Ferrocene-terminated self-assembled monolayers (Fc-SAMs) are one of the most studied molecular aggregates on metal electrodes. They are easy to fabricate and provide a stable and reproducible system to investigate the effect of the microenvironment on the electron transfer parameters. We propose a novel application for Fc-SAMs, the detection of molecular interactions, based on the modification of the SAM with target-specific receptors. Mixed SAMs were fabricated by coimmobilization on Au electrodes of thiolated alkane chains with three different head groups: hydroxy terminating head group, ferrocene head group, and a functional head group such as biotin. Upon binding, the intrinsic electric charge of the target (e.g., streptavidin) modifies the electrostatic potential at the plane of electron transfer, causing a shift in the formal potential E degrees '. The SAMs were characterized by AC voltammetry. The detection mechanism is confirmed by measurements of formal potential as a function of electrolyte pH.

Electrochemical investigations were conducted of the effect of potential on the luminescence of porous silico (PS). The use of liquid contacts allows the potential to be controlled during studies of the photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EI). The PL and EL of PS samples prepared from n-type substrates is considered. To obtain luminescence from such PS it is necessary to generate holes in the valence band. This is achieved by either photoexcitation or an electrochemical process involving the reduction of persulfate. This paper describes the investigations of the effect of potential on the PL and EL of PS. A mechanism of 'potential tuning' based on electron occupancy and Auger quenching is then proposed.

Previously published expressions for the wear volume in the micro-scale abrasion test for curved specimen surfaces (K.L. Rutherford and I.M. Hutchings, Tribology Letters 2 (1996) 1-11) were based upon erroneous assumptions about the wear-scar geometry. Accurate volumes have now been computed, and the errors in the use of the original analytical equations are shown to be negligibly small (<0.5% error) for all practical cases. © J.C. The effect of weathering on the wear resistance of automotive clearcoats has been evaluated. Acrylic-based and urethane-based coatings were exposed in Florida, Belgium and Australia and also under accelerated conditions to SAE J1960 with 0.55 W m -2 borosilicate/borosilicate filtered xenon arc light. Weathering caused a significant reduction in the abrasion and erosion resistance of the clearcoats and large increases in their hardness. Accelerated weathering produced different effects from natural exposure.

An alternative method for seeding catalyst nanoparticles for carbon nanotubes and nanowires growth is presented. Ni nanoparticles are formed inside a 450 nm SiO2 film on (100) Si wafers through the implantation of Ni ions at fluences of 7.5×1015 and 1.7×1016 ions.cm-2 and post-annealing treatments at 700, 900 and 1100°C. After exposed to the surface by HF dip etching, the Ni nanoparticles are used as catalyst for the growth of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes by direct current plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. © 2007 Materials Research Society.

The laser is a major source of nonlinearity for optical fibre communication systems. In this paper, we propose a CMOS analogue predistortion circuit to reduce laser nonlinearity for wideband optical fibre links. The circuit uses a nonlinearity having the inverse transfer characteristic of the directly modulated vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). It is shown by post-layout simulation that the predistortion circuit shows 12dBm improvement in the optical fibre system. The optical fibre transmitter front-end with predistortion lineariser is being fabricated using the austriamicrosystems (AMS) 0.3 5μm CMOS technology.
