible to obtain interesting mechanisms regarding the behaviour of the tunnels from PIV analyses. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Manually inspecting concrete surface defects (e.g., cracks and air pockets) is not always reliable. Also, it is labor-intensive. In order to overcome these limitations, automated inspection using image processing techniques was proposed. However, the current work can only detect defects in an image without the ability of evaluating them. This paper presents a novel approach for automatically assessing the impact of two common surface defects (i.e., air pockets and discoloration). These two defects are first located using the developed detection methods. Their attributes, such as the number of air pockets and the area of discoloration regions, are then retrieved to calculate defects’ visual impact ratios (VIRs). The appropriate threshold values for these VIRs are selected through a manual rating survey. This way, for a given concrete surface image, its quality in terms of air pockets and discoloration can be automatically measured by judging whether their VIRs are below the threshold values or not. The method presented in this paper was implemented in C++ and a database of concrete surface images was tested to validate its performance. The capability to automatically identify shapes, objects and materials from the image content through direct and indirect methodologies has enabled the development of several civil engineering related applications that assist in the design, construction and maintenance of construction projects. This capability is a product of the technological breakthroughs in the area of Image Processing that has allowed for the development of a large number of digital imaging applications in all industries. In this paper, an automated and content based shape recognition model is presented. This model was devised to enhance the recognition capabilities of our existing material based image retrieval model. The shape recognition model is based on clustering techniques, and specifically those related with material and object segmentation. The model detects the borders of each previously detected material depicted in the image, examines its linearity (length/width ratio) and detects its orientation (horizontal/vertical). The results emonstrate the suitability of this model for construction site image retrieval purposes and reveal the capability of existing clustering technologies to accurately identify the shape of a wealth of materials from construction site images.

Real-time cardiac ultrasound allows monitoring the heart motion during intracardiac beating heart procedures. Our application assists atrial septal defect (ASD) closure techniques using real-time 3D ultrasound guidance. One major image processing challenge is the processing of information at high frame rate. We present an optimized block flow technique, which combines the probability-based velocity computation for an entire block with template matching. We propose adapted similarity constraints both from frame to frame, to conserve energy, and globally, to minimize errors. We show tracking results on eight in-vivo 4D datasets acquired from porcine beating-heart procedures. Computing velocity at the block level with an optimized scheme, our technique tracks ASD motion at 41 frames/s. We analyze the errors of motion estimation and retrieve the cardiac cycle in ungated images. © 2007 IEEE.
