A dynamic beam propagation model allows design optimization of high power low divergence tapered waveguide lasers. The model is extended to include spatially-resolved temperature profiles and a temperature dependent gain. Using this model, design parameters such as the optimum facet reflectivity, taper angle, and waveguide dimension can be calculated for low far-field divergence and high continuous wave power.

The peel test is commonly used to determine the strength of adhesive joints. In its simplest form, a thin flexible strip which has been bonded to a rigid surface is peeled from the substrate at a constant rate and the peeling force which is applied to the debonding surfaces by the tension in the tape is measured. Peeling can be carried out with the peel angle, i.e. the angle made by the peel force with the substrate surface, from any value above about 10° although peeling tests at 90 and 180° are most common. If the tape is sufficiently thin for its bending resistance to be negligibly small then as well as the debonding or decohesion energy associated with the adhesive in and around the point of separation, the relation between the peeling force and the peeling angle is influenced both by the mechanical properties of the tape and any pre-strain locked into the tape during its application to the substrate. The analytic solution for a tape material which can be idealised as elastic perfectly-plastic is well established. Here, we present a more general form of analysis, applicable in principle to any constitutive relation between tape load and tape extension. Non-linearity between load and extension is of increasing significance as the peel angle is decreased: the model presented is consistent with existing equations describing the failure of a lap joint between non-linear materials. The analysis also allows for energy losses within the adhesive layer which themselves may be influenced by both peel rate and peel angle. We have experimentally examined the application of this new analysis to several specific peeling cases including tapes of cellophane, poly-vinyl chloride and PTFE. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. The use of high tilt angle FLC SLM for optical interconnects was discussed. The transmissive SLM was designed as a 320×1 pixels glass SLM with 20 μm pitch pixels and 2 μm pixel deadspace. The SLM was fabricated using standard class 100 cleanroom facilities to make a glass on glass 1D SLM. The results show that a N×N optical switch can be built using the two-hologram architecture.

Flutter and divergence instabilities have been advocated to be possible in elastic structures with Coulomb friction, but no direct experimental evidence has ever been provided. Moreover, the same types of instability can be induced by tangential follower forces, but these are commonly thought to be of extremely difficult, if not impossible, practical realization. Therefore, a clear experimental basis for flutter and divergence induced by friction or follower-loading is still lacking. This is provided for the first time in the present article, showing how a follower force of tangential type can be realized via Coulomb friction and how this, in full agreement with the theory, can induce a blowing-up vibrational motion of increasing amplitude (flutter) or an exponentially growing motion (divergence). In addition, our results show the limits of a treatment based on the linearized equations, so that nonlinearities yield the initial blowing-up vibration of flutter to reach eventually a steady state. The presented results give full evidence to potential problems in the design of mechanical systems subject to friction, open a new perspective in the realization of follower-loading systems and of innovative structures exhibiting 'unusual' dynamical behaviors. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

A simple laser refractometer based on the detection of the critical angle for liquids is presented. The calibrated refractometer presents up to 0.000 11 of uncertainty when the refractive index is in the range between 1.300 00 and 1.340 00. The experimental setup is easy to construct and the material needed is available at most optics laboratories. The calibration method is simple and can be used in other devices. The refractive index measurements in aqueous solutions of sodium chloride were carried out to test the device and a linear dependence between the refractive index and the salt concentration was found. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.
