Theoretical predictions of the diameters of continuous ink-jets downstream of long nozzles are generalized to include the important cases of ink-jet fluids and shorter nozzles where the velocity profile at the nozzle exit is undeveloped (non-parabolic). Comparisons of the new predictions with experiments and simulations are made for fairly long nozzles with tapered profiles and short nozzles with conical profiles; experimental and simulated profiles are also compared downstream of the nozzle exit for both industrial and large scale ink-jet print heads. Precise measurements of the un-modulated jet diameters downstream of the nozzle exit can set really useful limits to the possible shapes of the flow profile right at the nozzle exit, and in particular allow some assessment of the axial velocity gradients and fluid shear rates at the nozzle exit where direct speed measurement is usually impractical. Simulations allow further study of the relaxation of the velocity profile downstream of the nozzle exit, and are reported for both un-modulated and modulated CIJ jetting. Implications of this work include speeding up CIJ simulations, absolute calibration of the applied CIJ system modulation, and the likely magnitude of dynamic surface tension effects on observed CIJ satellite speeds.

A novel method for on-line topographic analysis of rough surfaces in the SEM has been investigated. It utilises a digital minicomputer configured to act as a programmable scan generator and automatic focusing unit. The computer is coupled to the microscope through digital-to-analogue converters which enable it to generate ramp waveforms allowing the beam to be scanned over a small sub-region of the field under program control. A further digital-to-analogue converter regulates the current supply to the objective lens of the microscope. The video signal is sampled by means of an analogue-to-digital converter and the resultant binary code stored in the computer's memory as an array of numbers describing relative image intensity. Computations based on the intensity gradient of the image allow the objective lens current to be found for the in-focus condition, which may be related to the working distance through a previous calibration experiment. The sensitivity of the method for detecting small height changes is theoretically of the order of 1 μm. In practice the operator specifies features of interest by means of a mobile spot cursor injected into the SEM display screen, or he may scan the specimen at sub-regions corresponding to pre-determined points on a regular grid defined by him. The operation then proceeds under program control. | A novel method for on-line topographic analysis of rough surfaces in the SEM has been investigated. A novel technique for automated topographical analysis in the SEM has been investigated. It utilizes a 16-bit minicomputer arranged to act as an automatic focusing unit. The computer is coupled to the objective lens of the microscope, by means of a digital to analogue converter, and may regulate the excitation of the lens under program control. Further digital-to-analogue converters allow the computer to act as a programmable scan generator by applying ramp waveforms to the scan amplifiers, permitting the beam to be swept over a small sub-region of the field of interest. The video signal is sampled and applied to an analogue-to-digital converter; the resultant binary numbers are stored in computer memory as an array of values representing relative image intensities within a subregion. A differencing algorithm applied to the collected data allows the level of objective lens excitation to be found at which the sharpness of the image is optimized, and the excitation may be related to the working distance for that subregion through a previous calibration experiment. The sensitivity of the method for detecting small height changes is theoretically of the order of 1 μm.

Here we present a novel signal processing technique for a square wave thermally-modulated carbon black/polymer composite chemoresistor. The technique consists of only two mathematical operations: summing the off-transient and on-transient conductance signals; and subtracting the steady-state conductance signal. A single carbon black/polyvinylpyrrolidone composite chemo -resistor was fabricated and used to demonstrate the validity of the technique. Classification of water, methanol and ethanol vapours was successfully performed using only the peak time of the resultant curves. Quantification of the different vapours was also possible using the height of the peaks, because it was linearly proportional to concentration. This technique does not require zero-gas calibration and thus is superior to previously reported methods. ©2009 IEEE.

