This paper describes measurements of the performance of a research stage operating in isolation and as part of a multistage compressor. It is shown that the stall point and the stalled performance of the stage are properties of the system in which it operates rather than a property of the stage itself. The consequences of this for the estimation of the stall point for compressors and compression systems are discussed. The support that the measurements give to assumptions made by mathematical models which use the concept of an 'underlying axisymmetric' characteristic, are highlighted.

The physical sources of sound are expressed in terms of the non-radiating part of the flow. The non-radiating part of the flow can be obtained from convolution filtering, as we demonstrate numerically by using an axi-symmetric jet satisfying the Navier-Stokes equations. Based on the frequency spectrum of the source, we show that the sound sources exhibit more physical behaviour than sound sources based on acoustic analogies. To validate the sources of sound, one needs to let them radiate within the non-radiating flow field. However, our results suggest that the traditional Euler operator linearized about the time-averaged part of the flow should be sufficient to compute the sound field. © 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

DNS of turbulent hydrogen-air premixed flame is conducted for freely propagating and V-flames, using complex chemical kinetics. The results are analysed to study the influence of flame configuration on the turbulence-scalar interaction, which is critical for the scalar gradient generation process. The result suggests that this interaction process is not influenced by the flame configuration and the flame normal is found to predominantly align with the most extensive strain in the region of intense heat release.

Particle concentration is known as a main factor that affects erosion rate of pipe bends in pneumatic conveyors. With consideration of different bend radii, the effect of particle concentration on weight loss of mild steel bends has been investigated in an industrial scale test rig. Experimental results show that there was a significant reduction of the specific erosion rate for high particle concentrations. This reduction was considered to be as a result of the shielding effect during the particle impacts. An empirical model is given. Also a theoretical study of scaling on the shielding effect, and comparisons with some existing models, are presented. It is found that the reduction in specific erosion rate (relative to particle concentration) has a stronger relationship in conveying pipelines than has been found in the erosion tester. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Turbulent combustion of stoichiometric hydrogen-air mixture is simulated using direct numerical simulation methodology, employing complex chemical kinetics. Two flame configurations, freely propagating and V-flames stabilized behind a hot rod, are simulated. The results are analyzed to study the influence of flame configuration on the turbulence-scalar interaction, which is critical for the scalar gradient generation processes. The result suggests that this interaction process is not influenced by the flame configuration and the flame normal is found to align with the most extensive strain in the region of intense heat release. The combustion in the rod stabilized flame is found to be flamelet like in an average sense and the growth of flame-brush thickness with the downstream distance is represented well by Taylor theory of turbulent diffusion, when the flame-brushes are non-interacting. The thickness is observed to saturate when the flame-brushes interact, which is found to occur in the simulated rod stabilized flame with Taylor micro-scale Reynolds number of 97. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.