A multi-dimensional combustion code implementing the Conditional Moment Closure turbulent combustion model interfaced with a well-established RANS two- phase flow field solver has been employed to study a broad range of operating conditions for a heavy duty direct-injection common-rail Diesel engine. These conditions include different loads (25%, 50%, 75% and full load) and engine speeds (1250 and 1830 RPM) and, with respect to the fuel path, different injection timings and rail pressures. A total of nine cases have been simulated. Excellent agreement with experimental data has been found for the pressure traces and the heat release rates, without adjusting any model constants. The chemical mechanism used contains a detailed NOx sub-mechanism. The predicted emissions agree reasonably well with the experimental data considering the range of operating points and given no adjustments of any rate constants have been employed. In an effort to identify CPU cost reduction potential, various dimensionality reduction strategies have been assessed. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the predictions with respect to resolution in particular relating to the CMC grid has been investigated. Overall, the results suggest that the presented modelling strategy has considerable predictive capability concerning Diesel engine combustion without requiring model constant calibration based on experimental data. This is true particularly for the heat release rates predictions and, to a lesser extent, for NOx emissions where further progress is still necessary. © 2009 SAE International.

This work reports on thermal characterization of SOI (silicon on insulator) CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) MEMS (micro electro mechanical system) gas sensors using a thermoreflectance (TR) thermography system. The sensors were fabricated in a CMOS foundry and the micro hot-plate structures were created by back-etching the CMOS processed wafers in a MEMS foundry using DRIE (deep reactive ion etch) process. The calibration and experimental details of the thermoreflectance based thermal imaging setup, used for these micro hot-plate gas sensor structures, are presented. Experimentally determined temperature of a micro hot-plate sensor, using TR thermography and built-in silicon resistive temperature sensor, is compared with that estimated using numerical simulations. The results confirm that TR based thermal imaging technique can be used to determine surface temperature of CMOS MEMS devices with a high accuracy. © 2010 EDA Publishing/THERMINIC.

Housing stock models can be useful tools in helping to assess the environmental and socio-economic impacts of retrofits to residential buildings; however, existing housing stock models are not able to quantify the uncertainties that arise in the modelling process from various sources, thus limiting the role that they can play in helping decision makers. This paper examines the different sources of uncertainty involved in housing stock models and proposes a framework for handling these uncertainties. This framework involves integrating probabilistic sensitivity analysis with a Bayesian calibration process in order to quantify uncertain parameters more accurately. The proposed framework is tested on a case study building, and suggestions are made on how to expand the framework for retrofit analysis at an urban-scale. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

A simple laser refractometer based on the detection of the critical angle for liquids is presented. The calibrated refractometer presents up to 0.000 11 of uncertainty when the refractive index is in the range between 1.300 00 and 1.340 00. The experimental setup is easy to construct and the material needed is available at most optics laboratories. The calibration method is simple and can be used in other devices. The refractive index measurements in aqueous solutions of sodium chloride were carried out to test the device and a linear dependence between the refractive index and the salt concentration was found. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.

This paper presents a simple design and the testing of a blackbody prototype. The physical properties and geometry of the cavity produce a radiator or blackbody with an emissivity greater than 0.99. The prototype has the advantages of having a traditional spherical cavity made of alumina refractory cement and a radiative emission very close to that of an ideal blackbody. The prototype can be used as a calibration standard for other radiation measuring instruments or sensors. Experimental measurements of radiant flux of the prototype measured with a calibrated infrared radiometer and a wide spectrum radiometer are also presented. The prototype is easy to construct and the material required are available to most research centers, laboratories, industries, and universities. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

The movement of the circular piston in an oscillating piston positive displacement flowmeter is important in understanding the operation of the flowmeter, and the leakage of liquid past the piston plays a key role in the performance of the meter. The clearances between the piston and the chamber are small, typically less than 60 νm. In order to measure this film thickness a fluorescent dye was added to the water passing through the meter, which was illuminated with UV light. Visible light images were captured with a digital camera and analysed to give a measure of the film thickness with an uncertainty of less than 7%. It is known that this method lacks precision unless careful calibration is undertaken. Methods to achieve this are discussed in the paper. The grey level values for a range of film thicknesses were calibrated in situ with six dye concentrations to select the most appropriate one for the range of liquid film thickness. Data obtained for the oscillating piston flowmeter demonstrate the value of the fluorescence technique. The method is useful, inexpensive and straightforward and can be extended to other applications where measurement of liquid film thickness is required. © 2011 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Optimisation of cooling systems within gas turbine engines is of great interest to engine manufacturers seeking gains in performance, efficiency and component life. The effectiveness of coolant delivery is governed by complex flows within the stator wells and the interaction of main annulus and cooling air in the vicinity of the rim seals. This paper reports the development of a test facility which allows the interaction of cooling air and main gas paths to be measured at conditions representative of those found in modern gas turbine engines. The test facility features a two stage turbine with an overall pressure ratio of approximately 2.6:1. Hot air is supplied to the main annulus using a Rolls-Royce Dart compressor driven by an aero-derivative engine plant. Cooling air can be delivered to the stator wells at multiple locations and at a range of flow rates which cover bulk ingestion through to bulk egress. The facility has been designed with adaptable geometry to enable rapid changes of cooling air path configuration. The coolant delivery system allows swift and accurate changes to the flow settings such that thermal transients may be performed. Particular attention has been focused on obtaining high accuracy data, using a radio telemetry system, as well as thorough through-calibration practices. Temperature measurements can now be made on both rotating and stationary discs with a long term uncertainty in the region of 0.3 K. A gas concentration measurement system has also been developed to obtain direct measurement of re-ingestion and rim seal exchange flows. High resolution displacement sensors have been installed in order to measure hot running geometry. This paper documents the commissioning of a test facility which is unique in terms of rapid configuration changes, non-dimensional engine matching and the instrumentation density and resolution. Example data for each of the measurement systems is presented. This includes the effect of coolant flow rate on the metal temperatures within the upstream cavity of the turbine stator well, the axial displacement of the rotor assembly during a commissioning test, and the effect of coolant flow rate on mixing in the downstream cavity of the stator well. The uncertainty associated with a rainfall-runoff and non-point source loading (NPS) model can be attributed to both the parameterization and model structure. An interesting implication of the areal nature of NPS models is the direct relationship between model structure (i.e. sub-watershed size) and sample size for the parameterization of spatial data. The approach of this research is to find structural limitations in scale for the use of the conceptual NPS model, then examine the scales at which suitable stochastic depictions of key parameter sets can be generated. The overlapping regions are optimal (and possibly the only suitable regions) for conducting meaningful stochastic analysis with a given NPS model. Previous work has sought to find optimal scales for deterministic analysis (where, in fact, calibration can be adjusted to compensate for sub-optimal scale selection); however, analysis of stochastic suitability and uncertainty associated with both the conceptual model and the parameter set, as presented here, is novel; as is the strategy of delineating a watershed based on the uncertainty distribution. The results of this paper demonstrate a narrow range of acceptable model structure for stochastic analysis in the chosen NPS model. In the case examined, the uncertainties associated with parameterization and parameter sensitivity are shown to be outweighed in significance by those resulting from structural and conceptual decisions. © 2011 Copyright IAHS Press.

Failure of retaining walls is observed after many recent seismic events. Design of these walls are based on the pseudo-static force designs based on the Mononobe-Okabe earth pressure coefficient equations. However, it is clear that there are limitations attached with this approach. This paper investigates the seismic behaviour of sheet pile retaining walls using dynamic centrifuge testing facilities. In addition to using bending moment strain gauges on the wall, new generation earth pressure cells have also been used to investigate the generation of active and passive earth pressures. The results indicate that Mononobe-Okabe equations give relatively good estimates of active earth pressures but may be over-predicting passive earth pressures at certain peak ground acceleration levels. Based on this series of centrifuge tests it is concluded that earth pressure cells are successful in providing good qualitative data, but need to be supplemented by good calibration methods. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
